Modernfreestylewrestling,accordingtotheFILA,issaidto
haveoriginatedinGreatBritainandtheUnitedStatesbythe
nameof"catchascatchcan"wrestling.[1]"Catchascatchcan"
wrestlinghadaparticularfollowinginGreatBritainandthe
variantdevelopedinLancashirehadaparticulareffecton
freestylewrestling.[2]"Catchascatchcan"wrestlinggained
greatpopularityinfairsandfestivalsduringthe19thcentury.In
catchascatchcanwrestling,bothcontestantsstartedout
standingandthenawrestlersoughttoholdhisopponent's
shouldertotheground(knownasafall).Ifnofallwasscored,

achievedafall,thecontestantswouldcontinuebothstandingandonthegrounduntilafallwasmade.Irish
immigrantslaterbroughtthisstyleofwrestlingtotheUnitedStates,whereitsoonbecamewidespread,
especiallybecauseofthesuccessofthewrestlingchampionoftheArmyofthePotomac,GeorgeWilliam
FlaggfromVermont.[2]CatchascatchcanwasthestyleperformedbyatleastahalfdozenU.S.presidents,

BecauseofthewidespreadinterestinandesteemofprofessionalGrecoRomanwrestlinganditspopularity
inmanyinternationalmeetsinnineteenthcenturyEurope,freestylewrestling(andwrestlingasanamateur
sportingeneral)hadatoughtimegaininggroundonthecontinent.The1896OlympicGameshadonlyone
wrestlingbout,aheavyweightGrecoRomanmatch.[2]FreestylewrestlingfirstemergedasanOlympic
sportintheSaintLouisOlympicsof1904.All40wrestlerswhoparticipatedinthe1904Olympicswere
American.The1904Olympicssanctionedtherulescommonlyusedforcatchascatchcan,butimposed
somerestrictionsondangerousholds.Wrestlingbysevenweightclasses:47.6kg(104.9lb),52.2kg
(115.1lb),56.7kg(125.0lb),61.2kg(134.9lb),65.3kg(143.9lb),71.7kg(156.7lb),andgreaterthan
71.7kg(158lb)wasanimportantinnovationintheSummerOlympics.[1]
Since1921,theInternationalFederationofAssociatedWrestlingStyles(FILA),whichhasitsheadquarters
nearLausanne,Switzerland,hassetthe"RulesoftheGame",withregulationsforscoringandprocedures
thatgoverntournamentssuchastheWorldGamesandthecompetitionattheSummerOlympics.These
werelateradoptedbytheAmateurAthleticUnion(AAU)foritsfreestylematches.Freestylewrestling
gainedgreatpopularityintheUnitedStatesaftertheCivilWar.Bythe1880s,tournamentsdrewhundreds
ofwrestlers.Theriseofcities,increasedindustrialization,andtheclosingofthefrontierprovidedthe
affableenvironmentforamateurwrestling,alongwithboxing,toincreaseinesteemandpopularity.
Amateurwrestlingteamssoonemerged,suchasthewrestlingteamoftheNewYorkAthleticClub,which
haditsfirsttournamentin1878.Professionalwrestlingalsodeveloped,andbythe1870s,professional
championshipmatchesofferedallowancesofupto$1,000.[2]
Nineteenthcenturywrestlingmatcheswereparticularlylong,andespeciallyGrecoRomanbouts(where
holdsbelowthewaistandtheuseofthelegsarenotallowed)couldlastasmanyaseighttoninehours,and
eventhen,itwasonlydecidedbyadraw.[3]Inthe20thcentury,timelimitsweresetformatches.[4]For
morethanfortyyearsintothetwentiethcentury,freestyleanditsAmericancounterpart,collegiate
wrestling,didnothaveascoringsystemthatdecidedmatchesintheabsenceofafall.Theintroductionofa
pointsystembyOklahomaStateUniversitywrestlingcoachArtGriffiththatgainedacceptancein1941
influencedtheinternationalstylesaswell.Bythe1960sinternationalwrestlingmatchesinGrecoRoman
andfreestylewerescoredbyapanelofthreejudgesinsecret,whomadethefinaldecisionbyraising
coloredpaddlesatthematch'send.Dr.AlbertdeFerrarifromSanFranciscowhobecamevicepresidentof
FILA,lobbiedforavisiblescoringsystemandarulefor"controlledfall",whichwouldrecognizeafall
onlywhentheoffensivewrestlerhaddonesomethingtocauseit.Theseweresoonadoptedinternationally
inGrecoRomanandfreestyle.[5]By1996,beforeamajoroverhaulofFILArules,aninternationalfreestyle
matchconsistedoftwothreeminuteperiods,withaoneminuterestbetweenperiods.[4]Today,wrestlers
fromPostSovietstates,Iran,U.S.A.,Bulgaria,Cuba,Turkey,andJapan,havehadthestrongestshowings.
AlexanderMedvedofBelaruswon10worldchampionshipsandthreeOlympicgoldmedals,intheperiod
of19641972.[6]Manycollegiatewrestlershavemovedontofreestylecompetition,particularly
internationallywithgreatsuccess.[7]
Inthespringof2013,theInternationalOlympicCommittee(IOC)votedwrestlingoutofthecoresportsfor
thesummerOlympicsbeginningin2020[8]Asaresultofthisnewsthewrestlingcommunitystarteda
massivecampaigninordertoreinstatethesport.Alargelyonlinegroupcalled2020visionleadthe
movement.TheyhadseveralcampaignsaswellasFacebookandTwitterpagesthatspreadawarenessand
gatheredsupportforthecauseofwrestling'sreturntotheOlympics.Theyhadamissionofgaining
2,000,020signatures(onlineandoffline)insupportofwrestling'sreturntotheOlympicGames.[9]In
September2013theIOCvotedtoallowwrestlingbackintotheOlympicsfor2020and2024asa

