Anchor Text/ Level
The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs! Written by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane
Smith. This story is a rich and complex first grade level book. The book is a
Caldecott Honor and for ages 5-8. The grade level range is from kindergarten
through second grade. The Accelerated Reader (AR) is 3, Lexile (LE) is AD570L,
Guided Reading Level (GR) is Q, and Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is
40. The anchor text is a rich, complex grade level text. All the texts in this set
depend on the purpose and standards given. All texts and anchor text are
connected and help students with a deeper understanding. They all build knowledge
on each other. They are all engaging books that are connected. The anchor text
helps support student achievement of grade level complexity through CCSS. The
anchor text chosen is needed for the activities and standards required in this text
set.
Topic/ Line of Inquiry for the Text Set
The topic for this text set is focused on literacy. The story is a fairy tale story. The
literacy focuses are on comparing and contrasting, retelling the story, story
elements, point of view, and identifying the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
The questions are: Are all versions of The Three Little Pigs the same? How are the
different versions different? Does the point of view change in the different versions
of the story? The story I choose is at first grade level and at their interest level. The
other books and resources are different versions of the, The Three Little Pigs. I
created the text set to help my students understand and identify story elements of
a text. Also, to retell the story and include the beginning, middle, and end of the
story. Next, to identify the point of view of the story. Lastly, I wanted my students to

3
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
fully understand the concept of comparing and contrasting texts. I wanted them to
have a wide variety of texts of The Three Little Pigs to help them with all these
literacy concepts. All of the content areas listed above are First Grade Common Core
Standards that they need to know. At first I started my text set with numerous texts
of common fairy tales. As I was researching, I came up with so many books of
different versions of the original fairy tales. Some were Goldilocks and the Three
Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella. Then, I decided I have enough
resources and texts on the, The Three Little Bears and decided that I mainly wanted
to focus on this story. I found many different versions of the, The Three Little Bears
and felt this would be easier for my first graders to focus on one story, rather than
multiple different stories. I believe that this text set would be grade level
appropriate and engaging for my classroom. I also can connect the story to math
and writing. For math I can have my students design and develop a house like the
three little pigs. They will need to create a three dimensional house using toothpicks
and Dot candies. They will then need to identify the 3 dimensional shapes used and
challenge them on how many vertices and faces it has. For writing I will have my
students write an opinion paper on which story they believe: the pig or the wolf and
stating which point of view the story was told by. They will have to support their
choice by three details from the book.

Anchor Text Annotation and Connections

The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs! The genre is Fairy Tales.
The story is 32 pages long. There are many illustrations on
every page to help support the story and engage first grade
students. This is a fictional story. The summary stated inside
the book is that the wolf gives his own outlandish version of
what really happened when he tangled with three little pigs.
A full summary of the story includes that, everybody things
the Big Bad Wolf is the bad character in the story, but this is a big
misunderstanding. He wants to tell everybody the truth and his side of the story.

Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
This story is a great connection to all the standards being taught. The True
Story of The 3 Little Pigs! is an engaging story and will help student connect to the
original story. I asked my students beforehand if they have heard of the, The Little
Pigs, and they did. Since they all knew the original story, I felt like this would be a
great anchor text to start with. I have many different types of versions of the, The
Little Pigs, and felt this would be a great text set. This is a great story for literacy
and a read aloud. It is a grade level interest text but complex. Since I will be able to
use it as a read aloud, the students will understand the challenging words and we
will be able to discuss the differences as a whole class. The students will be able to
compare and contrast the story, retell the story, sequencing the story, identify the
story elements, and point of view. In addition, I knew I could cross connect to other
subject areas. I would have my students write a opinion piece on, Whose side are
you on? The students will be able to pick the pig side or wolf side and support their
answer with examples from the book. Another writing piece I would have the
students do, is pick the pig or the wolf and have them write from that perspective.
This activity will let me know if they are understanding point of view as well. Lastly,
I will have the students construct a pig house and have them identify how many
faces, how many vertices, and what 3D shapes they used. They will be given
different products, such as toothpicks, marshmallows, and Dots candy to build their
house. The object is to create a house that the wolf cannot blow down. The wolf will
be a blow-dryer.

