Global Citizen: What is my purpose?
When I was a toddler, I loved the Saturday morning cartoon G.I. Joes, but I soon grew
to enjoy storylines similar to HBOs Band of Brothers. Similarly, from history books to war
documentaries, I was shocked and awed by the repeated bloodshed and blistering footage that,
from then on, humanized war. Over time, I developed a different perception of war. I realized
that there is always a war or conflict somewhere on the globe. I realized that people are always
starving, suffering and dying because of political differences. At this point, I thought about all of
the innocent people that had just died within the past hour because of conflict. Then, I thought
about all of the organizations and people that dedicate their time and lives to end conflict. More
to the point, I learned to see the importance of individuals, government treaties and private
organizations that seek to protect and preserve human life. I believe that Global Citizens can
change the world.
To begin, more effort is required from everyone to protect the defenseless peoples of the
world. Even with all of the governments treaties and government organizations protecting
human rights, there are still individuals helping in their own unique way. First, in the article
Awakening the Divine Spark, a married, dynamic-duo contributes their ideas and prayers to
formulate a declaration for global peace. Author, Kosmos Journal Contributor and President of
the Goi Peace Foundation, Hiroo Saionji deduces, Many of us are sensing that a new phase in
the evolution of human civilization is on the horizon (Saionji). Hiroo Saionji, along with his

wife and foundation partner, Masami Saionji, scour the globe to expand their network of likeminded visionaries. Saionjis message has a framework that, in my opinion, brings his vision to
life. Saionji believes that the human race can create a peaceful planet with a four pillar frame
of Sustainability, Systems, Science, and Spirituality (Saionji). I agree with Saionjis message
because the human race is smart enough to solve war, famine and poverty with science and
technology. As a testament to the worlds readiness for tolerance and peace, the global
community is more connected and integrated than ever before. Similarly, in the article
Imagine a Global Citizens Movement, another visionary constructs a plan for peace. Author
Paul Raskin stresses, an adequate response requires us to imagine the awakening of a new social
actor: a coordinated global citizens movement (GCM) struggling on all fronts toward a just and
sustainable planetary civilization (Raskin). Raskins plan reads like a blueprint ripe with
specifications and tolerances designed for a well-oiled machine. Like a well-oiled machine,
Raskins plan, in theory, can produce fine-tuned results. In a call for universal balance and equity,
Raskin insists that the preservation of a healthy climate, ecosystem and economy is essential
for a better world (Raskin). Raskin created an ergonomic approach to stability. He has a vision of
balancing nature and industry in a way that promotes food, shelter and economic prosperity for
all. While Saionji and Raskin have slightly different platforms, they both provide a plan to
achieve peace. To conclude, the Saionji family and Raskin prove that a string of thoughts can
create a global movement.
Currently, North Korea is in turmoil while world leaders play with politics and lives. In
the article UN Security Council Condemns North Korea, the powers-that-be do just that.
Author Brian Padden reports, U.N.S.C. has condemned North Korea for its [repeated]
submarine missile test[s] (Padden). Do sanctions really deter North Korea from missile

Garcia 3
projects? In short, no. How do sanctions affect the lives of the North Korean population?
According to Padden, new U.N. sanctions would create even more hardships for the North
Korean people because the sanctions would restrict access to much needed trade-goods (Padden).
To sum up the whole ordeal, the only result that condemnation and sanctions have accomplished
is heightened tensions between governments and a crippled North Korean economy. At the same
time, the article Missile Defense Talks Continue, highlights obstacles for the Korean
Peninsula. Jack Kim, author, points out that South Korea needs a means of defense against
missile attacks from North Korea, but China and Russia would feel threatened by the airdefensive measures (Kim). If Russia and China feel threatened by a self-defended South Korea,
then why have they not pledged to protect South Korea from missile attacks yet? I speculate that
Cold War grudges and outdated allegiances prevent such progress. The stalemate is bad for North
Korea and South Korea, but officials must continue to look for solutions. Nonetheless, Kim
reports, "the implementation will be a series of decisions that we take together and its for our
own protection against North Korea (Kim). Regardless of what Russia and China think, the U.S.
and its allies will continue to assist South Korea in these uncertain times. To summarize, the
United Nations is choking the North Korean economy because of a dictators nuclear missile
aspirations, but North Korean surrogates, China and Russia, interfere with South Korean airdefense. Without a doubt, world powers need another plan to end this madness.
Without question, the Korean Peninsulas peace-talks always fall short, but the civilians
remain optimistic about their future. To begin, while Korean peace-talks are, at this time,
hopeless, the Korean Peninsula has experienced positive change within recent months. In the
article Sanctions against North Korea are not working, Alexander Freund, author, reports, Top
U.N. Official, Marzuki Darusman: sanctionsif they take effectwill lead to a humanitarian

Garcia 4
conditionrequire the international community to step in again (Freund). I am confused
because the U.N. would prepare humanitarian aid for a famine they created. In essence, one U.N.
branch punches a defendant in the nose, and then sends the defendant to another U.N. branch to
get a bandage. In hindsight, the U.N. is upstanding because they still permit access to
humanitarian aid causes regardless of their own sanctions. During Freunds interview, Darusman
reveals that China is now allowing North Korean defectors to escape through Chinese borders
(Freund). From older world news, I know that China used to capture and return defectors to
North Korea. In my opinion, this recent turn of events is yet another beacon of hope for the
oppressed North Korean people. Meanwhile, in South Korea, a glimmer of hope illuminates how
a reunified Korea could work. In the article Women Cross DMZ to Make Peace, a brief
reunion between North Korean and South Korean women exemplifies what reconnecting can do
for a country. After countless hours of getting government permissions, author and DMZ activist,
Chung Hyun Kyung, calls for a reconstruction of the armistice between the two Koreas, and an
end to the silent Korean War (Kyung). Surprisingly, South Korean officials, under political
restraint, were reluctant to condone this peace movement, but North Korean Officials swiftly
granted the DMZ Movement access to North Korea. Marching on, Kyung and the other activists
were unwavering in their pursuit for peace. Revealing the human element of peaceful
resolutions, Kyung recalls, We prepared quiltsbrought them to the peace symposiumwe
took out our quilts and stitched them together as one big quilt. Then we sang the Our Wish is
Unification (Kyung). Much to my surprise, North and South Korea allowed the DMZ
Movement access across the 38th Parallel to share and experience history, tradition and affection
with one another. During these peace-talks, Kyung and the activists experienced a unified Korea

Garcia 5
for the first time. These scholars, survivors and global-citizens shared ideas, culture, history and,
ultimately, a preview of a unified people.
To conclude, the current political system protecting the Korean Peninsula is upside-down,
but there are Global Citizens bravely propping the system back up. What do Political Parties do
for society? Political Parties unify the voices of scattered like-minded individuals throughout
nations. Political parties also force change because that is the nature of politics. However,
political parties often disagree about dire issues while human lives perish. Furthermore, political
parties tend to overlook the well-being of their neighbors whenever their policies are at risk. To
this end, a true Global Citizen forsakes any divisive party mechanisms if lives are in danger.

In the essay Global Citizen: What is my Purpose, the author describes the political
situation in the Korean Peninsula. The student cites many sources to argue his point. This essay
is an English Composition Two assignment. The arguments and conclusions for the source-work
are weak. More follow-up sentences for each source is required to build a better rhetorical angle.