Atypicalinternationalwrestlingtournamenttakesplacebydirecteliminationwithanidealnumberof
wrestlers(4,8,16,32,64,etc.)ineachweightclassandagecategorycompetingforplacement.The
competitionineachweightclasstakesplaceinoneday.[16]Thedaybeforethewrestlinginascheduled
weightclassandagecategorytakesplace,alltheapplicablewrestlersareexaminedbyaphysicianand
weighedin.Eachwrestlerafterbeingweighedonthescalethendrawsatokenrandomlythatgivesacertain

Ifanidealnumberisnotreachedtobegineliminationrounds,aqualificationroundwilltakeplaceto
eliminatetheexcessnumberofwrestlers.Forexample,22wrestlersmayweighinovertheidealnumberof
16wrestlers.Thesixwrestlerswhodrewthehighestnumbersafter16andthesixwrestlerswhodrewthe
sixnumbersimmediatelybefore17wouldthenwrestleinsixmatchesinthequalificationround.The
winnersofthosematcheswouldthengoontotheeliminationround.[18]
Intheeliminationroundor"bloodround",theidealnumberofwrestlersthenpairoffandcompetein
matchesuntiltwovictorsemergewhowillcompeteinthefinalsforfirstandsecondplace.Allofthe
wrestlerswholosttothetwofinaliststhenhavethechancetowrestleinarepechageround.Therepechage
roundbeginswiththewrestlerswholosttothetwofinalistsatthelowestlevelofcompetitioninthe
eliminationround.Thematchesarepairedoffbythewrestlerswholosttoonefinalistandthewrestlers
wholosttotheother.Thetwowrestlerswhowinaftereverylevelofcompetitionarethevictorsofthe
repechageround.[19]
Inthefinals,thetwovictorsoftheeliminationroundcompeteforfirstandsecondplace.[20]
Inallroundsofthetournament,thewrestlerscompeteinmatchespairedoffintheorderofthenumbers
theydrewaftertheweighin.[21]
Afterthefinalsmatch,theawardsceremonywilltakeplace.Thefirstplaceandsecondplacewrestlerswill
receiveagoldandsilvermedal,respectively.(AttheFILAWorldChampionships,thefirstplacewrestler
willreceivetheWorldChampionshipBelt.)Thetworepechageroundwinnerswilleachbeawardedthird
placewithabronzemedal.Thetwowrestlerswholostinthefinalsforthethirdplaceareawardedfifth
place.Fromseventhplacedown,thewrestlersarerankedaccordingtotheclassificationpointsearnedfor

