Mycoreteachingprinciplesarestudentresponsibility,humanity,andloveofknowledge.
ThroughoutthispaperIwillexplainwhateachmeansandhowitwillmanifestitselfinmy
teaching.
Studentsmustberesponsibleinordertoenhancetheirownknowledgeandunderstanding
oftheconceptstaughtinmyclass.Thereisonlysomuchthatcanbetaughtwithinallottedclass
time.Alladditionalassignmentswillbeessentialtounderstandingtheconceptsandapplication
ofknowledgeintheclassroom.Studentsmustcompletetheseassignmentsinatimelymannerto
ensuretheykeepupwiththeclass,andunderstandwhatisgoingon.Studentswillberequiredto
readselectionsfromthebookVocalTechnique,AguideforConductors,Teachers,andSingers1
togivenecessaryinformationaboutbreathing,theonsetofsound,andvocalhealth.Students
willbeaskedtousethisinformationonadailybasisduringsinging,andwillbegradedonhow
effectivelytheyexecutetheseconceptsduringsingingassessments.
Eachstudentisanessentialpartoftheclass,andisresponsibleforattendingclassand
concerts.Concertsshowcasewhattheclasshasaccomplishedasawhole,andstudentsreceivea
gradeforcompletingthisassessment.Studentsareresponsibleforplanningaheadtomakesure
theycanbeatallperformances,orconsultwiththeadultsinvolvedshouldaconflictarise.Since
performanceandpracticehavedifferentexpectationsandgoals,apracticewillnotbeconsidered
aperformanceinlieuofaconcertabsence.
Failureisapartoflearning,andstudentsmusttakeresponsibilityfortheirfailuresinorder
tolearnfromthem.Studentswilluseconcertreflectionstoassesswhetherornottheirprocess

improve.Admittinganyfailureswillbeanimportantpartofthisreflection.Studentwill
identifythemistakeandstatewhattheyhavelearnedfromit.
Assessmentsarerequiredforstudentstoreceivenecessaryknowledgeontheirprogress.
Singingassessmentsaremeanttoshowstudentswheretheyhaveimproved,andwheretheyneed
morepractice.Studentsareresponsibleforpracticingoutsideofclassinordertomakegreat
improvements.SmartMusicwillbeusedtoshowstudentstheirpitchandrhythmicaccuracy
afterthreetofourweeksoflearningasong.Studentwillusethatknowledgetopractice,and
taketheassessmentagainbeforeaconcert.Gradeswillbebasedonhowmuchthestudenthas
improved.Othergradingcriteriawillbeappliedtothesameassessmenttogivefeedbackon
otheraspectsoftheperformancesuchasphrasing,dynamics,breathingtechnique,vowelshapes,
andposture.Sightsingingwillalsobeapartofthesingingassessments.Studentswillhave
timetolookatamelodywithharmoniccontext,andbeassessedonhowwelltheyperformthe
example.Advancedlevelstudentswillcomeupwiththeharmoniccontextandhearitinternally
whileperformingthesightsingingexample.

Allstudentsmustdisplayasenseofhumanityinordertocreatethekindoflearning
communitythatallowsstudentstolearnfromfailuresandcelebrateinsuccesses.Certain
elementsoftrust,empathy,andrespectarerequiredforanemotionallysafeenvironment.

Studentsneedtotrusttheteachertoonlyassignadditionalworkwhenitisnecessarytothe
studentsunderstandingoftheconceptstaughtwithinthecourse.Itrustthatstudentswill
completetheirworkbecausetheyaretrulyinterestedinbecomingbettermusicians.Knowledge
ofnotenamesisabsolutelynecessarytobefluentinthemusicallanguage.Studentswillhave
levelsoftheMusicManapplicationandNoteWorksapplicationtopracticenotenamingand
pianoreadingskills.
Asstatedearlier,failureisapartoflearning.Studentsmustbekindandrespectful
towardeachothersothateachstudentfeelscomfortablefailinginfrontoftheirclassmates.In
thearticleDispellingtheMythoftheNonSinger:EmbracingTwoAestheticsforSinging,2
LouiseM.Pascalestatesthatmostpeopledeemedthemselvesasnonsingersbecausethey
werenotselectedtosingsolos,couldnotleadsongs,couldnotreadmusic,orsangoutoftune
(Pascale167).Hadthesesubjectsbeenallowedtofailandlearnfromtheirmistakes,ratherthan
stopping,perhapstheywouldconsiderthemselvessingers.
Theattitudeapersonbringsintoaclassroomisentirelyuptothem.Apersoncanchoose
tofocusonbeinginclass,ratherthaneventsthathavetranspiredoutsideofit.Allmembersof
theteam,includingthedirector,needtochoosetocometoclasswithapositive,patient,
proactive,collaborative,understandingattitude.
Singingisaskill,andZoltanKodalybelieveseveryonehastheabilitytolearntosing
(Choksy82).Skillstaketimetodevelop,andsomestudentsmaydevelopfasterthanothers.

