Summary/ Reflection 4
Computers in the Curriculum
5/5/16

The article discussed how digital production can promote twenty-first

century literacy. Students demonstrate digital communication outside of the
classroom by social media, texting, and tweeting. The author indicates how
literacy can be taught also by implementing the skills that students already
know using information and communication technologies. The author talks
about how an 8th-grade teacher provides his rural students the opportunity to
create multimedia character analysis. His students explore the one in 8
million project. This online multimedia project consisted of biological
soundslides. The students were to observe, listen, and to write down
anything that stood out to them and to compare and contrast the stories that
were told. Students were also told to pay attention to the characters. They
were instructed to fill out a character analysis worksheet. Throughout this
project, students were able to evaluate, elaborate, and explore the different
opportunities that were part of this project.
The author listed a couple of challenges. These challenges included the
accessibility to technology, the teaching and learning production literacy and
skills, and the perseverance of students. Overall, the students reflection
learned and developed communication skills, creativity, critical thinking

skills, and technology skills. One point I thought was note-worthy was the
fact that this teacher was able to do this from a rural standpoint. With the
limited equipment and knowledge, this teacher was still able to make a
difference.
I think this 8th-grade teachers idea was effective and demonstrated
that learning literacy through technological devices can be possible whether
what equipment we are limited too. I have had little knowledge of how this
could be possible. Being given this information will allow me to be able to
incorporate learning the skills of literacy and technology into the classroom.
One way of doing this is by having my students download an application
where heart rates can be taken and practicing taking it on each other. This
application will allow students to learn the information of heart rates by
reading and listening to videos that come with the application. Overall, I
believe literacy is important to education and by using the tools of
technology can help students learn efficiently.
