2 Application Overview

Application Overview

Huawei launches eLTE2.2 DBS3900 LTE TDD (referred to as DBS3900 in this document),
which is an enterprise-oriented LTE product integrating wireless platform resources and
diverse technologies.
Based on Huawei advanced SingleRAN platform, the DBS3900 consists of two types of basic
function modules: baseband unit (BBU) (referred to as the BBU3900 in this document) and
remote radio unit (RRU). The BBU3900 is characterized by its small floor area, easy
installation, and low power consumption. Therefore, the BBU3900 can be easily installed in
the same place as an existing site. The RRU is compact and light. It can be installed near an
antenna to reduce feeder loss and improve system coverage.
Flexible combinations of the basic modules and auxiliary devices provide diverse site
solutions, which can meet customers' requirements for fast network construction.

3 Product Configurations

Product Configurations

3.1 Hardware Configurations

The eLTE2.2 DBS3900 consists of a BBU3900 and RRUs including the RRU3232 (4T4R),
RRU3251 (2T2R), and RRU3252 (4T4R).
The BBU3900 mainly consists of the following boards:

Universal main processing and transmission unit (UMPT): UMPTa6 and UMPTb2

LTE baseband process unit (LBBP): LBBPd2 and LBBPd4

The UMPTb2, UMPTa6, and LBBPd2 or LBBPd4 boards are inserted in the BBU box. When
the DBS3900 is deployed outdoors, the BBU3900 is installed in an outdoor power cabinet
APM30H. When the DBS3900 is deployed indoors, the BBU3900 can be installed in any
standard cabinet or rack that is 19-inch wide and 2-U high.
All the RRUs can be installed on walls or poles. They are delivered with mounting kits.
The DBS3900 supports a maximum of 18 cells. (In this version, a maximum of 12 sectors in
the single-carrier scenario and a maximum of six sectors in the dual-carrier scenario are
supported. In multi-RRU co-cell scenario, one LBBP board supports a maximum of three
logical cells operating at a 5 MHz bandwidth.) The DBS3900 supports the configuration of
one cell, three cells, or six cells operating at a scalable bandwidth of 5 MHz, 10 MHz, 15
MHz, and 20 MHz or at a hybrid bandwidth. In the dual-carrier scenario, if two frequency
bands are configured, the DBS3900 supports only the dual-band + dual-carrier configuration
but not the dual-band + dual-carrier per band configuration. In the single-band + single-carrier
configuration, the RRU3232 or RRU3252 supports the 2T2R configuration and the maximum
S222222 configuration. In the dual-carrier scenario, the DBS3900 also supports the
configuration of one cell, three cells, or six cells operating at a scalable bandwidth of 5 MHz,
10 MHz, 15 MHz, and 20 MHz. For details about the bandwidth specifications of each RRU
module, see Table 3-1. An LBBP board supports only hybrid bandwidth configuration but not
hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration.
All macro RRUs (including the RRU3232, RRU3252, and RRU3251) can be installed on
walls or poles. They are delivered with mounting kits.

3 Product Configurations

3.1.1 UMPT Selection Principles

In eLTE2.2 and later versions, the UMPTb2 is preferred and the UMPTa6 is optional.
The configuration principles of UMPT boards for the capacity expansion of existing sites
are as follows:

If the onsite version is upgraded to eLTE2.2 or later, and new sites are deployed for
capacity expansion, the UMPTb2 is preferred.

If the onsite version is not upgraded to eLTE2.2 or later, the UMPTa6 is preferred.

The maximum number of users supported by a single BBU in the DBS3900 is as

follows:

UMPT: A single DBS3900 serves a maximum of 10,800 RRC connected users.

3.1.2 LBBP Selection Principles

The LBBP selection principles are as follows:

Configuring four LBBP boards for a single BBU causes risks. If this configuration is
required, contact Huawei R&D engineers to evaluate the risks before the configuration.

In common scenarios, the LBBPd2 is delivered. In the multi-RRU co-cell scenario, the
LBBPd4 is delivered.

In eLTE2.2 or later, the same LBBPd2 supports the combination of different bandwidths.
The capability of supporting the combination of different bandwidths is not affected by
the number of carriers supported by the RRUs. For details about the number of cells
supported by each LBBP board type, see Table 3-2.

In eLTE2.2, the LBBPd2 supports the 15 MHz bandwidth.

3.1.3 RRU Selection Policies

RRU3232/RRU325X Specifications and Type Selection Principles

The RRU3251 is preferred for the 2T2R networking with the 2.3 GHz band.

The RRU3252 is preferred for the 4T4R networking with the 2.3 GHz or 2.5/2.6 GHz
band. The RRU3252 is also preferred for the 2T2R networking with the 2.5/2.6 GHz
band.