7
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
All these instructional topics are first grade standards. My first graders have
been learning these standards all year long and this whole text set unit will be a
great review for them. It is important for first graders to understand how to compare
and contrast two stories. Also, they need to identify all the story elements in any
story given. It is important for them to sequence the story together and retell the
story. My students need to learn different points as views and identify who is telling
the story. My students have worked on my opinion papers and need to add
adjectives and make their writing more juicy. The math skills that are included in
this text set, are significant and need to be able to identify 3D shapes, vertices, and
faces on an object. All of these standards are essential for their learning in first
grade and every grade after. They need to know these basics, so they can build on
them in the next grades to come.
Benefits and Constraints

8
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
The benefits of reading this anchor text are that it is a grade level interest book and
engaging. I have read this story to my previous year students and they love it. It is
very interesting for first graders to see a different perspective of a fairy tale, they
already know. Not only is the this a great anchor book, but it allows students to read
other versions of the, The Little Pigs, and be able to compare and contrast more
easily. I think it is a great book for identifying point of view, story elements, and
retelling. The other subject are connections are very engaging as well. Students will
love to make a house out of candy and toothpicks, but the most fun part is using the
hair-dryer to see if their house is sturdy enough and will not blow down. Also,
another great skill for them to practice is identifying 3D shapes, vertices, and faces
of a shape. Lastly, I feel the opinion writing will be easy for them to brainstorm
because of the interest level of the book. I feel the constraints would be if I did not
read the anchor text my students would not fully understand all concepts needed to
be understood. I am reading this as a read aloud to help solve this problem. This is a
timely text set and will take weeks to complete. I will have the other text sets
offered during centers because they will be listening on tape and using the
computers for different resources. Overall, I believe this will be a great text set. I
have already started it out with my students and they are so excited. All of the
stories included in the text set are AR books, which means the students can take an
Accelerated Reader test on comprehension after each story is read. I feel this will
help my student accomplish the standards being read as well. My students love
taking AR tests to gain more points for special rewards in the class.

Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
Annotation: The genre of this story is a fairy tale. The
interest level of this book is Pre-K to second grade. The book
is 32 pages long. This book is vital to the text set as well
because it is the original story of The Three Little Pigs. Most
students already know the story of The Three Little Pigs but
this will help refresh their brains on the story. They will
need to understand the story to help identify the standards
being asked of them. This book is used at the end of the text
set, along with the anchor text. They will be writing an opinion piece on which point
of view they believe is true. They will put the story in sequence order and compare
and contrast the story in a Venn Diagram with the anchor text.
Level: The grade level range of interest is Pre-K through second grade. The reading
level is, Accelerated Reader is 3.3. The Lexile is 560L. The Grade Reading Level is L.
The DRA is 20. This book has received a Caldecott Honor.
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this book is that it is engaging and it is
the original story of The Three Little Pigs. This book is vital to the text sort because
they are comparing and contrasting the original story and The True Story of the
Little Pigs after all text sets have been viewed. A the end of the unit my students
will write an opinion paper on whether they believe the pig version or the wolf
version. In addition, they will have to compare and contrast the two stories using a
Venn Diagram. After they read the book they will be conducting a sequence
assignment, where they have to put the cards in order of the story. Also they will
have to match up the picture with the story element and point of view from the
story. This will help with grasping the concepts of all standards mentioned they
should be working on during this text set. This book is audio CD and will played for

13
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
my students and will follow along in their book. The constraints are that this book is
a higher reading level, but it will be on audio for the students to follow along with
the book.
Anchor and Inquiry Connection: This book is vital to the text set because they
will be comparing and contrasting the story to the anchor text. They will also write
an opinion piece on the point of view that they believe is true. They will also retell
the story in order and identify the story elements. I believe this is an engaging story
that will be extremely helpful to the text set.

