Biology 20 2015/16

Lesson # 1
Date: April 20th, 2016
Chapter 10 Muscles
Topic: Muscle Fibers
Program of Studies Learner Outcomes
Knowledge: 20-D4.1k explain how the motor system supports body functions (i.e.,
digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory and locomotory), referencing smooth,
cardiac and striated muscle
Skills: 20-D4.2s conduct investigations into relationships between and among
observable variables and use a broad range of tools and techniques to gather and
record data and information

design and construct a model of a muscle fibre

Instructional Outcomes: Students will...

Describe and identify smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscle as well as where
they are found and their functions within the body.
Understand and describe the organization of skeletal muscle.
Create a model to promote deeper understanding of the organization of
skeletal muscles.
Supplies & Preparations:
Notes/ Discussion/Teacher
Action
Notes package (class set)
Circulate as students come in,
Chapter 10 Powerpoint
help direct them to the task at
Muscle Fibre worksheet (Class set)
hand.
Spaghetti (3-4 bags)
Clear tape
Elastic bands
Intro: Take 5 (5-10min)
What do you know about muscles? With a
partner write down everything you know in
point form. No detail is too small!
What do you want to know about muscles?
Come up with one question you want
answered
Discuss as a class.
Body: (45min)
o Go through slides 1-17
o Smooth muscle relate to blood vessels,
organs and peristalsis (Prior Knowledge)
o Cardiac Muscle relate to Ch 8, myogenic
o Skeletal Muscle note differences in
structure, necessity of multiple nuclei,
responsibilities
o Types of contractions (have students
demonstrate)
o Isotonic (meaning same tension)

Muscle pairs
quads/hamstrings, bicep/tricep
etc.
Demo- Have 2 students, one
do curls with text book
(isotonic) and the other old the
text book out with extended
arm. Which is harder? Why?

Biology 20 2015/16
muscle changes length
o Isometric (meaning same distance or
not moving) carrying something
o Isokinetic (meaning same speed) contractions produce movements of a
constant speed.
o Muscle Fiber Spaghetti Activity
o Point student attention to worksheet, give
detailed instructions and provide a
demonstration of one bundle.
o All students must participate, emphasize
team work to finish in the time allotted.
o All questions must be completed for
homework.
Conclusion: (2 min)
Bundle all of the muscle fiber bundles
together and present the class muscle
Review each structure from myofibrils to the
whole muscle
Homework:
Students must finish questions on handout, to
go over in class tomorrow.
Assessments:
Class Discussion
Verbal Response to Questioning
Homework
Extras:
Crash Course Muscles: (leads into lesson 2)

If finished early, begin next lesson; actin and
myosin - muscle contraction

Isokinetic swimming the

breast stroke
Circulate, ask students;
What part are you building?
Where does that part fit in?
Can you describe all of the
structures so far?
