one SWP descriptor file and at least one software file.

The SWP descriptor file, as well as the overall descriptor file (OSWP descriptor file), are ASCII text files.
An SWP descriptor file contains following information:
 The

version number of the compatible database. This is the version number of the database that can be

interpreted by the considered ISAM-CORE SWP. (see further)

 For

each supported board type, the SWP descriptor file indicates whether the board expects the applicable

software in compressed or uncompressed format.

 For

each supported board type, the SWP descriptor file indicates whether the SW files of that board belong

to the minimum set for that specific SWP or not.

 For

each applicable SW file of a specific board type, the SWP descriptor file contains the file name, the file

format, and the file size.

The descriptor file describes the database version. In this example, A3.600 is for ISAM R3.6.
For each board, there are typically several software files. For LTs, there are typically two. But
for NTs, there are many more!

The above drawing illustrates how an OSWP is composed.

The overall descriptor file contains information over the SWP which belongs to the OSWP:
- the name of the SWP
- the IP-address of the TFTP-server where the SWP can be found.
The OSWP concept was introduced in the 7301 ASAM and there it was possible to have
several SWPs (for IACM and server boards, like the ISM) combined into one OSWP. For ISAM,
there will be only one SWP per OSWP.

The TFTP client in the ISAM now knows all the information necessary to get the OSWP
descriptor file from the TFTP server.
The transfer of files (descriptor file, SW file, or database tar-file) will be a part of some
SW-DB-processes. The file transfer will be performed via TFTP and a specific service inside
the ISAM (i.e. the TFTP service) will be responsible for the handling of the TFTP protocol.
Files will always be transferred between the ISAM and an TFTP server. This TFTP server can
be collocated on the same machine as the SNMP manager or it can be located on (a) separate
machine(s).

4) Retrieval of Software Descriptor Files of SWPs

The OSWP descriptor file specifies for each SWP the path name of the corresponding SWP
descriptor file and the TFTP-server where that SWP descriptor file can be found.
The system downloads the SWP descriptor file of each SWP, specified in the overall descriptor
file and not yet available in the system.
5) Check
Each SWP descriptor file specifies the different SW files supported by the corresponding SWP.
The exact size of each SW file is also mentioned in the SWP descriptor file. Based on this
information, the system defines all the SW files that still need to be downloaded.
After selection of all the files that must be downloaded, the system first checks if sufficient
resources are available for their persistent storage.

TAC42055_HO01 Edition I2.0

6) Download of SW files
A SW file specified in one of the SWP descriptor files of the OSWP will only be downloaded in case
it is not yet available in the system.
Each SWP descriptor file specifies the different applicable SW file(s) and whether or not they
belong to the minimum set of the OSWP. The system downloads the SW files that are specified in
the downloaded SWP descriptor files on the following conditions:
 Sufficient

resources are available for their persistent storage.

 The

SW file is not yet available in the system.

 The

SW file belongs to the actual set of the new OSWP, which means that the SW file belongs

to the minimum set of the new OSWP or to a board type that is planned and/or detected in
the system.
The system downloads the selected SW files in the following order:
 The

SW files that belong to the minimum set of the new OSWP.

 The

SW files belonging to the actual set, but not to the minimum set of the OSWP (if

requested by the manager).

Note: The SHUB SW file is part of a SWP and is handled as any other SW file.

Activating OSWP allows an operator to perform upgrade/rollback of an NE. The software on all boards
will be upgraded at once. (For SW upgrade of individual LT boards refer to SW overrule.)
Concerning Committing OSWP, the ISAM will commit an OSWP only if two OSWPs are available.
The commit operation is only possible on an enabled/Active/uncommitted OSWP and the other OSWP
must have status enabled/NotActive/committed. It can only be initiated by an explicit request from
the management station. After the acceptance of the commit request, the system will remove all
persistent stored files that are not related to the Active OSWP. When the commit request is
terminated, the Active OSWP is the only OSWP in the system. The status of this OSWP will be
Enabled/Active/Committed.
Concerning Aborting OSWP, the manager also has the possibility to request the ISAM to remove an
OSWP from its storage device, on the condition that this OSWP is NotActive and uncommitted or to
stop the downloading of an OSWP.
Boards for which the SW Overrule parameter is enabled will be loaded with the applicable SW files
belonging to the Enabled/Active/Committed OSWP. The SW Overrule parameter will automatically be
disabled by the ISAM.
There are two ways of deleting an OSWP: abort and commit. These commands are useful in different
situations:
 To

get rid of a committed, but inactive OSWP, youll have to commit the other OSWP, which is
active but uncommitted.

 To

get rid of an OSWP which has never been committed, youll have to use the command Abort.

Initially, the ISAM contains one OSWP. This OSWP is committed and its software is active on
the different ISAM boards.
Next, the manager (on explicit operator command) requests the ISAM to download a new
OSWP.
The ISAM itself fetches the requested OSWP from the file server. After the download process,
two OSWPs are available in the ISAM: the current active OSWP and the new downloaded
OSWP.
In a next step (assuming the operator wants to keep the new downloaded OSWP), the
manager (on explicit operator command) requests the ISAM to activate the software of the
downloaded OSWP on all the boards. The previously active OSWP will stay available in the
ISAM. By doing this, the manager still has the possibility to request the ISAM to rollback to
this previous active OSWP in case the operator is not satisfied with the new OSWP.
Finally, (when the operator is satisfied with the new OSWP), the manager requests the ISAM
to commit the new OSWP. The previously active OSWP will be removed from the ISAM
software storage device.
If the operator changes his mind while downloading a new OSWP or after completing the
download (as long as the OSWP has never been committed), he can abort the OSWP.

