When dieting side by side, men appear to shed pounds easier and more quickly than women do, But is that really the case? LTCI can help families finance ‘the cost of medical care when all other options wall not. Just steer clear of extra condiments that only increase those already considerable sodium levels. Ifyou must opt for fast food, do not order sides of fries or chips, which will only make meals less healthy. Also, avoid sugary sodas. Many fast food restaurants offer some healthy fare, such as grilled chicken sandwiches. Order such sandwiches plain or with extra lettuce and tomato for a healthy crunch. Order sandwiches on whole-wheat buns when possible. Kids’ meals tend to have healthy portion sizes. If possible, purchase a kid’s meal and opt for a side of sliced apples or another healthy alternative. * Make smart choices at sit-down restaurants, too. It’s important to stay focused on healthy fare even when you pull off the highway and patronize more traditional sit-down restaurants. Again, think smaller portions. Consider splitting an entrée with another person in your traveling party. Some chains will offer the nutritional information right on the menu, or put a special symbol next to their healthiest offerings. Substitute steamed vegetables for starchy or fattening side dishes and always ask for sauces to be served on the side. It’s not always easy to eat healthy when traveling. The phone app, which is available for free from the Apple AppStore and the Google Play store, provides doctors with several different tools to help them treat patients who may be reaching the end of their life. Burke Hospice & Palliative Care (BHPC) developed the app in partnership with BrandGarden of Huntersville, NC. The phone app includes educational materials to help physicians feel more comfortable with hospice care, including a information about how to have the hospice care conversation with a patient or family and links to articles about the benefits of hospice and palliative care. “Hospice can be a very difficult conversation to have,” said Aaron Housh, BHPC President & CEO."We have this conversation on a daily basis. We're hoping the information available on the phone app will help other medical professionals introduce hospice to their patients and families.” Finally, the app offers a “Refer A Patient” button that allows the physician or other medical professional the convenience of referring a patient at the bedside. With just a couple taps on their phone, physicians can start the referral process. “One of the things we've talked about is whether or not we need to do a similar phone app for the general public.” Housh said, “It would be a little different in nature, more education: Housh said the current app could help people get into hospice sooner, which could improve the end of their life. Even though Medicare allows a prognosis of six months, Housh said, “the average length of stay nationwide is around 2 months and the median is less than 20 days. While many people find adapting toa healthier diet challenging, that challenge often pales in ‘comparison to the intimidation felt when working out for the first time in years Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape. ‘Overcoming that intimidation factor can be as simple as working out with a friend or working with a personal trainer, each of whom can offer the support and guidance beginners need when reacclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. In addition to the buddy system, beginners can employ the following strategies to make their return to exercise go as smoothly as possible. * Gradually build up your exercise tolerance. When you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be addictive, but it’s important that beginners do not go too hard too quickly when beginning a new exercise regimen. Gradually build up your exercise tolerance, exercising two or three days per week and taking a day off between workouts when you start. As your body. becomes more acclimated to exercise, you can start to workout more and with more intensity. ® Stretch after working out. Stretching can improve flexibility, and that may decrease your risk of future injury. In addition, improved flexibility may improve your exercise performance by improving your range of motion and helping your muscles work more effectively. Muscles contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those muscles to their natural position. Include both static stretching and foam rolling in your post-workout stretching routine. * Find a routine that works for you. Many men and women feel they must sign up for a gym membership upon resolving to adopt a more active lifestyle. While gyms afford you the ‘opportunity to strength train and get in your cardiovascular exercise, they're not for everyone. The best approach and the one that’s likely to be most successful over the long haul is to find an exercise routine that engages you and that you find enjoyable. f the gym is not for you, try to find a routine that still includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Strength training can make your body more durable, and cardiovascular exercise can reduce your risk for various health problems, including heart disease. 12| Hickory = Morganton m@ Marion SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH 22>): «Track your progress. The longer you stay committed to your workout routine, the greater the likelihood that you will be tracking more successes than failures, and those successes can provide the motivation to keep you going on those inevitable days when you want to skip workouts. Human beings are meant to be in community, and those special people whom we entrust with our love, our fears, our dreams, and our selves grant us a sense of belonging, security, and permanence. They also help us define ourselves in relation to them. When a person whom we connect to so strongly is wrenched away from us, we're compelled to re-evaluate our visions of the future and forced to reconsider who ‘we are on every front. The grief associated with such a blow provokes the strongest degree of change that we will encounter, and it's a process that demands our participation in body, mind, and spirit. [es all-consuming work. Perhaps the most important grace you can allow yourself while grieving is freedom from immediate expectations. You will