Abstract:

Purpose
Thepurposeofthispaperistoinvestigateenterpriseresourceplanning( ERP )systemsdevelopmentand
emergingpracticesinthe management ofenterprises(i.e.partsofcompaniesworkingwithpartsofother
companiestodeliveracomplexproductand/orservice)andidentifyanyapparentcorrelations.Suitablea
prioricontingencyframeworksarethenusedandextendedtoexplainapparentcorrelations.Discussionis
giventoprovideguidanceforresearchersandpractitionerstodeliverbetterstrategic,structuraland
operationalcompetitiveadvantagethroughthisapproachcoinedhereastheenterprizationof operations .

TheoreticalinductionusesanewempiricallongitudinalcasestudyfromZoomlion(aChinese
manufacturingcompany)builtusinganadaptedformoftemplateanalysistoproduceanewcontingency
framework.
Findings
Threemaintypesofenterprisesandthethreemaintypesof ERP systemsaredefinedandcorrelations
betweenthemareexplained.Tworelevantaprioriframeworksareusedtoinductanewcontingencymodel
tosupporttheenterprizationof operations knownasthedynamicenterprisereferencegridfor ERP (DERG
ERP ).
Researchlimitations/implications
Thefindingsarebasedononelongitudinalcasestudy.Furthercasestudiesarecurrentlybeingconducted
intheUKandChina.
Practicalimplications
Thenewcontingencymodel,theDERG ERP ,servesasaguidefor ERP vendors,informationsystems
managementandoperations managershopingtogrowandsustaintheircompetitiveadvantagewithrespect
toeffectiveenterprisestrategy,enterprisestructureand ERP systems.
Originality/value
Thisresearchexplainshow ERP systemsandtheeffective management ofenterprisesshoulddevelopin
ordertosustaincompetitiveadvantagewithrespecttoenterprisestrategy,enterprisestructureand ERP
systemsuse.
