Celebrating eighth-grade graduation

Mayor Cahn makes

announcement after
dozens speak out
at council meeting
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Dozens of worried residents
from the Kingston neighborhood
came to last Mondays council
meeting.
The residents heard talk of
Cherry Hill Township moving its
town hall to the Kingston neighborhood and of a Realtor approaching some residents with a
cash offer for their homes.
By the time the meeting ended
shortly after 9 p.m., many of the
residents felt some relief. After
more than an hour of public comment, Mayor Chuck Cahn said
the township would not place any
potential future town hall in the
Kingston neighborhood.
Were not going to put town
hall in your neighborhood if you
dont want it, Cahn told the
crowd in attendance.
The turnout at the meeting
came after multiple Kingston resplease see TOWNSHIP, page 12

Looking back at high school

Graduates of Cherry Hill East and West reflect on experiences
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Everyones high school experience is different.
Cherry Hill High School West
graduate Owen Barrett spent his
time participating in numerous
clubs and sports teams.
Cherry Hill High School East
grad Brett Dashevskys passion
was being involved with student
government.
Another Cherry Hill West
graduate, Rebecca Horner, was
president of the National Honor
Society.

Cherry Hill East grad Charlotte Montgomery loved getting

involved in Spirit Week with her
friends.
All four students spent their
time in high school differently,
but all four had similar feelings
in the days leading up to their
high school graduation last week.
Last Thursday, seniors from
Cherry Hill East and Cherry Hill
West bid farewell to high school
and said hello to their future as
they received their high school
diplomas. Each high school held a

I'm definitely nervous, but I'm
very excited, Montgomery said
prior to graduation. It's going to
be hard, because it's going to be
our official goodbye to the high
school.
Montgomery got to speak in
front of her peers at last weeks
ceremony. Montgomery was chosen to speak after she entered a
contest where seniors write a
speech and submit it to a committee. The speeches are read anonymously and the best ones make it
to the second round. In the second
round, each of the speechwriters
had to give their speech in front of
the committee. Montgomerys
speech was chosen for graduation.
This is something I've always
wanted to do, Montgomery said.
I always wanted to speak at graduation.
As president of the National
Honor Society, Horner was chosen as a speaker for Cherry Hill
Wests graduation. Looking back
on her high school career,
Horners favorite memories revolved around sports.
The two that have stood out
are sporting events, whether I'm
sitting in the stands or on the
field with the soccer team or the
dance team, Horner said. Being
part of a team is really fun.
Dashevsky also enjoyed participating in student activities at
Cherry Hill East. He enjoyed
them so much that one of the reasons he decided to join the student government association was
to help plan activities for his
peers. Dashevsky was the SGA
president this past school year.
I kind of wanted all of my fellow classmates to have a great
high school experience where I
could plan events for them, he
said. We planned events like
homecoming. We did 3-on-3 basketball
tournaments
and
fundraisers that impacted everybody.
Barrett felt he got the most of

Adopted kitten tests positive for rabies

Kitten did not exhibit symptoms until four days after adoption from AWA
The Camden County Health
Department has been notified by
the state Department of Health
and Human Services that a kitten
in Cherry Hill has tested positive
for rabies.
On June 5, a Cherry Hill couple
adopted a kitten from the Animal
Welfare Association shelter in
Voorhees. The kitten received its
first rabies vaccination on May
28. On June 9, the kitten began to
exhibit neurological symptoms
and aggressive behavior. The kitten was taken to a veterinarian,
and during the examination the
kitten bit both owners. The kitten
was euthanized and prepared for
rabies testing at the state Public
Health & Environmental Laboratory.
On June 15, the Camden County Department of Health was notified that the animal had tested
positive for rabies. The owners

will receive rabies post-exposure
prophylaxis. One of the owners
began treatment prior to receiving the results. The Department
of Health has not provided the
name or address of the couple.
The staff of AWA is working
with the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services to identify any other potential animal and human exposures.
Although rabies is a serious
illness, it can be prevented by
early treatment, said Camden
County Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden
County Health Department. If
you have been bitten or scratched
by an animal it is important that
you seek immediate medical attention.
Rodriguez urged county residents to observe a few simple

rules, including acting responsibly as a pet owner:

1. Keep vaccinations up to
date for all dogs, cats, and ferrets.
2. Keep your pets under direct
supervision so they do not come
in contact with wild animals. If
your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance
for the animal immediately.
3. Contact your local animal
control agency to remove any
stray animals from your neighborhood. They may be unvaccinated and could be infected by the
disease.
Rodriguez said its also important to avoid direct contact with
unfamiliar animals:
1. Enjoy wild animals such as
raccoons, skunks and foxes from
afar. Do not handle, feed or unintentionally attract wild animals

summer is here!
Life changes here in New Jersey for
two-and-a-half months once school
lets out for summer recess. The kiddies are home, which makes us change
our normal routine. Traffic eases up at
the typical before-school and afterschool rushes, and families head out of
town for vacation.
We here at The Sun dont take vacations. Well, thats not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and
things that make our town so wonderful.
Every summer, the end of the school

True, summer often does signal a

there is plenty of newsworthy happenings around town to keep your interest
piqued.
Summer is a time when we often

Cooper Landing Road

under construction
The Camden County Freeholder Boards Department of Public
Works has begun a roadway improvement project on Cooper
Landing Road in Cherry Hill.
Cooper Landing Road connects Route 70 to Route 38, making it one of the busiest roads in
the area. It is our responsibility
to keep it in the best condition
possible for those who travel that
route every day, said Freeholder
Susan Shin Angulo, liaison to the
CCDPW. We ask that motorists
report any roadway concerns
they encounter to us. We need the
public to be engaged in the effort
to make Camden County a
better place to live and drive
throughout our 1,400 lane miles of
highway.
The $2.8 million project will include the repaving of the roadway from the vicinity of Route 70

to the vicinity of Route 38, the installation of traffic striping, pavement markers and handicap
ramps, along with the replacement of some curbing, driveway
aprons and sidewalks.
The project is expected to be
completed in about six months.
The exact timing of the project is
dependent upon the weather and
other factors. Motorists should be
cognizant of the project and expect some delays around the area
of construction during peak drive
times.
Camden County is aggressive
about repairing all county maintained roads. The Freeholder
Board asks residents to report
road hazards they encounter to
the Camden County Public Works
Hotline (856) 566-2980. The number is answered 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.

Art Goes to School

in need of volunteers
Art Goes to School is an organization that has been in the Cherry Hill school district for many
years. AGTS brings reproductions of important artwork to
children grades one to five. Pictures are on loan from the
Philadelphia Museum of Art
each year.
At the end of the school session
in June, an AGTS representative
returns the art to the Philadelphia Art Museum and new selections are made for the following
year.
Volunteers to the Art Goes to
School program prepare in September to teach the Cherry Hill
students about the art pictures.
Each person chooses their favorite picture, prepares a report
on it and shares the information
with the group. Many of the pictures have information that is included in the portfolio that can be
used. The meetings are weekly,

lasting one and a half hours, including breakfast. Lesson plans

are worked on by the group during the final days of preparation
so each person feels comfortable
with the portfolio that will be presented. All classroom assignments to the schools are based on
the volunteers personal schedule.
Presently this program is in
need of new volunteers. The
group consists of mothers, grandmothers, retired teachers or anyone who has an interest in art or
would like to learn more about
art and its artist. No prior art
background is needed. A love of
children, an opportunity to meet
new friends and the desire to explore something new in your life
is all you need to be a member of
this enriching program. Breakfast is even provided.

Township not even

at stage one, Cahn says
TOWNSHIP
Continued from page 1
idents said a Realtor contacted
them in the spring, asking if they
were willing to sell their home to
an undisclosed interested buyer.
Later in the spring, township
officials said they were in the
very preliminary stages of a
needs assessment to see if the
township needs to renovate or replace town hall. Township director of communications Bridget
Palmer said the properties of 1101
and 1103 North Kings Highway
would be a potentially good site.
The properties, currently for sale,
are adjacent to some of the homes
a Realtor had approached with an
offer to sell.
Some residents came to the
meeting thinking the township
was the party interested in purchasing the homes.
Carmen Argentina, a resident
of Cherry Hill for more than 50
years, was one homeowner who
was approached with an offer. He
was very emotional when speaking at the meeting.
Youre not taking my house,
Argentina said.
Cahn explained the township is
not even at stage one when it
comes to a renovation or replacement of town hall. He explained
the township is still conducting a
needs analysis of the current
building and said there are no
proposals or plans drawn up.
We started looking at what
this building is like, Cahn said.

Those of you who have spent

time in this building know that it
is old, it does not meet our needs
and it needs some kind of renovation.
We have all of our options,
Cahn added. One of those options could be moving town hall
to another place.
Cahn said moving town hall to
Kingston was just an idea and
there was no official proposal.
Cahn said he did speak with the
owner of 1101 and 1103 Kings
Highway, Howard Needleman,
about the sites. Cahn mentioned
Needleman is looking to sell the
properties to another developer,
but was interested in purchasing
an adjacent home already for sale
to allow for more space for parking at the property. Cahn mentioned to Needleman the township may be looking to move town
hall, but more space would be
needed for parking. This led to a
Realtor, who Cahn said was representing Needleman, to approach
multiple adjacent homeowners
about selling.
Cahn made it clear the township would not place town hall in
Kingston after the residents
spoke out against any such plan.
The residents complaints ranged
from safety and traffic issues to
whether the location would be
suitable for the neighborhood.
Resident Maria Caterino felt
moving town hall and the police
station from its current location
would be a mistake, saying the
current location is near major
commercial hubs such as Garden
State Park and the Cherry Hill
Mall.
A move of this building would
limit the patrolling of this entire
community, Caterino said.
Following the mayors announcement, council members
thanked residents for coming. In
addition, Councilman Brian
Bauerle and council Vice President Sara Lipsett both personally
apologized to residents who were
upset about having been approached with an offer to sell
their homes.

The Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Center, a leader in exceptional early childhood education
for more than 25 years, is introducing its new Two Day 2s program in September.
The Two Day 2s will offer parents a flexible schedule while also
providing their child with social
and emotional growth and a place
to engage and foster relationships
with other young families.
The Two Day 2s program is
the answer to what many families
have been asking us to provide,
said Donna Snyder, director of

early childhood and family engagement. It is a wonderful program for children to acclimate in
before transitioning into a full
day pre-school program, while
also giving parents their mornings free to themselves, to catch
up with friends over coffee
or get in a great workout at the
JCC.
Parents will enroll their children for a minimum of any two
mornings each week, with the
flexibility to add drop-in additional days as needed with one weeks
notice. Children will be able to

take advantage of everything the

Sari Isdaner Early Childhood
Center has to offer, including
music, art, sports classes in the
JCCs gymnasium, the Imaginarium indoor play structure and
Jewish holiday and Shabbat celebrations. Children will also grow
socially and emotionally and engage in collaborative play with
their peers, an essential skill
learned as a toddler.
To learn more about the Two
Day 2s program and to schedule a
private
tour,
please

Snyder at (856) 424-4444 ext. 1242.

My favorite high school memory for me was when I got team
all-conference for cross country,
Barrett recalled. I was shocked
at first, but at the end I felt so
good because I had worked hard
for four years to get that achievement.
Students from both high
schools will be pursuing a wide
variety of majors at schools all
over the country. Some students,
such as Dashevsky and Horner,
will go to school away from home.
Dashevsky will be heading to the

University of Maryland in the

fall, while Horner will enroll at
the University of Indiana. Others,
such as Montgomery and Barrett,
will stay in the area. Montgomery
is going to Villanova University
in the fall, and Barrett will enroll
at The College of New Jersey.
Regardless of each of the graduates destinations, all agree they
will miss the community at their
respective high school.
As soon as I started maturing
and coming out of my shell, I
quickly realized I was making
friends, and I realized who my
true friends are, Barrett said. It
was a good four years to challenge
myself and achieve what I wanted to achieve.
I think I'm going to miss the
relationships I make with the
teachers and the students, Montgomery said. It's really a good
environment that we have.

A Cherry Hill familys house,

affectionately known to many as
Porters Lodge is getting a new
roof replacing the 30-year-old
leaky structure, thanks to the
roofing industrys No Roof Left
Behind program and M. Rosenblatt Roofing, a family owned and
operated roofing company in
business since 1929. Deserving
families throughout the United
States and Canada are receiving a
much-needed new roof through
this program established in 2009.
Bill and Patricia Porter of
Cherry Hill, received the most
votes among nominees in Camden County. An online voting
campaign was led by the Porters

infants & children seniors families maternity executives

pastor and dozens of friends

whove seen the family help so
many people over the years. Once
finalists were selected in Camden
County, the Porter family received nearly 800 No Roof Left Behind votes of support.
M. Rosenblatt Roofings Eric
and Steve Meller and their team
of professionals led the installation celebration at the Porters
home Saturday, June 4. The
Rosenblatt Roofing team also repaired any structural roof deficiencies and replaced gutters and
downspouts.
Nominated by pastor Curt
Mount of Community of Christ
Church in Woodbury, Bill, 72 and
his wife, Patricia, 69, are overwhelmed by support from friends,
the community and Rosenblatt
Roofing.
Weve always opened our door
to friends and family so they
could hang their hat as long as
they needed a place to stay and
get back on their feet, says Bill
said. Awhile back, one of our
guests made us a sign, Porters
Lodge, because of the number of
people whove stayed with us during their tough times over the
years, he adds. We never
thought we deserved such an awesome reward for something we
have always done helped others
when theyre down.
The Porters have continued to
help others; and by all accounts
have never complained or let on
that times have been tough since
the 2007 recession following the
Porters retirement. Now, their

son, Tyler, 43 and his daughter

Kylie, 11 live with the couple.
The Porters are the most generous people I know and have
helped anyone in need even after
the financial crunch which happened after Bill retired, says
Curt Mount, volunteer pastor at
Community of Christ Church in
Deptford, and a full-time instrumental teacher in the Delanco
School District.
When we found out about
Rosenblatt Roofing and No Roof
Left Behind, we determined there
was no doubt that the Porters are
the most deserving of families.
M. Rosenblatt Roofing is led by
the fourth generation of family
members. Son and father team,
Eric and Steve Meller are delighted to give back to the Porters.
This Cherry Hill family has invested so much in helping other
people for years; now its time for
us to give back to them, said
Steve Meller, company vice president.
Our company has always
backed deserving programs in
the community and helped others
in need; we are proud to be part of
the industrys No Roof Left Behind program for the first time
this year.
No Roof Left Behind is a nationwide program giving folks in
the community a way to help
their good neighbors who have
fallen on hard times. The program provides a local contractor
the framework to provide a new
roof at no cost to a deserving
homeowner in need.
