First half sets up Roo win

HAWKS V ROOS
BY RICHARD JONES

KANGAROO Flat evened up

its season to a one win-one
loss record following an emphatic 38-point victory over
Eaglehawk on Saturday.
The inaccuracy which
plagued the Roos in round
one was evident at Canterbury Park in the first half,
but in its favour the Roos
defence completely shut
down the Hawks attack in
the opening two terms.
Very few sides which kick
1.2 in the opening two quarters of a match which is all
Eaglehawk managed are
headed for a win.
And with Hunter Lloyd
and Jarryd Wiegard in control of Flats back half, Rhys
Healey (six goals) and Corey
Greer (three) snared the majors which handed the Roos
the four premiership points.
The Hawks did land seven
goals to five in the second
half. But theyd started the
second half 53 points down
and only managed to slash
the ultimate margin to 38
points as the Roos coasted to
victory - 13.17 (95) to 8.9 (57).
The Roos started in similar
fashion to week one. From
10 scoring shots they man-

hard to win at
Canterbury Park,
but we were
confident with
the 22 we had
Jason Stevens
aged 3.7 in the first quarter
with an across-the-ground
breeze difficult to manage
on an otherwise perfect autumn day.
The Flat midfield headed
by Greer and Tom Holman,
aided by pacy wingers Sam
Maddern and Ash Benbow,
hardly allowed the ball into
the Hawks front half.
Marty Kelly was a revelation for the Roos. His possession count was in double
figures by quarter-time and
although it took the Roos 18
minutes to land their first
major, they were 17 points up
by the first change
While Eaglehawk did not
add to its score in the second term, the Roos put the
final result beyond reach by
adding 5.6 at the Simpsons
Road end.

Eaglehawks field kicking

was atrocious. Four times
before the long break Hawks
players booted the ball outof-bounds on the full down
the grandstand wing. They
also consistently missed
team-mates who were in
the clear with appalling chip
kicks, handing the ball back
to Roo opponents.
Hawks key forward Cam
McGlashan shone in the
third term. He hammered
home two goals in two minutes, the second a ripper
from a 52 metre set shot.
But the Roos got going
again in the final quarter
adding 5.2 to Eaglehawks
four straight goals. Healey
was unstoppable, adding
three majors with his fifth
a long shot from the scoreboard flank boundary at the
Simpsons Road end - as impressive as McGlashans in
the third term.
Roos coach Jason Stevens
said it was good to atone for
the round one loss with a win
at Eaglehawk.
Its always hard to win
at Canterbury Park, but we
were confident with the 22
we had. And we realise weve
got a bit of strength to come
back into the side as well,
Stevens said.