almost certainly get well-meaning advice and well- intended words of comfort from others. Appreciate them, but know that they will not necessarily be your experience. Each person's response to loss is individual and unexpected. Permit yourself to experience what you feel - whether it's anger, numbness, withdrawal, distraction, restlessness, or denial — and be prepared for a journey that may include mood swings, make you question your stability, or bring temporary changes to your health and habits. Along with letting yourself grieve, make sure that you take care of your physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs to the best of your ability. Exercise, eat well, and get plenty of sleep. Engage with family and friends at least occasionally so that you aren't isolated with your feelings. Treat yourself to those things that give you pleasure, and trust that your loved one would want you to enjoy yourself in his or her absence. Although it’s inevitable that your being and your planned- for future will change, don't push yourself to create a new life immediately. Let things unfold, and understand that you don't have to donate clothing, sell vehicles, or clean out basements right away. You will have a sense of readiness when its time to act. Until then, let be. In the meantime, talking about your feelings with a counselor or trusted friend may be therapeutic. The CDC says 17.6 million Americans were diagnosed with hay fever, in the past 12 months. Allergic rhinitis is a common condition that creates symptoms similar to a cold, Unlike a cold, which is caused by a virus, allergic rhinitis is an allergic response to any number of triggers. Usually hay fever can be brought on by any number of allergens and sometimes it can be difficult to narrow down the exact cause. However, here are some of the more common allergens. Pollen: Of all things that can cause an allergy, those resulting from pollen tend to be the most prolific. Pollen can be released from trees, grasses, weeds, and flowers throughout much of the year: While the main goal of pollen is to fertilize other plants, pollen that is inhaled can cause allergic reactions. It’s one of the more difficult allergens to avoid since pollen is virtually everywhere. Dust: Dust is an accumulation of microscopic particles that become trapped in a home.A large portion of dust is comprised of dust mites. WebMD says about 20 million Americans are allergic to dust mites and their waste. Dust mites feed on skin from pets and humans. They tend to spike in numbers during warmer weather or if indoor temperatures are kept at 75 F or higher: Cleaning using a HEPA filter vacuum can keep dust at a minimum. Air purifiers also may be able to help. Animal dander: Millions of pet owners have an allergy to their animals, says AAAA\. It’s not the fur of the animal that causes the trouble, but usually proteins found in a pet's shed skin, saliva and urine that can cause problems. Keep in mind that there are no truly hypoallergenic breeds, and length of hair or fur will not eliminate allergies. An allergist may be able to suggest a course of treatment. Mold: Tiny fungi with spores that float through the air, mold is yet another common allergen. The most. common allergy-causing molds include Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Penicillium. Preventing, the environment needed for mold to grow can reduce allergic reactions. This primarily means airing cout homes to keep them dry. Allergies can occur all year long and be bothersome. Working with an allergist and avoiding the most common triggers can help people feel more comfortable. 1999-2016 er North Carolina Funeral Directors Association VOTED Burke County’s Best Funeral Home in 2015! 828. 874, 0411 | 1507 East Main Street | Valdese iy EBRAT h Our promise to you: “We will strive to provide the absolute best facilities, price and personal attention that you and your family deserve. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. ® Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex dental issues. « Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. It’s a useful description for an area of health care that is typically hard to pin down, namely because it varies according to what each patient needs. ‘\ Who will make the etc iva of our community a priority every single day? If a tumor is affecting, ‘organs internally, the goal is for relief from discomfort. Palliative medicine is not a traveling pain clinic, though. The nurse practitioners (NPs) regularly see patients and have conversations about hopes and anticipations relative to the illness. The NPs provide guidance about disease progression and help folks understand what to expect. NPs also emphasize the importance of making early decisions about the types of care a patient might choose (or not choose) in the long-term. NPs also evaluate all of a patient’s medications, often streamlining the mix a patient takes or adjusting dosages for better responsiveness. In most cases, NPs consult with the patient's primary care physician and arrive at solutions together. This collaboration is beneficial to continuity of care; however, the palliative medicine NP has two advantages that a PCP typically doesn't First, she often visits the patient at home, gathering information, evaluating the surroundings, and treating the patient in a familiar environment. Secondly, the NP sees patients for longer visits. Along the way, she monitors symptoms and outcomes while consulting with the doctor. This frequency and attentiveness comprise the extra layer of care that’s key to palliative medicine's success. Among the additional services palliative medicine may offer are referrals for occupational or physical therapy, plus home health if necessary. NPs can also acquire items like hospital beds, wheelchairs, and oxygen tanks. All of these components contribute to a holistic care scenario, addressing the patient's complete health picture rather than dealing with small, individual needs. This total picture also embraces a practical perspective on disease progression. Many patients are seniors who crave details, so the NPs give them realistic expectations about their illnesses and talk with them about life expectancy. Armed with knowledge and a sense of what's to come, the patients gain a heightened sense of control, even in the midst of illness.
