I. Introduction
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge,
skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling,
discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. Education frequently takes place
under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves. Education
can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative
effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational.
Education commonly is divided formally into such stages as preschool or
kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and then college.
Education not only creates a better human being but also conrtibutes
to the transformation of the society. We are summoned to take forward
our community, villages, city, state, world. But to get that we need tools.
The tools to improve the world are not fighting ideologies, or weapons as many have tried though history - but knowledge, science and arts.
These tools empower people who sincerely want to see more just and fair
world. Furthermore, the paradox that we find ourselves happy when we
forget our own self and focus on the well being of other is undeniably
true. Working to improve the society through the tools education
provides, helps us to develop our own capacities, and brings us peace
and tranquility, although that is not the motive.

What is Education?
Education in its broadest, general sense is the means through which
the aims and habits of a group of people lives on from one generation to
the next. Generally, it occurs through any experience that has a
formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts. In its narrow,
technical sense, education is the formal process by which society
deliberately transmit its accumulated knowledge, skills, customs and
values from one generation to another.

According to Plato, Education consists of giving to the body and soul

all the perfection of which they are susceptible. Aristotle define it as the
creation of a sound mind in a sound body.
Pestalozzi on the other hand define education as a natural,
harmonious and progressive development of mans innate power.
Education, according to Gandhi is knowledge which conrtibutes to the
self-development of man and which inspires him to serve society and
therefore, it paves the way for the welfare of humanity in a greater scale.
Its purpose is to bring human beings out of the bonds of slavery.
On the other hand most dictionaries define education as the act or
process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the
powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or
others intellectually for mature life.

Types of Education

1. Formal Education - Formal education occurs in a structured environment whose

explicit purpose is teaching students. Usually, formal education takes place in a school
environment with classrooms of multiple students learning together with a trained, certified
teacher of the subject. Most school systems are designed around a set of values or ideals that
govern all educational choices in that system. Such choices include curriculum, organizational
models, design of the physical learning spaces (e.g. classrooms), student-teacher interactions,
methods of assessment, class size, educational activities, and more.
There are primarily four stages in a formal education, these are:

1.1 Preschool - Preschools provide education from ages

approximately three to seven, depending on the country,
when children enter primary education. These are also
known as nursery schools and as kindergarten, except in
the US, where kindergarten is a term used for primary
education. Kindergarten "provide a child-centered,
preschool curriculum for three- to seven-year-old
children that aim[s] at unfolding the child's physical,
intellectual, and moral nature with balanced emphasis
on each of them.
1.2 Primary - Primary (or elementary) education consists of
the first five to seven years of formal, structured
education. In general, primary education consists of
six to eight years of schooling starting at the age of
five or six, although this varies between, and
sometimes within, countries. The division between
primary and secondary education is somewhat arbitrary,

but it generally occurs at about eleven or twelve years

of age. Some education systems have separate middle
schools, with the transition to the final stage of
secondary education taking place at around the age of
fourteen. Schools that provide primary education, are
mostly referred to as primary schools or elementary
schools. Primary schools are often subdivided into
infant schools and junior school.
1.3 Secondary - In most contemporary educational systems of the world, secondary education
comprises the formal education that occurs during adolescence. It is characterized by transition
from the typically compulsory, comprehensive primary education for minors, to the optional,
selective tertiary, "postsecondary", or "higher" education (e.g. university, vocational school) for
adults. Depending on the system, schools for this period, or a part of it, may be called secondary
or high schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, middle schools, colleges, or vocational schools. The exact
meaning of any of these terms varies from one system to another. The exact boundary between
primary and secondary education also varies from country to country and even within them, but is
generally around the seventh to the tenth year of schooling. Secondary education occurs mainly
during the teenage years.
1.4 Tertiary - Higher education, also called tertiary, third stage, or postsecondary education, is
the non-compulsory educational level that follows the completion of a school such as a high
school or secondary school. Tertiary education is normally taken to include undergraduate and
postgraduate education, as well as vocational education and training. Colleges and universities
mainly provide tertiary education. Collectively, these are sometimes known as tertiary
institutions. Individuals who complete tertiary education generally receive certificates, diplomas,
or academic degrees.
2. Adult Education - as the name suggest, adult education refers to a practice of educating
adults. There are different forms of adult education namely: Formal class based learning, e-

learning and self-directed learning. There are also some career specific courses are real estate
license, medical billing, bookkeeping, etc. Most of these courses are available online.
3. Alternative Education - This type of education is actually an alternative approach to
traditional or mainstream education. This education alternative is often rooted in several
philosophies that are quite different from that of mainstream education.
4. Special Education - There are students who require special learning needs, which are
addressed through special education. According to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act), a child is first identified as one who requires special education support; then the child is
evaluated and on its basis, his/her eligibility is determined. Finally, an Individualized Education
Program (IEP) is written and the plan is carried out effectively.

III. Summary
Education can be defined as the knowledge of putting ones potential into maximum
use. It helps a person to make the right decision in the sphere of life.
The different types of education are Formal, Adult, Alternative and Special.
There are primarily four stages of Formal education, these are Preschool, Primary,
Secondary and Tertiary Education.
It is advisable that you complete higher education. On completion of the course
you ll receive academic degrees, diploma or certificates that will help you to get a better
job, which in turn, will help you to build a solid financial footing for yourself.
Education could be seen as wings for the progress of the human beings. It helps
the individual to attain intellectual, physical and spiritual or emotional progress. In
some ways, it helps the individual to live a happier life. For people without education,
living comfortably turns difficult especially in the modern world where specific skills
are often needed to work. Besides, education is real wealth. Understanding how the
world around us functions produces happiness, a kind of happiness that does not
disappear. True education dignifies the individual.