The AC RRU3252 is optional only when the band is 2.3 GHz. Manual quotation
supports the mixed configuration of AC RRU3252 and DC RRU3252 modules, whereas
the configurator does not.

4T4R RRUs include the RRU3252 and RRU3232. An RRU can function as two 2T2R
RRUs.

RRU3232/RRU325X Capacity Expansion Configuration Principles

The configuration algorithm calculates the number of increased base RRUs based on the
number of installed base RRUs that can be reused regardless of whether the RRU board
type is changed. If installed base RRUs will not be reused in certain circumstances,
contact Huawei R&D engineers.

Capacity expansion supports the mixed configuration of 2.3 GHz AC RRU3252 modules
and 2.3 GHz DC RRU3252 modules. If the power supply will be changed after capacity
expansion, only increased base RRUs are delivered, and installed base RRUs on the live
network will not be replaced.

The configurator does not support the mixed configuration of different types of
intra-frequency RRUs. RRUs with different power supplies are also regarded as different
types of RRUs. (You can manually configure such RRUs if the mixed configuration is
required.)

RRU3232/RRU3252 Inter-Band Configuration Principles

The RRU inter-band configuration is supported only in eLTE2.2 or later and when the
LBBPd2 is used.

A single RRU supports a maximum of two carriers and a single BBU supports a
maximum of 18 cells.

RRUs of different frequency bands can be connected to the same LBBP board, and the
maximum number of cells supported by the LBBP board remains unchanged. Currently
the LBBPd4 does not support the RRU inter-band configuration.

Cells served by the same LBBP board must all be 2T2R cells or 4T4R cells (including
cells served by RRUs on different bands and RRUs on the same band). The number of
TX and RX channels supported by each LBBP board can be different in the same BBU.
However, the number of TX and RX channels supported by each of the two carriers must
be the same in the same RRU.

The enabling or disabling of CPRI compression must be consistent for all RRUs
connected to the same LBBP board. The RRU3232 does not support CPRI compression.

eLTE2.2 DBS3900 LTE TDD Configuration Principles

3 Product Configurations

The license for CPRI compression must be centrally configured for the different carriers
of the same RRU. If the CPRI compression feature is selected, the algorithm of the
configurator calculates the number of RRU optical modules and the number of CPRI
compression licenses based on the assumption that CPRI compression is enabled for all
RRUs supporting CPRI compression.

The bandwidths of carriers for the same LBBP board can be different.

3.1.4 Networking Reference Configurations

The minimum number of LBBP boards is used in the following reference configurations,
which is not affected by the throughput of a single cell or LBBP board.

Reference Configurations for Common 2T2R Networking

One 4T4R RRU3232/RRU3252 can function as two 2T2R RRUs. The remote electrical
tilt (RET) feature is not allowed on an RRU that functions as two RRUs.

The RRU3251 does not support a 5 MHz network.

Only 1.8 GHz RRU3232 modules are supported in the multi-RRU co-cell scenario.
The number of licenses for the cell combination feature is equal to the number (before cell
combination) of cells involved in cell combination. The sales unit is per cell.

Check Relationships Between Site Types, Common Cells, and Logical Cells
The check relationships are as follows in the multi-RRU co-cell scenario:

The configuration principles of LBBP boards are as follows:

2T2R
Number of LBBP boards = max (Rounded Up [Number of logical cells/3.0],
Rounded Up [Number of physical cells/6.0])

4T4R
Number of LBBP boards = Rounded Up (Number of physical cells/3.0)

For details about the check relationships between the number of physical cells, number
of cells involved in cell combination, and number of logical cells, see the following
attachment:

Co-Cell Check
Rules.xls

The cell combination of 5 MHz RRUs is described as follows:

Multi-RRU co-cell does not support inter-LBBP combination, which means that cell
combination can be performed only for RRUs connected to the same LBBP board.

Cell combination depends only on joint scheduling but not PDSCH and PUSCH space
division multiple access (SDMA).

One LBBPd4 board supports a maximum of three logical cells and the combination of
six 2T2R RRUs or three 4T4R RRUs.

Multi-RRU cells and normal cells can be served by the same LBBP board.

Cell combination supports hot ring or cascading. However, hot ring supports only the
star topology but not cascading of RRUs.

Normal cells support cold ring, hot ring, or cascading (the RRU3232 supports the
maximum two-level cascading). However, hot ring supports only the star topology but
not cascading of RRUs.

3 Product Configurations

Hot ring requires that the distance difference for the two optical fibers on the same RRU be less than 200
200 m, which means that the delay difference must be less than 4 Tc.

One 4T4R RRU can serve two combined 2T2R cells. The combination of RRU
neighboring cells refers the combination of cells served by different RRUs.
