Power & Energy Physical Significance & Relation

Though sometimes used by the people interchangeably they are not the same
thing, Instead they have a particular relation. You can understand the relation with
the below simple analogy

Energy is like money & Power is just the rate of spending

that money.
So energy is just like what you have got & the Power is the Mood of yours or the
Speed or Time with which you want to use that.

Electrical Energy Metering

In electrical Energy Metering system Power is the rating of your load while energy is
consumed during running it for a time.
Power (P) = Energy (E) / Time (s)
So Simply,
Energy = Power . Time
Generally Power is calculated in Watts while time can be in seconds, minutes or
hours depending on the running time of load.
So we see that
Energy = Watt . Hour
While bigger units are used for Electrical Energy Metering purpose like Kilo watt
hour or KWh in short.

Thus you can pretty easily calculate your household electrical energy consumption
on your own for e.g.
Your Load
2 Hundred Watt Bulbs = 100 * 2 = 200W
1 Fridge = 180W

3 Fan = 60 * 3 = 180W
Thus your total load is = 200 + 180 + 180 = 560 W
Lets suppose you run the above all day & night then time = 24 Hours
Now your Total electrical Energy Consumption is = Power * Time = 560 * 24 =
13440 Wh = 13.44 KWh
Now if cost of 1 Unit of Energy is = 6 Rupees, then your per day expenditure of
running that load
= 13.44 KWh * 6 = 80.64 Rupees.