Thematchtakesplaceonathickrubbermatthatisshockabsorbingtoensuresafety.FortheOlympic
Games,allWorldChampionships,andWorldCups,themathastobenew.Themainwrestlingareahasa
ninemeterdiameterandissurroundedbya1.5metre(4.9ft)borderofthesamethicknessknownasthe
protectionarea.Insidetheninemeterindiametercircleisaredbandofonemeter(3ft3in)inwidththat
isontheouteredgeofthecircleandisknownastheredzone.Theredzoneisusedtohelpindicate
passivityonthepartofawrestlerthus,itisalsoknownasthepassivityzone.Insidetheredzoneisthe
centralwrestlingareawhichissevenmeters7metres(23ft0in)indiameter.Inthemiddleofthecentral

Equipment
Asingletisaonepiecewrestlinggarmentmadeofspandexthatshouldprovideatightand
comfortablefitforthewrestler.Itismadefromnylonorlycraandpreventsanopponentfromusing
anythingonthewrestlerasleverage.Onewrestlerusuallycompetesinaredsingletandtheotherina
bluesinglet.[24]
Aspecialpairofshoesiswornbythewrestlertoincreasehismobilityandflexibility.Wrestling
shoesarelightandflexibleinordertoprovidemaximumcomfortandmovement.Usuallymadewith
rubbersoles,theyhelpgivethewrestler'sfeetabettergriponthemat.[25]
Ahandkerchief,alsocalledabloodrag,iscarriedinthesinglet.Intheeventofbleeding,the
wrestlerwillremovetheclothfromhissingletandattempttostopthebleedingorcleanupanybodily
fluidsthatmayhavegottenontothemat.[24]
Headgear,equipmentwornaroundtheearstoprotectthewrestler,isoptionalinfreestyle.Headgear
isomittedattheparticipant'sownrisk,asthereisthepotentialtodevelopcauliflowerear.[25]
TheMatch
Amatchisacompetitionbetweentwoindividualwrestlersofthesameweightclass.Infreestylewrestling,
ajury(orteam)ofthreeofficials(referees)isused.Therefereecontrolstheactioninthecenter,blowing
thewhistletostartandstoptheaction,andsupervisesthescoringofholdsandinfractions.Thejudgesitsat
thesideofthemat,keepsscore,andoccasionallygiveshisapprovalwhenneededbytherefereeforvarious
decisions.Thematchairmansitsatthescoringtable,keepstime,isresponsiblefordeclaringtechnical
superiority,andsupervisestheworkoftherefereeandjudge.Tocallafall,twoofthethreeofficialsmust
agree(usually,therefereeandeitherthejudgeorthematchairman).[26]
SessionFormat
InGrecoRomanandfreestyle,theformatistwothreeminutesessions.Beforeeachmatch,eachwrestler's
nameiscalled,andthewrestlertakeshisplaceatthecornerofthematassignedtohiscolor.Thereferee
thencallsbothofthemtohissideatthecenterofthemat,shakeshandswiththem,inspectstheirapparel,
andchecksforanyperspiration,oilyorgreasysubstances,andanyotherinfractions.Thetwowrestlersthen
greeteachother,shakehands,andtherefereeblowshiswhistletostartthesession.[27]
Awrestlerwinsthematchwhenhehasoutscoredhisopponentattheendofthetwothreeminutesessions.
Forexample,ifonecompetitorweretoscorefourpointsinthefirstsessionandhisopponenttwo,andthen
twointhesecondsession,hisopponentzero,thecompetitorwouldwin.Onlyafall,injurydefault,or

disqualificationterminatesthematchallothermodesofvictoryresult
onlyinsessiontermination.[27]
Infreestyle,ifnowrestlerscoresintwominutes,therefereeofthe
matchwillthenidentifythemorepassivewrestler,andthatwrestler
willbegivenathirtysecondwindowofopportunitytoscore,andifhe
doesn't,thenhisopponentwillbeawardedapoint.[28]
Thefreestylewrestlerintheblue
Whenthesession(ormatch)hasconcluded,therefereestandsatthe
singletscorespointsoverthe
centerofthematfacingtheofficials'table.Bothwrestlersthen
wrestlerintheredsinglettowin
approacheachother,shakehands,andstandoneithersideofthe
bydecision.

