Model maker
A professional craftsperson who creates 3D representations of a
design/concept. Some model makers use tools such as: manual
lathes, manual mills, CNC machines, lasers, wire EDM, water jet
saws etc. A model maker designs and creates 3D models/mock
ups. In animation the model makers will make multiple models of
the characters e.g. model makers in Aardman make multiple
copies of Wallace and Gromit characters.
The model maker would also create different parts of the set like
the object as well as characters e.g. trees or tables etc. In the
Wallace and Gromit films the car is created by model makers as
well as the houses and tress etc.
The entry requirements for a model maker are: model making
skills, a portfolio that demonstrates you have an eye for detail and
can produce quality models to a very exact standard.
The training needed includes art, design and technology,
It/computer skills and the ability to understand technical drawings
which will help with building accurate models to the correct
specifications.
