Best wishes for the new year
Our industry is going through constant technological change. We should be delighted
about this, since this change is a sign that the printing industry has a role to play in the
progress of society and that printed products have strengths to offer even in an altered
media world.
It sometimes seems to us that it is more natural for this progress to be reflected in
investment in new machines and equipment than in the training of staff. However, it
is important to remember that the best set of kit can only be as good as the men and
women who operate it.

About 800 businesses from the

field of printing and their ancillary industries are members of

The new version of ProcessStandard Offset developed by Fogra working with the federations is a case in point. It is designed to take advances in measurement technology and
standard illumination into account, especially when it comes to dealing with optical
brighteners. Of course, the standards new requirements should be borne in mind when
purchasing new lighting and measurement equipment but what is more important for a
successful implementation is that the employees engaged in the printing process should
have the necessary know-how. Fogras seminars on this subject, which are booked out
many times over, testify to this. We recommend that
you book now for the courses in question next year in
order to avoid being caught in the bottleneck.

You will receive a 30 %

discount on almost all Fogra
products and service, including the purchase of control
materials and test devices, as
well as any expert opinions you
commission.

Naturally, Fogra offers a whole host of other seminars

that are of practical relevance and, importantly, besides the pre-planned course programme, we will also organize tailor-made seminars and undertake consultancy work
for your company at any time.
We would like to take the opportunity of this New Year issue to warmly thank all our
donors and those who give their time to us. We would also like to thank our members
for their years of loyalty. Please do not hesitate to call on our extensive experience and
we look forward to continuing to work together successfully in the future.
We wish you a restful festive season and every personal and professional success next

Packaging Printing 2015

The 4th Fogra packaging symposium on all aspects of folding box printing was
organized and convened at the end of October. The aim of the symposium was
to inform the audience about new technical and regulatory developments and
to help the branch increase a positive self-image.
From the head of the symposium Dr Uwe Bertholdt.

Packaging has good prospects

cost awareness, smaller and more diverse print runs and short-term campaigning are further factors added by
the package buyers.
In Germany, paperboard consumption is
still on the rise and nowadays half of
the production volume of the paper industry is converted into packaging. New
designs and outstanding experimental
models demonstrate the high qualitative

In addition various packaging aspects
have not been used for marketing aspects so far. The second presentation

There is an ongoing development process concerning the requirements for

food packaging. A current update on
the status of the diverse legislations in
Germany and Europe were given. A German ink regulation is expected for 2019
which will probably also affect Europe
and other parts of the world. A positive
list will contain substances to be used in
inks for food packaging. At least in Germany more frequent toxicological tests
on food packaging are to be expected in
future.

The outlook for package printing is still

bright, although various requirements
such as easy opening, good resealing,
recyclability, improved product identification, integration of electronics, and
regulatory aspects steadily increase the
complexity of the products. Packages
should attract the customers attention
and promote impulse buying. Improved

Concerning the presence of mineral oils

in food and food packaging, a batch
analysis may be considered by packaging producers to meet the requirements
of a possible new mineral oil legislation
in Germany. The current analytic methods of detecting mineral oils are, how
ever, both complex and error-prone.
Fogra and FABES have developed an
analytic method for the industry which
is at least more simple.
Problems with mineral oils in folding
boxes produced from recycled fibres may
be addressed by using functional barriers. These foils need to be characterized
by migration, permeation and penetration time tests. Corresponding methods
were developed by the Fraunhofer institute.

Competition in the packaging industry

The market power of packaging print
buyers nowadays results in fierce competition between partners of the industry even if they all behave rationally.
Customized strategies, tailor-made innovations for end consumers and the
establishment of distinctive product features are possible ways of breaking this
deadlock.

fully introduced into decoration printing

and is now also available for folding box
production. Image differences for colour coordinates may be used to derive
a similarity index for areas of interest.
Huber inks reported on good experiences
in fully digital colour communication.
Once the processes and data bases are
established, problems with out-of-date
or different colour references are overcome.

Flexo printing gains more and more impact in the board packaging market although lithography still has an overall
higher print quality. Tetra Pak reported
on a project to bridge the gap between
both printing processes.

Materials, machinery and processes

Actega Terra expects the future of varnishing to be digital and inkjet even
though the current digital presses still
use conventional varnishing units.

Xeikon presented its folding box solution including 5 colours, varnish and
dye cutting.
Actual process schemas in post-press
converting and print finishing were critically reviewed and it was recommended
using more inline solutions keeping as
much flexibility as possible.
Energy consumption was shown to be a
profitable area of optimization. Standby
modes and illumination alone can offer
50 % cost savings according to Fogras
experiences.

It starts with two days ICC

Meeting, held at the Sddeutsche Zeitung, close to
the Fogra Institute.
Based on Fogra initiative, the International
Color Consortium was established in 1993
by eight industry vendors for the purpose
of creating, promoting and encouraging the standardization and evolution of
an open, vendor-neutral, cross-platform
color management system architecture
and components. The outcome of this cooperation was the development of the ICC
profile specification.

Please contact Dr K

The specification of metallic effects by

means of multi-angle colour measurements as being used in the automotive
industry has so far not been realistic for
the folding boxes industry. The reason
for this is the lack of measurement in the
effect (mirror) angle, which was identified to be crucial during visual comparisons. Fogra therefore does not recommend specifying metallic effects in print
by current multi angle devices.
The symposium successfully provided
inspiration for its audience involved in
issues around technical as well as marketing aspects.

Wednesday,
17th of February the members
of Fogras Digital
Printing Working Group (DPWG) come together for its 12th meeting. The meeting
will be hosted this time by Mimaki.
P lease find the agenda at the Fogra webpage: www.fogra.org/DPWG/
The task of the DPWG is to establish a
group of vendors and users active in the
digital printing arena for the purpose of
creating, promoting and encouraging the
standardization and evolution of vendor
neutral digital printing.
Subsequently, Fogra invites to the fifth Colour
Management Symposium, held on 18th/19th
February at the Holiday Inn Munich City

Spot and MultiColor

Workflows
- Challenges for Commercial, Industrial and
Packaging Applications
The area of multicolor and the professional handling of spot colors has a growing
demand in the job and packaging printing. Terms like Expanded Gamut Printing,
Fixed Color Palette, and Extended Color
Process Printing are used everywhere.
Take the opportunity and learn during this
interesting session about the opportunities and challenges when implementing a multicolor workflow. See how spot
colors may be defined independent from
manufacturers and what kind of savings
are possible by working in production
with more than four process colors.
During the session Spot and MultiColor
Workflows - Challenges for Commercial,
Industrial and Package Applications starting on February 18th at 2pm you will
have the opportunity to listen to industry
experts and professional users, presented by Dietmar Fuchs, Product Manager
of the color management expert team at
