Learning Management Plan

Year 2 History Changes over time

8 X 1 hour lessons
1. What does the
learner already
know?

2. Where does
the learner
need / want to
be?

Students may have some understanding of how

technology has had an impact over the years however
most will have little knowledge of historical aspects in
relation to transport, communication, clothing, toys
and machines in the home.
By the end of this unit students will have an
understanding of how people in the past lived and how
our way of life today differs from those in the past.
They will use inquiry based learning to explore
historical concepts Pose questions about past and

present objects, people, places and events

(ACHASSI034)

3. How does my
learner best
learn?

4. What
resources do I
have?

5. What will
constitute the
learning
journey?

6. Who will do
what?

The impact of changing technology on peoples lives

(at home and in the ways they worked, travelled,
communicated, and played in the past) (ACHHK046)
Learners will be involved in a range of activities
including hands on experiments to assist in their
engagement and learning experience. A guest speaker
will come and speak to the students to give them a
greater insight in to how their grandparents and great
grandparents may have lived.

Lesson 5 Clothes Discussion and pics of clothes
worn in the past and why
Lesson 6 Schooling - in the past
Lesson 7 Tales of times past Guest speakers
Lesson 8 Machines in the home Make butter and
fairy bread
I will teach the topic under the supervision of the
mentor teacher.

7. How will I
check to see
that the
learner has
achieved the
outcomes
8. How will I
inform the
learner and
others about
the learners
progress?

Formative assessment during reflection. Students will

be asked questions to gauge their understanding.
Anecdotal notes will be taken to record results.
Summative assignment at the conclusion of the unit

Teacher will receive a report of each individuals

progress that she can use in her reports at the end of
term to inform parents.

Have a group discussion about the different forms of transport and
how they have changed over the years. Have students give ideas
about what they know of transport in the past.

Main Content:
Teacher will have an excel file that is shown on the interactive
board. The figures will be added as taken and then a graphical
representation made.
Students will be asked what form of transport they used in the
morning to get to school.
Student will then do a think pair share about how they believe

Teaching

bar graph
students are
being exposed to
a graphical
representation of
their answers to

students used to get to school in the past when their grandparents

went to school.
Discussion will be held as to the reasons for these modes of
transport.

Show a PPP on the then and now of a bicycle, ship, train, car,
aeroplane. Students will give their ideas about the good and bad of
each mode of transport.
They will be given the pics and asked to stick them in their history
books on a T Chart.

Draw simple conclusions based on discussions,

observations and information displayed in pictures
and texts and on maps (ACHASSI041)

transport will look like when they are 50 years old. Eg a car of the
future that can go under water or fly.

Students need to bring in a toy from home and ask their parents if
they have any old toys they can bring in to display.

of what they
will be learning
about and the
reasons why.

WILF To identify three different ways that toys have changed over
time as a result of technology.
TIB - By learning about the past we can see how technology has
changed our daily lives.
Show students the timeline of toys video stopping at certain points
to discuss the toys and whether they have played with them.
timeline of toys

Main Content:
Students will be asked to look at toys that they have brought in from
home including their own and any that were their parents.
Discuss the materials that the toys are made from and the
characteristics of the toys.
If there are not many toys use the youtube clip and look at the toys in
it.

Teaching
Approaches
By bringing a
toy from home
students are
engaged in
the learning.

Major points to talk about:

Use power or batteries
Use of plastic compared to wood and natural materials
Indoor versus outdoor games
Safety aspects such as helmets, kneepads
Cost of toys
Toys Timeline
Read about the history of the following toys
Frisbee, First electronic game, Teady bear, Plastic hula hoop,
Skateboard and Monopoly from (Australian Curriculum, 2013, p. 51)
Model the timeline. Have a sample showing on the whiteboard.
Students will draw a timeline in their books.
They will draw a picture of the above mentioned toys in the correct
date order and write something about the toy.
Early finishers can draw a toy of the future that they would like.

Reflection Students will return to the mat to discuss the

differences in toys and how they have changed. Do they think
that toys today are better and why?

Review and

today.

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time

Introduction

Teaching Approaches

WALT We are playing games that were played in

the past.
WILF Two reason why these games are different to
what we play today.
TIB Many games have lasted centuries and are still
fun today.
Explain to students that some games have not
changed very much and that some companies will
reintroduce games to make a profit.

Main Content:

Teaching Approaches

Students will be divided into five groups. They will

rotate between five different activities of 10 minutes
each to do with an old fashioned game or toy

Students are interactive and

engaged in the learning.

Instructions for each activity will be written on games

sheets that are to be left at each activity.

Explain each activity and game sheet and let students

know that they will be working independently a lot.
The activities include:

Time

Making a ball in the cup game or Making a

spinning top
Skipping with a long rope
Four square / hand ball
Frisbee with tin plates and Frisbees
Bowling with plastic bottles

Conclusion:

Teaching Approaches

Reflection Students will return to the mat to reflect.

They will form two circles one inside one outside
facing each other. They will tell the other person what
game they liked the most and why. Then the outer
circle will move two places clockwise and students will
share with someone new.

Review and reflect

Resources
Need to organise all the equipment needed including cups, ping pong balls, string,

the students do a think pair share.
Communication is sharing information.

Think pair share helps

students to formulate their
ideas and gives them more
confidence to share in front of
their peers

Main Content:

Teaching Approaches

Firstly I will begin by asking for 8 volunteers to do

some acting. They will role play the 1st, 2nd and 4th
communication systems scenarios as per (Australian
Curriculum, 2013, p. 63)

Students are interactive and

engaged in the learning.

While these students are practicing and learning their

roles in the wet area the other students will be given
the post card writing activity from (Lawless &
Cameron, 2015) BLM 18
Role model the post card writing activity and give
some suggestions as what could be written. Students
will draw up a page in their books to look like a
postcard.
Have students return to the floor leaving an area at
the front for the performers.

This will need students

undertaking the postcard
activity to work almost
independently as I assist
the role play performers.

Make sure students are

highly praised for their
efforts in volunteering and
getting up in front of the
class.

Role play 1.
Role play 2.

Role play 4
Who has heard of Morse Code? Morse code is a
system where people communicated using a series of
dots and dashes. Each letter of the alphabet had a
specific sequence.

Now you are going to write a morse code message to

a friend. Use (Lawless & Cameron, 2015) BLM 19
Choose a partner to write to. Write a message and
then swap and decipher the message.
(Have one between two of morse code masters made
up. The messages can be written in their partners
work books.

Time

Main Content (Continued)

Teaching Approaches

For early finishers They can use the iPads to write

an email to Mr Gorton about why they like using
iPads.

This is relevant to the

students and they like the
idea that the principal will
read about their ideas and
thoughts

Conclusion: Reflection

Teaching Approaches

Recap the different types of communication that we

have looked at.
How do you think we will communicate in the future?
Do you think we will eventually be teleported?

History Achievement Standard

By the end of Year 2, students describe a person, site and/or event of
significance in the local community. They identify how and why the lives of
people have changed over time while others have remained the same.
Students sequence events in order, using a range of terms related to time.
They pose questions about the past and use sources provided to answer
these questions and to identify a point of view. They compare objects from
the past and present. Students develop a narrative about the past using a
range of texts.
