systems date goes back to the beginning of history, well focus in this chapter on rapidly emerging
data communication systems that are vital to any modern society. The information in this chapter will
enable you to:

Describe the data transmission techniques and channels, and identify the types of organizations that
provide these services for groups and individuals.
Outline the components used to coordinate a complex computing communications network.
Give specific examples of information systems supported by data communication.