The directory /var/opt/ams is the default directory for data. At installation time, the installer
may decide to select a different directory.
First you must put the SWP in the dedicated directory:
 /var/opt/ams/shared/ne/software

When you create the OSWP, the AMS will look in this directory for any SWPs. These SWPs
will appear in the list. You can pick your choice.

Therere two options in the creation of NE SW Releases:

NE SW Release From Repacked Archive create SW from repacked archive generated in step 2. (please refer
to slides 2.8)
NE SW Release create SW from archive downloaded from OLCS. (please refer to slides 2.2-2.5)

From R9.2.30 onwards, AMS hides the script ams_sw_repack.sh by which the operator can manually change
the structure in previous releases. The process of repacking is performed by AMS automatically. The
generated repacked archive locates at the folder /shared/common/ne/software/repacked which is
introduced in R9.2.30. As long as the existence of a repacked archive, ONT SW Release From Repacked
Archive can be used to create the ONT SW package as well. If an un-repacked archive is chosen, an error will
pop up indicating The file has an invalid structure.

The MIB is stored on the FLASH of the NT board. Software is also stored on the FLASH, but
is not part of the MIB.
This is important because a backup only contains the configuration data, i.e. the MIB, and not
the software!

3.2 Upgrade versus migration

Upgrade:
During SW update the DB is not modified. No new database is created.
e.g. upgrade within the same major release, from 3.3.x to 3.3.y
Migration:
A system software update during which the DB is modified and must be
converted to be compatible with the new SW release.
e.g. migration when you update SW from one major release to
another, e.g. from 3.6 to 3.7
A migration tool is needed to modify the DB

Case 1
Suppose we have an NE with a certain initial configuration. The NE is using that configuration
=> it is the actual configuration.
We want to do a software upgrade => You download a new OSWP that is also compatible
with DB-version x. In this case, the DB can be linked to the 2 OSWPs. Of course, only one
OSWP can be active at a time.

Case 2
An OSWP can be compatible with only one DBversion. Or in other words, it is not possible
that one OSWP can be linked with two DBs with different DB-version.

A database that used to be actual can never become preferred afterwards.

The state will then be previous instead.
In a similar way, different states are defined for the inactive OSWP:
 Actual

DB that will be used after a successful activation of the inactive OSWP, unless theres
a preferable DB
(DB may or may not have been used by the inactive OSWP before.)

 Preferable

DB not used yet. There is also a actual DB available.

Preferable DB will be used after the successful activation of the inactive OSWP.

 Previous

On the slide, you can see the state transitions of DB containers on ISAM.
When you do a restore, there are several phases in the process:
 First

you download the data from the backup in an available DB container (in this case:

DB container 2). This DB container gets the (intermediate) state: preferred.

 Then

the NE restarts with the preferred DB (in this case with DB container 2).

This one will become the actual and the one that used to be actual gets the state
previous.
In the example, the OSWP is linked to two DB containers (DB container 1 previous; DB
container 2 actual).

In this example, the node had two OSWPs:

 OSWP1

 OSWP2

There are two database containers used:

 Container

1 is the actual DB for the active OSWP1. Since it not compatible with OSWP2,

it is not useful for OSWP2.

 Container

2 is the actual DB for the not-active OSWP2. Since it not compatible with

OSWP1, it is not useful for OSWP1.

Software Management exercises

Have a look at the SWP descriptor file of the active OSWP on your DSLAM. Where can you
find this?

Create a new OSWP. Ask your teacher which SWP to use.

Download your OSWP to your NE. Check the status afterwards (enabled?).
(What do you need to do is theres no room for an additional OSWP on the NE?)

Select an LT and overrule the software for this board. How can you check which SW is
used?

Activate your OSWP. Check the status of both OSWPs on your system.

Insert a new type of board in your NE. What is the operational status of this board? What
do you need to do to make this board operational?

What can you do to get rid of the old OSWP? Try it.

Syslog server

Syslog generates messages and sends them to a collector (server)

indicating status, actions, possible problems etc.
Within the ISAM several applications are able to generate messages:
protocol tracing, CLI, TL1, Alarms,
Very useful for equipment monitoring

System logging (SYSLOG) allows you to trace and audit system behavior related to operator
activities. System log entries are issued by actions such as CLI and TL1 user logins that are
processed and recorded in system log files.
With system logging, you can do the following:
 create

up to 64 custom system logs that can be saved locally or to a remote server

location
 create

filters to determine which messages are sent

1 Concepts & Principles

1.5 In the ISAM

NE supports SYSLOG according to RFC3164
System statistics logs are user configurable and you can create up to
64 system logs. System logs can be saved locally, to a remote server,
or to all active CLI or all active TL1 terminals
Using filters, you can determine which messages are sent using which

facility
The severity of the various application messages is predefined. It is
reported as follows:
Service Affecting alarm messages: EMERGENCY
Authentication messages: ALERT
Configuration change messages: NOTICE
Other CLI/TL1 messages (admin, Show, retrieve): INFO
protocol tracing: DEBUG
videoCDR reporting: NOTICE

Severities indicated in blue are the ones that can be sent by the ISAM.
As mentioned a couple of slides ago, the severities correspond with the following:
 Emergency:
 Alert:

service affecting alarm messages

authentication messages

 Notice:

configuration change and video call detail records (CDR) messages

 Information:
 Debug:

other CLI/TL1 messages

protocol tracing messages

Note: be aware that depending on the message type defined previously in the command, only
one severity might be sent! For example, when the message type is set to tracing1 (or 2 or
3) only messages with a severity debug can be sent. This is because the tracing message
type contains the protocol tracing messages which all have a severity debug. So enabling
other severities under this will have no effect.
