Reflective Analysis of Classroom Observation

23/3/2016
As this was the second week of practical experiences, I noticed
that the students in the class are in a routine. Each Wednesday
they know that first up is literacy groups, then handwriting and
the sentence of the day. The whole first session of the day is
taken up by English and the rest of the day is filled with maths
and other subjects depending on what they can fit in and
what is relevant. I think it is good to get the students in a
routine so they know what is happening next and are ready for
the next lesson. It is also especially good for younger students
as it provides more structure.

This week the class was reading the book Amelia Ellicots
Garden and doing preposition worksheets relating to the book.
I noticed that each time the book was read, my supervising
teacher asked the students a few questions about the book
before she began. Questions such as who has done some
gardening before or Who remembers what pets Amelia has?
get the students thinking about the book while also relating the
book to their own lives before they have even begun reading. I
think this is a good technique when reading to students in any
stage as it allows them to think about the book, its setting and
the characters as well as gets their attention.

This week I went on a Thursday and the students had a
computer lesson. As they are only in year 1, their computer
skills are limited. One way my supervising teacher sped up the
logging on process was printing out everyones username and
password, laminating them and handing them out at the
beginning of the lesson. This really helped the students get
onto the work they were actually doing on the computers faster
and they were all very proud of how fast they could log on now.