havemastered.Theimportanceoflearningtoimagineandaccessasinglepitchcannotbe
overemphasized,(Klonoski6).Itwilltaketimetomakesureallstudentsarecapableofdoing
this,whichwillrequirealotofpatienceforeveryoneintheclass.Advancedstudentsshouldbe
understandingandtakeaproactiveapproachtotheirownlearningbyworkingonhearingthese
pitchesindifferentregistersusingdifferentcarrierstohelpdevelopskillsneededforcritical
listening.
Allstudentsmustunderstandthattheclassisaunit.Inanensemblesetting,whatisgood
forthegroupismoreimportantthanthewantofanyparticularindividual.Keepinga
collaborativemindsetwillhelpavoidconflictandnegativefeelingstowardoneanother.
Choosingvoicepartscanbecomecompetitivewheneveryonewantstosingthemelody.
However,whatismelodywithoutharmoniccontext?(Klonoski).Studentsneedtobeflexible
andsingwhatevervoicepartfitsbest.Voicepartsareassignedbasedonfactssuchasrange,
timbre,breathsupport,strengthofearforhearingharmoniccontext,andabilitytoblendina
certainrange.

Studentsmusthavealoveofknowledge.Ifastudenthasnodesiretolearn,thenno
amountoftime,inspiredteaching,orpersistencewillmakeadifference.Studentsmustcometo
classreadytotakeanyandallinformationtheycantoimprovetheirsingingandmusicianship.
Allactivitiescangivestudentsinsightandadditionalunderstandingabouttheirvoice,aboutthe
music,andaboutthelearningprocess.Anactivitythatisfocusedonimprovisationmayhave

severalstudentssingingtheharmonicprogressionasafoundationfortheimprovisation.Initially
astudentmaynotseehowthatcanhelpthem,butthiswillhelpthemhearhowthenotesofthe
improvisedmelodyfitwiththenotetheyaresinging.Thiscanleadtotheunderstandingofhow
themelodyfitsintothechordasawhole,andhowonevoicewithinachordmovesthroughouta
harmonicprogression(Klonoski).
Studentshouldaskforhelpfromtheirteacherandtheirpeers.Oneofthegreatwaysto
knowifyoutrulyunderstandsomethingisbyhavingtoexplainittosomeoneelse.Being
comfortableaskingforhelp,andbeingkind,respectful,andpatientwhilegivinghelparealso
greatwaystocreatetheconnectionsforanemotionallysafeclassroom.
Differentgenresandculturalmusiccanteachusalotaboutthemusicandabout
ourselvesasmusicians.Teachersandstudentsmustlooktoexpandtheirrepertoirebywanting
tolearnmusicoutsideofthegenrewithwhichtheyaremostfamiliar.Classicalchoralmusic
helpsteachagilityandharmonicfunction,Baroquemusichelpsteachstudentstobeconfidentin
theirpartbecauseeachpartisequallyimportant.Ethnicmusicteachesstudentsaboutdifferent
metricaldivisionsandperformancemethods,andBroadwaystylesteachstudentstoexpandand
mixtheirvocalranges.Studentsmustwanttolearntousetheirvoicesinamultitudeofwaysin
ordertohavethecontrolrequiredtosingtheirbest.Studentswillbeaskedtoexplorewhatitis
theylikeabouteachpieceinthesedifferentstyles,howtheyaredifferent,andalsodescribethe
mostdifficultpartoflearningeachpiece.Thisreflectionwillhelpthemappreciateeachstyleof
music,whilealsoidentifyingcharacteristicsspecifictoeachgenre.
