Sports a fresh black-eye, winces in pain.

YOUNGER SISTER (O.S.)

DAD'S VOICE (O.S.)

How's the little apple of my eye.
Eve presses her ear to the door. Someone KNOCKS.
EVE
(annoyed)
What!?
MEREDITH (O.S.)
(right back at her)
Dinner in ten minutes!
Eve peeks through the door's keyhole.
HER POV: FRONT DOOR OF THE HOUSE
Her father PHILLIP is a LATINO SURGEON, mid-forties and wellbuilt. He sports hospital scrubs and carries a duffel bag.
This is PHILLIP; Eve's biological father.
Eves little sister DANIELLE wears an apple costume. Phillip
kisses Meredith and then carries Danielle into the kitchen.
INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT
The Serrano Family sits around the dinner table, talking more
than eating.
MEREDITH
(to Phillip)
...That crap they're feeding them
goes against everything we as a
family stand for.
Eves other younger sister SAMANTHA, 12, argues with Danielle
SAMANTHA
You can't just make up your own
names Danielle!
Yes I can!

DANIELLE

MEREDITH
For the money we're paying they
should be offering our kids a real
menu...with choices.
Phillip sips red wine and is now casually dressed. He has
book-worm looks with the fierce intensity of a fighter. He
Glances up at Eve. She picks at her food.
MEREDITH (CONT'D)
..And it should be redesigned by
the parents, not the school.
Because they obviously don't care.
If they cared...
SAMANTHA
No you can't!!! No you
can't!!!

DANIELLE
Yes I can!!! Yes I can!!!

MEREDITH (CONT'D)
...They would redesign the lunch
program and we would vote on what
our children eat.
Mom!

SAMANTHA

Phillip bangs on the table.

PHILLIP
Girls stop it!
The room suddenly goes quiet; you could cut the tension with
a knife. After a few moment's silence:
EVE
I got a job today.
PHILLIP
(lightening-up)
That's great honey.
EVE
Well it's an interview. But my
friend works there, she says I have
a really good shot at getting it.
SAMANTHA
(low)
Mom tell Danielle she can't name
all the characters after her.

DANIELLE
Her name is Princess Danielle now
shut up!
MEREDITH
Eat your dinner Sammy, Danielle
stop playing with your food.
Meredith attempts to quell the uneasy atmosphere; Phillip has
had a stressful day at work and could snap at any moment.
PHILLIP
What kind of job is it?
EVE
It's a record label. I'd be helping
them out with the phones, office
stuff. It's part time so I can
still have time to audition.
PHILLIP
Well let's hope you get it.
MEREDITH
Sounds like an internship. Is it an
internship?
No.

EVE

MEREDITH
How much does it pay?
EVE
I don't know, it's rude to ask that
over the phone.
MEREDITH
I know it's Halloween, but take off
your makeup before you come to the
dinner table.
DANIELLE
I want makeup.
MEREDITH
See. You're influencing your
sisters.
EVE
They're not my real sisters.
MEREDITH
Don't start.

PHILLIP
(to Eve)
She's right.
The family eats in silence.
EVE
It's not makeup.
FORKS hit plates. Phillip's eyes fill with distress.
PHILLIP
Is that real?
Yes.

EVE

PHILLIP
What the hell happened?
Meredith grab the ice-pack.
Let me take a look.
Meredith heads into the kitchen. Phillip inspects Eve's blackeye. All attention is now on her.
PHILLIP (CONT'D)
(in Spanish)
How did this happen?
Tears begin to form in Eve's eyes.
EVE
I was at the mall earlier. I got
dropped off in the parking lot. I
was walking by myself, alone and...
Phillip's BEEPER goes off.
PHILLIP
(in Spanish)
Fuck!
He removes his hands from her face and checks the beeper.
PHILLIP (CONT'D)
(to Meredith)
Twelve hours at the ER and they're
still fucking paging me!
(to Eve)
Here, press this to your eye.
He exits. Moments later we hear:

PHILLIP (CONT'D)
This is Dr. Serrano, I was paged.
Excuse me but I am not on call. No
I am not!
Danielle swallows a piece of food. She starts to CHOKE.
Danielle?

MEREDITH
Oh my God!

Phillip!

MARC
I'm on the phone!
Meredith rushes to her daughter's aid.
MEREDITH
Breathe honey breathe, spit it out!
Felipe Serrano get the fuck in
here!!!
Phillip enters enraged with the phone to his ear. He sees
Danielle suffocating, drops the phone and runs to her.
PHILLIP
Just relax baby!
He performs the Heimlich maneuver.
Samantha cries in fear, praying with her hands folded.
Eve watches calmly with the ice-pack pressed to her eye.
Daniel starts to turn blue. Phillips continues to thrust on
her tiny abdomen. After several agonizing moments Danielle
coughs out the piece of food.
MEREDITH
It's OK sweetheart, it's alright.
I'm here, mommy's here.
Meredith soothes a CRYING Danielle. Phillip picks up the
phone, exits frame angry and exhausted. Samantha thanks God
for sparing her little sister. Eve stares up at the ceiling
with desperation written all over her face.
