PASTORAL CARE
SCI operates the worlds only full-time, free legal aid program for
merchant mariners. The Center for Seafarers Rights works to
improve laws and practices that protect mariners and increase the
safety and security of the maritime industry.
MARITIME EDUCATION
VOLUNTEER KNITTING
Dear Friends,
Maritime commerce touches the lives of just about everybody on this planet.
Journeys across thousands of miles of water underpin the global trade system
that supplies us with the amenities of modern lifefrom cell phones to gas
to food on our table.
Because of the shipping industry, we sit at one enormous table with the
entire human family. And, theres a place for every person at this tablea
role that each of us plays to build and strengthen the relationships that make
for a friendlier and healthier world for everyone involved.
Thanks to you, our sponsors and donors, for making such enormous
contributions to our maritime gathering. Your support in 2015 brought a lot
to the table.

A SHARED TABLE
The Rev. David M. Rider
President & Executive Director
Building upon a legacy dating back to 1834, SCI strives to serve individual mariners while calling the global maritime
world together around one shared table.
In generations past, storied benefactors like Astor, Carnegie, Morgan and Vanderbilt gathered to use their influence to
better the lives of American and international seafarers. As these guides passed on, new industry titans took their place
at the table of SCIs leadership, making us more global, diverse and agile in our service to mariners near and far.
In 2015, SCI trustees, staff and donors worked to set a table of hospitality, thought leadership and creative service to
the maritime industry we love. A Silver Bell Forum shared the newest insights on emerging regulations and shipboard
technology. Our Center for Seafarers Rights traveled globally to address issues like MLC, 2006 and shore-leave
access. Our river chaplains undertook advanced emergency response training to serve mariners in times of crisis.
In Houston, our Center for Maritime Education brought together training partners to plan a new generation of
simulation infrastructure and e-learning.
SCI draws maritime leaders to a common table for collaboration and a safe place to address vexing issues.
Concurrently, we send our chaplains, maritime instructors and other ambassadors out to engage mariners along our
nations river system, on coastwise routes and aboard ships calling in Port Newark. Coming and going, we seek to
combine the ancient art of hospitality with the latest best practices for training, pastoral care and advocacy.
Please read our Annual Report to understand better why SCI matters to mariners and why you matter to SCI.
Thanks for your enduring support and prayers in 2015.

SEA LEGS
In the January 2015 edition of the
Martin Marine newsletter, the company
highlighted the wheelmen who trained
with SCI. The article describes
our simulators as so realistic that
you might just lose your sea legs in
stormy simulations!
AN ARCHIVAL
INTERVENTION
In January, SCI Senior Archivist Johnathan
Thayer gave a presentation entitled The
Seamens Church Institutes American
Merchant Marine Veterans Oral History
Project: An Archival Intervention, during
a panel about digital public history at the
2015 annual meeting of the American
Historical Association in New York. The
gathering of historians, graduate students
and academics from across the country
provided an excellent opportunity to share
work on SCIs digital repository of oral
history interviews, which includes more
than 50 interviewees and 800 audio clips
available online.

SCIs Oral History Project website below.

CHAPLAINS HONE
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
SKILLS
About once a month, SCIs port or river
chaplains respond to crisis situations
involving serious injury, illness or fatality
aboard vessels entrusted to their care.
To keep pastoral crisis intervention
skills sharp, six SCI chaplains and
chaplain associates participated in a
three-day training course in Atlanta,
GA sponsored by the International
Critical Incident Stress Foundation.
They co-trained with airline crew
support staff, law enforcement and fire
department chaplains to gain breadth and
understanding of best practices regarding
emergency responses.

JUNE
ADVOCATING FOR
SEAFARERS HEALTH
In 2014, SCI began collaborating with
two prominent American medical
institutions to focus on preventative
medicine and healthy lifestyles for
seafarers. At its Center in Port Newark,
students from Rutgers University School
of Nursing provided health assessments,
preventative medicine and healthy living
advice for seafarers. Data collected from
their measurements contributed to a
Yale University School of Medicine study
on seafarers health.

On Thursday, June 4, 2015, at SCIs
38th Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner
in New York City, over 770 individuals
assembled to honor three people who
have made remarkable contributions to
the maritime industry. SCI presented
Angeliki Frangou, Chairman & CEO of
Navios Maritime Holdings Inc., with
the Silver Bell Award for her innovative
leadership in international shipping
and honored Dr. Craig E. Philip and
Captain Robert Bob E. Johnston with
Lifetime Achievement Awards.
JULY
25 YEARS OF SERVICE
In 2015, SCI celebrated 25 years of
service by Douglas B. Stevenson, the
Director of the Center for Seafarers
Rights. Although the Center is based in
the United States, its work has global
impact. Doug assists seafarers with a
variety of legal issues and works with
port chaplains who encounter seafarers
in need of information across the globe.
He strives to improve the laws that
protect seafarers by playing an active
role with the International Maritime
Organization (IMO), an agency of
the United Nations which negotiates
regulations to improve the safety and
security of shipping.
Its a challenging life and thats why
I think our work with the seafarers
ministry is so important, Doug told Paul
Miller on WPHM-AM1380. Its a very
important issue for all of us. Listen to
Doug talk about his work in the short
podcast linked below.

2015 SEAFARER SHORE LEAVE
SURVEY
SCIs Center for Seafarers Rights, with
the assistance of the North American
Maritime Ministry Association and other
seafarer ministries throughout the
United States, conducted its fourteenth
annual Seafarer Shore Leave Survey
during the week of May 2329, 2015.
Compared to last years survey, the
2015 data shows an increase in shore
leave denials for both the percentage of
ships with at least one seafarer denied
shore leave and the percentage of
seafarers denied shore leave.

GATHERING EVERYONE AT
THE TABLE
Chaplain Brandon Mozingo writes,
Whenever there isnt a cook on
board, I take the opportunity to cook
for the crew. Its my way of lessening
their burden and working alongside
them. Its also a good way to gather
everyone at the table. Tonights menu:
