TOLLESON UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

COURSE:
Algebra 1; Unit 3; Interpreting Functions
Topic 4: Identify Key Features and Interpret Average
Rate of Change
Standards
F-IF.B.4 For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of
graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal
description of the relationship. Key features include: intercepts; intervals where the function is
increasing, decreasing, positive, or negative; relative maximums and minimums; symmetries; end
behavior; and periodicity.
F-IF.B.6
Calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a function (presented symbolically
or as a table) over a specified interval. Estimate the rate of change from a graph. *We will interpret
rate of change. Calculate rate of change is in unit 4.
Math Practices:
INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE
3.4.1 (Suggested 2 days)
OBJECTIVE

Students will be able to identify and describe the meaning of key features of
graphs and tables.
(Key features include increasing and decreasing, intercepts, maximums and
minimums, symmetries, and end behavior)

DAILY WORD
PROBLEM

Hectors service club is raising money by wrapping presents in the mall. The
function f(x) = 3x describes the amount of money, in dollars, the club will earn
for wrapping x presents. They only have enough wrapping paper to wrap 1000
presents.
Identify the domain and range of this problem.
Students will use their calculators to graph functions and identify key features.

DAILY WORD
PROBLEM

An object is launched at 19.6 meters per second (m/s) from a 58.8-meter tall
platform. The equation for the object's height s at time t seconds after launch is
s(t) = 4.9t2 + 19.6t + 58.8, where s is in meters. When does the object strike
the ground?
Students should use calculators to practice graphing and estimate their answer.
