Intro/ Description of Problem

About 208,000 Americans under age 20 have been diagnosed

with diabetes

In total, 9.3% of American population have diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes is a condition caused by the body not

producing enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels

Previously attempted solutions/ current

limitations

The most common treatment is daily injections of

artificial insulin
Using an insulin pump to detect blood sugar levels
Injections are a nuisance in daily life
People could forget daily injection, be in danger
Treatments are often painful and expensive
A developing solution for diabetes that scientists are
researching is the genetic engineering of cells in the
pancreas to produce insulin at a normal level

Proposed solution

Our solution is an automatic insulin patch hooked up to

an insulin level detector and electromagnet
Patch has many tiny needles, only needs to be applied
once
When need for more insulin detected, electromagnet
activated, pushing polarized insulin in the patch out
into the bloodstream
Inconspicuous, automatic

Proposed solution - Production

We will use bioreactors to generate the insulin

Insulin will then be combined with protein that senses

magnetism (MagR/MAR)to make them affected by the
electromagnet

Proposed solution - Characterization (making

sure the insulin is actually insulin)

We would use purified adult Leydig cells (they have both

high and low affinity binding sites for insulin)

We can add the product, and then test both sites for
insulin to prove the product being produced is really
insulin

Proposed solution - Testing

We will use a homogenous assay to monitor the activity of

insulin receptors in a fake model
Assay: analysis of a drug) to determine the presence,
absence, or quantity of one or more components
We would then apply the patch and see if the assay
detects insulin in the insulin receptors
If it does, it means the insulin entered the bloodstream
as expected
