The Ultimate Guitar Teaching System

For Beginners

By Rick Ruggieri

Introduction
I

have designed this unique method of teaching guitar by my integrated

Three book guide for each level of study as outlined.
.

The Ultimate Guitar System (Beginners Level)

Book 1)

Basic Study Section

A personally pictured, well explained and demonstrated study section

teaching basic rudiments, playing in both the plectrum and classical finger
styles. All of the exercises are naturally appealing rhythms and melodies of
recognizable songs. This study section is intended to be used
simultaneously
with the next two books included in the beginners level as follows:

Book 2)

Style Section

A section to introduce you to a variety of musical styles from rock to

classical presented in an elementary degree of basic study which you have
already acquired in the first section. Associated techniques and rhythms
are demonstrated for each style of music to develop your versatility.

Book 3)

Repertoire of Music Section

A section of a variety of music including over 100 songs from around the
world, separated into groups of specific styles, music from various
countries, and for special occasions building a well rounded repertoire of
music.

The Guitars used in this book

The guitars pictured in the book are family treasures. Included is

a 1938 Gretch acoustic which belonged to my grandfather. The circa
1940 birch blonde f hole arched top was my mothers which she
played.
My grandfather and my father bought me the 1959 Fender
Jazzmaster which I played professionally for years until in 1973
when stolen from my car. I loved that guitar and went through many
others trying to replace it. Twenty Three years later while visiting a
town in upstate New York I discovered it in a guitar shop. After
examining the details with matching serial number. (The law in
forced the statue of time limitations so I had to purchase the guitar
again, and at a stiff price! At least I had found my lost treasure. The
Lorenzo Pimentel Classical cutaway was custom made in
Alberquerque, New Mexico in 1968, with solid Brazilian rosewood is
very rare. The Gianinni Craviola was purchased from Brazil in the
early 70s. The natural blonde ES-175 was from the mid 70s. And
finally the Ibanez GB-10 was purchased in the late 70s. I love all of
these guitars, they have been with me for a long time and have
become like part of me, representing the versatile styles which I love
to play.

Beginning a song with an Incomplete Measure

Lets say a song has a time signature of ( 4/4 ), that means there are 4
beats to a measure and the first measure contains only one beat. This is
called an Incomplete Measure.. To play the song, start by silently
counting off the missing 3 beats and start playing on beat 4 ( also called
the pick up note ). Continue playing the song and you will find the
remaining three beats in the last measure . These three beats combined
with the single beat of the first incomplete measure will then add up to 4
beats making a complete measure.

Chords are a combination of notes placed one above the other on

orchestration used in rhythm to accompany the melody.

The chords are played in certain patterns

called Progressions..

A Visit From The Relatives

Each major key signature has a relative minor. It is built on the 6th
note of the scale of that key. Therefore in the key of C, the the 6th
note in the scale is A, so A minor would be the relative minor. It
shares the same scale as C, starting on A and ascend 8 notes in
order of the alphabet and end onA, 1 octave higher in pitch.
The A natural or ( Pure ) scale

The A Minor Chord

Orchestration style chords

Orchestration chords are expressed by a diagonal line ( / ),
indicating the 1st written chord of a measure be repeated - (each
diagonal symbol representing 1 beat of the civen measure).
The following rhythm exercise pattern of harmony is called a
chord progression

This progression is played in many songs you will soon learn.

B. You may accompany your melody for solo performance by adding

the alternating bass line to create rhythm.
The alternate bass note is he 1st and 5th note of any scale, therefore:
The alternate bass notes for the following chords are:
(Am = A and E)

(Dm = D and A)

(E7 = E and B)

(Demonstrated In Style section, Classical)

4) The Slide is made by playing a note then sliding the fretted

finger
up or down the fret board to achieve a rise or lowering of pitch.
