DOUGLAS PARK COMMUNITY SCHOOL

**WE ARE A NUT AWARE SCHOOL**

***WE ARE A DOG FREE ZONE NO DOGS ON THE PREMISES AT ALL TIMES***
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Spring is just around the corner. Teachers are sending home report cards for each child today. Your childs
report will highlight what is going well academically, socially and emotionally. It also indicates areas where
further growth is needed and how you can support your child's learning at home. Please make time to come
to the parent-teacher interviews next week. It is important that we continue to work together to support your
child. The staff and I are looking forward to third term.
For me, this third term will be my final one at Douglas Park. I am taking a year off to travel with my husband
as this has been a dream of ours for many years. I enjoyed my three years here as Vice-Principal and I was
thrilled when my request to return to Douglas Park as Principal was granted in 2013. Douglas Park holds a
very special place in my heart, which is why I asked to be assigned here as Principal. I have enjoyed
working with such dedicated staff and I am looking forward to these final four and a half months. My leaving
in July will not negatively impact any of the end-of-year activities, and you can be assured that I will continue
to put my best into everything that I do in these final months.
When I return from my travels in September 2017, I will be assigned to another school. The District
Leadership Team and I both feel that this will ensure the least amount of disruption to Douglas Park, and will
also be in the best interest of the staff and the students.
I have met the new Principal, Carmen Eberle, who will start here in September. She is an experienced
Administrator and is looking forward to being the Principal of Douglas Park. Ms. Eberle is currently the
Principal of Langley Meadows Community School. Prior to working for the Langley School District, she
spent 20+ years as a Classroom Teacher, Resource Teacher and Administrator in Prince George, B.C.
As this school year comes to an end, Ms. Eberle and I will be working together to ensure a smooth
transition. We are already making arrangements for her to attend meetings, meet staff, students and
parents. As well, she will be here working alongside me in July for a few days. Ms. Eberle will work with the
goals which the staff and I are currently establishing for the coming school year.
Being the Principal at Douglas Park for the past three years has been a wonderful experience. It is
rewarding to see the work the staff and I have taken to improve reading. Attitudes and scores are improving
and I am delighted to have played a role in this success. While my year of travel and my new assignment
will provide opportunities for growth, I will miss Douglas Park and Im sure we will create many more happy
memories in the months ahead.

LETTER FROM A VOYAGEUR written by Cheyenne MacKenzie, Div 2

I am a voyageur and a fur trader. I have been away for two months and I am writing a letter back home.
Dear Dad,
It is May 24, 1751. I am canoeing along the MacKenzie River. There are 50 canoes in the water at a time.
There are big rapids in our way so we had to portage. It is harder and heavier than it looks because the
canoe is 450 pounds. It takes 4 to 6 men to carry it. The area is full of black flies so we have to wear a bug
repellant that is made out of skunk oil and bear grease. We paddle 50 minutes an hour. Every hour we take
a 10 minute break. We had to go upstream for fifteen hours and we have to carry heavy loads of pelts. So to
pass time we sing French songs and also to encourage us. We eat lard which is salted pork and we eat
soup with spirits. We sleep for only 4 hours. Then one of my friends got the tent pulled down on him. I also
got the tent pulled down on my head, I laughed so did all my friends because it was so funny. We also
danced to fiddle music. I also played a fun game where a friend and I were trying to pull each other down. It
sure was the funniest game I ever played in my life.
How are you doing at home? How is the family doing? I will be coming back soon enough. Hope you are
doing well!
See you soon,
Love Pierre