raisingthewinner'shand.Attheendofthematch,eachwrestlerthen
shakeshandswiththerefereeandreturnstoshakehandswithhisopponent'scoach.[29]
Matchscoring
Infreestylewrestling,aswellasinGrecoRomanwrestling,pointsareawardedmostlyonthebasisof
explosiveactionandrisk.Forexample,whenonewrestlerperformsagrandamplitudethrowthatbringshis
opponentintothedangerposition,heisawardedthegreatestnumberofpointsthatcanbescoredinone
instance.Also,awrestlerwhotakestherisktobrieflyrollonthemat(withhisshouldersincontactwiththe
mat)couldgiveacertainnumberofpointstohisopponent.Scoringcanbeaccomplishedinthefollowing
ways:
Takedown(1to5points):Awrestlerisawardedpointsforatakedownwhenthewrestlergains
controloverhisopponentonthematfromaneutralposition(whenthewrestlerisonhisfeet).At
leastthreepointsofcontacthavetobecontrolledonthemat(e.g.twoarmsandonekneetwoknees
andonearmortheheadortwoarmsandthehead).[27]
(5points):5pointsareawardedforatakedownbroughtaboutbyathrowofgrandamplitude(a
throwinwhichawrestlerbringshisopponentoffofthematandcontrolshimsothathisfeet
godirectlyabovehishead)eitherfromthestandingorparterrepositionintoadirectand
immediatedangerposition.[30]
(3points):Generally,threepointsareawardedforatakedownbroughtaboutbyashort
amplitudethrowthatdoesnotbringhisopponentinadirectandimmediatedangerpositionor
foratakedowninwhichawrestler'sopponentistakenfromhisfeetorhisstomachtohisback
orside(athrowofshortamplitude)sothatheisinthedangerposition.[30]
(1point):onepointisawardedforatakedownbroughtaboutbyawrestlertakinghisopponent
fromhisfeettohisstomachorsidesuchthathisbackorshouldersarenotexposedtothemat
andwhileinthispositionholdinghimdownwithcontrol.[31]
Reversal(1point):Awrestlerisawardedonepointforareversalwhenthewrestlergainscontrol
overhisopponentfromadefensiveposition(whenthewrestlerisbeingcontrolledbyhis
opponent).[31]
ExposurealsocalledtheDangerPosition(2or3points):Awrestlerisawardedpointsforexposure
whenthewrestlerexposeshisopponent'sbacktothematforseveralseconds.Pointsforexposureare
alsoawardedifone'sbackistothematbutthewrestlerisnotpinned.Criteriaforexposureorthe

WinbyFall:Theobjectoftheentirewrestlingmatchistoattainvictorybywhatisknownasthe
fall.Afall,alsoknownasapin,occurswhenonewrestlerholdsbothofhisopponents'shoulderson
thematsimultaneously.InGrecoRomanandfreestylewrestling,thetwoshouldersofthedefensive
wrestlermustbeheldlongenoughfortherefereeto"observethetotalcontrolofthefall"(usually
rangingfromonehalfsecondtoaboutoneortwoseconds).Theneitherthejudgeorthemat
chairmanconcurswiththerefereethatafallismade.(Iftherefereedoesnotindicateafall,andthe
fallisvalid,thejudgeandthematchairmancanconcurtogetherandannouncethefall.)Afallends

Inaninternationalwrestlingtournament,teamsenterone
wrestlerateachweightclassandscorepointsbasedonthe
individualperformances.Forexample,ifawrestleratthe60kg
weightclassfinishesinfirstplace,thenhisteamwillreceive10
points.Ifheweretofinishintenthplace,thentheteamwould
onlyreceiveone.Attheendofthetournament,eachteam'sscore
istallied,andtheteamwiththemostpointswinstheteam
competition.[42]
TeamCompetition
Ateamcompetitionordualmeetisameetingbetween(typicallytwo)teamsinwhichindividualwrestlers
atagivenweightclasscompeteagainsteachother.Ateamreceivesonepointforeachvictoryinaweight
classregardlessoftheoutcome.Theteamthatscoresthemostpointsattheendofthematcheswinsthe
teamcompetition.Iftherearetwosetsofcompetitionswithoneteamwinningthehomecompetitionand
onewinningtheawaycompetition,athirdcompetitionmaytakeplacetodeterminethewinnerforranking
purposes,ortherankingmaytakeplacebyassessinginorder:1)themostvictoriesbyaddingthepointsof
thetwomatches2)themostpointsbyfall,default,forfeit,ordisqualification3)themostmatcheswonby
technicalsuperiority4)themostperiodswonbytechnicalsuperiority5)themosttechnicalpointswonin
allthecompetition6)theleasttechnicalpointswoninallthecompetition.Thisworkssimilarlywhenmore