engaging for my students to have the book on YouTube. The pages of the book are

14
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
shown as well as the book being read aloud to them. The book would be too hard for
some if had to be read independently, but the book is at their interest level.
Anchor and Inquiry Connection: This book helps with the anchor text provided in
the text set. The book helps correlate with the standards being addressed in this
text set. This is another way the students can compare and contrast the story and
identify the story elements. They also can retell the story and identify the point of
view. The students would have a recording sheet to fill out, where they need to
identify the point of view, characters, setting, problem, and solution, and compare
and contrast those with the anchor text. I think this is a great way to practice these
skills.

8. Reader's Theater of The Three Little Pigs by Paul Goldone
Annotation: This is a reader's theater of the original story of The Three Little Pigs.
The genre is a fairy tale. the script is 4 pages long. There are 5
characters in this reader's theater. This will help students
comprehend the story and retell the story by acting it out with
masks and pretending to be the characters. They will be able to
work on retelling the story and story elements. I would use this
because they absolutely love acting out stories. They all couldn't
wait to go this center. They practiced as a group and then presented
to the whole class. We recorded the reader's theater to show their
parents and principal. They were really excited about this. They had to listen to the
narrator and understand the setting, plot, and different scenes they would be acting
out.
Level: This reader's theater is for grades first and second. Since they are working in
small groups and have all different reading levels, this would allow their higher
readers to help when students would get stuck on a word.

18
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this reader's theater is for
the students to act out the story. By doing
this, they are retelling the story. They are
gaining more experiences on the original
story in this reader's theater which will help them
complete their

compare and contrast Venn Diagram of this story and the

anchor text. Also

deciding if they believe the pig or wolf's side of the story

by identifying the point of view. Lastly, they are gaining more insight on the story
elements through the script and having the narrator identify these story elements.
The constraints are that the struggling readers might struggle at times but since the
groups are mixed ability, they will have support to the help them.
Anchor and Inquiry Connection: This reader's theater helps support the anchor
text and inquiry connection of all the standards. They will be acting out and retelling
the original story and then later comparing and contrasting it to the anchor text.
They will also be writing an opinion paper on either the wolf or pig's perspective
that they believe to be true. The students will be able to indentify story elements
through the script as well. The narrator will be helping to point these out as well
through the script.
9. Reader's Theater of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon
Scieska
Annotation: The genre is a fairy tale. The reader's theater script is 9 characters
long. The script is 3 pages long. This will help support the anchor text
because it is the same story but the students will be able to act out
the story. When they are acting out the story this does help children
remember what is being taught. This will help with the standards in

19
Multimedia/Multimodal Text Set- Three Little Pigs
the inquiry because they will be retelling the story, while reading they will identify
the story elements, identify the point of view, and be able to write an opinion piece
on what point of view they believe is correct.
Level: This reader's theater script is grades first and second grade. . Since they are
working in small groups and have all different reading levels, this would allow their
higher readers to help when students would get stuck on a word.
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this reader's theater is for the students
to act out the story. By doing this, they are retelling the story. They are gaining
more experiences on the anchor text in this reader's theater which will help them
complete their compare and contrast Venn Diagram of this story and the anchor
text. Also deciding if they believe the pig or wolf's side of the story by identifying
the point of view. Lastly, they are gaining more insight on the story elements
through the script and having the narrator identify these story elements. The
constraints are that the struggling readers might struggle at times but since the
groups are mixed ability, they will have support to the help them.

I was able to start the text set and they completed only some of the different tasks.
They had a lot of fun and it was very engaging. They were definitely grasping the
concept of comparing and contrasting the different versions of the story. Also, they
were able to identify the different points of view. On top of that , they were able to
retell the stories and identify story elements. It has been very fun. My students and
I are enjoying this text set so far!
