SECTION A
This section carries 40 marks.
1.
A walker wears a pedometer. A pedometer is an
instrument that measures the distance walked by counting
the number of steps taken. The walker measures the
distance of one step as 0.8 metres, and enters it into the
pedometer. The walker completes 9000 steps during a walk.
a) Calculate the distance travelled.
[1]
______________________________________________________
b) The walker completes this walk in 80 minutes.
[1]
[1]
____________________________________________________________________
d) Give a reason why the distance measured by the pedometer may not be accurate.

SECTION B
This Section carries 45 marks.
6. (a) The diagram below shows a wave some distance from the beach. The time
between one crest and the next crest is 5 seconds.

or deeper from the surface.

7. (a) A single sound is made by hitting a metal plate with a small hammer as shown
below. The microphone is connected to a timer. The timer starts when the sound first
reaches the microphone and stops when the sound next reaches the microphone.
[1]
(ii) Why is this timing method much more accurate than using a stopwatch?
___________________________________________________________
[1]
(iii) Describe the path that the sound travels during this experiment.

[3]
[2]
(v) After performing the experiment the timer shows a reading of 0.009s. Use these
measurements to calculate the speed of sound.

(b) Ultrasonic pulses are emitted from the rear of the car. Objects behind the car reflect the
pulses, which are detected by sensors. Ultrasonic pulses travel at the speed of
sound. (330m/s)
(i) What are ultrasounds?
[1]
_______________________________________________________________________
(ii) If the time between these pulses being sent and received is 0.002s.
Calculate the distance between the object and the rear of the car.

(iii) At a certain distance, the buzzer beeps every 0.125 s. Calculate the frequency of the
beeps.

(ii) Mark clearly on the figure a possible position of an object OA, placed between the
principal focus and the lens.
