IVE GOT MY LIFE BACK

Kids camp boss cleared of child cruelty charge
FORMER SUMMER camp boss Tal
Landsman has pledged to rebuild
his life after being found not
guilty of child cruelty, writes Marc
Shoffman.
Landsman, of Admiral Drive, Stevenage, had been accused of failing to
report indecent images of very
young children discovered on the
mobile phone of co-defendant and LL
Camps co-owner Ben Lewis, but was
found not guilty by jurors at St Albans
Crown court in less than an hour.
He has revealed how the case had
weighed on his whole family and now
they are seeking to return to normality.
The 26-year-old told Jewish News:
I have found tremendous support
from a number of rabbis, educators
and other leaders within the community who have been there with guidance and encouragement throughout

this difficult time.

This case has been incredibly
tough for my whole family. We've all
felt that we've had to more or less put
our whole lives on hold for the past 10
months.
Lewis entered a guilty plea and is
due to be sentenced, but that left
much of the focus of the trial on
Landsman.
It took a jury less than an hour to
clear him of any wrongdoing.
Landsman said he was appalled at
what he learned in relation to Lewis,
adding: I provided a clear and consistent account of my actions during
the relevant period upon request by
the police and this was borne out in
the evidence adduced by the prosecution. I believe the unanimous verdict of the jury, in less than an hour,
speaks volumes as regards the allegation against me.

But he was unhappy with some of

the ways the media reported the story.
He said: These past months have
taught me a lot about the media and
how events and situations can be portrayed.
The media attention the case received was difficult to deal with, but
my family and I have been lucky to
have a fantastic level of support that
has helped us through this incredibly
painful time.
I feel that certain members of the
press have pursued headlines with little regard or concern for the content
of their articles and the affect such
poorly researched articles can have on
public perception.
LL Camps was opened by the pair
in 2010 and had become a popular
summer camp for kids. But it lost its
Ofsted licence last August when the
allegations against Lewis first

emerged, destroying plans to open

an LL primary school.
Landsman said he was still proud
of his achievements but now
needed time to reflect on what
had happened.
He said: I loved the school application process and was rightfully
very proud of my achievements,
however now I need time to consider and reflect on what has just
happened and the ramifications of
the past almost ten months.
My girlfriend, my family and I
want to move forward and return to
normality. Professionally I am looking
for the right position towards which I
will be able to put all the incredible
experience that I have gained
and built up over the past
seven years while
running my own
business.

ISRAEL ACCUSED

Corbyn criticism
JEREMY CORBYN has criticised Jewish commentator
Jonathan Freedland for an
article of disgusting subliminal nastiness after the
Guardian writer said Labour
had a problem with antiSemitism under his leadership.
In a Vice News documentary, Corbyn tells Labour head
of strategy Seamus Milne, another former Guardian journalist: He (Freedland) is not a
good guy. He seems kind of
obsessed with me.
Freedland wrote of Corbyn:
Many Jews worry that his
past instinct, when faced with
potential allies whom he
deemed sound on Palestine,
was to overlook whatever
nastiness they might have uttered about Jews.

Netanyahu case
A FORMER employee of Benjamin Netanyahus wife has
won a court case against her
alleging mistreatment, according to reports.
The verdict is a new setback
for Sara Netanyahu, who has
been repeatedly accused of
abusive behaviour towards
household staff.
Reports in Israel said
Jerusalems labour court
awarded Guy Eliyahu $30,000
in damages after he claimed
Mrs Netanyahu had behaved
abusively.
Police reportedly recommended indicting Mrs Netanyahu for allegedly misusing
state funds and excessive
household spending.

A BRITISH ACADEMICS union has accused Israel of accessing UK campuses

for state propaganda ahead of its annual Congress, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.
The allegation, made in a report from
the Congress Business Committee (CBC),
of the University and College Union
(UCU), forms the agenda for meetings of the unions conferences
being held in Liverpool this week.
In Motion 9, called Palestine,
UCU policy and Israels propaganda offensive, Congress notes
the drive by Israel to access UK
campuses for state propaganda
via faux debates with selected
critics.
The CBC makes additional accusations of escalating legal
threats and diplomatic pressure to
intimidate Israels critics, claiming UCU itself was subjected to these
after votes in 2010 and 2011.
It also notes the counter-radicalisation to prevent campus criticism of Israel
and boycott of complicit institutions
and the orchestrated conflation of antiZionism with anti-Semitism.
The report also reveals that the unions
general secretary stepped in to remove
a motion to support for an academic
and cultural boycott of Israel after legal
advice found that this was unlawful.
UCU Congress has previously passed
similar motions, which were later declared void and of no effect for the
same reason. Israels supporters in the
UK said the unions own legal advice was

A Board of Deputies spokesperson
said: That the UCU persists in its obsession with motions to boycott Israel in the
face of its own legal advice that it would
be unlawful to implement such motions
tells you all you need to know.
The union is no stranger to the Jewish
community. It fought and ultimately won
an employment tribunal claim from
Fraser, who alleged harassment based on
the unions pro-Palestinian stance. Fraser
cited UCU as an environment of thickening toxicity.

FORMER ISRAELI ambassador Daniel

Taub is to take a break from the foreign ministry to join a leading philanthropic foundation.
The veteran diplomats 25 years in
the ministry has included a spell as
principal deputy legal adviser and
playing a role in negotiations with
the Palestinians and Syria.
He had previously been tipped for
the chief legal counsel role in the
ministry after returning to Jerusalem
from London last year.
But it was announced this week he
will take up a role with Yad Hanadiv
as director of strategy and planning.
The organisation, which acts on behalf of Rothschild family philanthropic
trusts, currently focuses its grant
making on education, academic excellence and the Arab community.
It emerged this year Taub was subjected to an internal ministry probe
over unauthorised visitors to his London residence, which concluded there
had been no criminal or disciplinary
wrongdoing and the issue related to
a breach of security protocol.
Congratulating him on his appointment, the ministry said: Daniel is an
outstanding diplomat and lawyer and
we hope to see him playing further
roles in Israeli diplomacy in future.
The ministry said allegations against
Taub in the past had been thoroughly investigated and dismissed.
Yad Hanadivs website says it is
dedicated to creating resources for
advancing Israel as a healthy, vibrant,
democratic society, committed to
Jewish values and equal opportunity
for the benefit of all inhabitants, carrying forward the philanthropic tradition of the Rothschild family.

Its unprecedented, said union member Ronnie Fraser of Academic Friends of

trade union has said that it cannot support the academic and cultural boycott
elements of the Boycott, Divestment and

A PROMINENT signatory of
Jews for Justice for Palestinians
has resigned from the organisation, accusing it of being
more part of the problem than
part of the solution to antiSemitism on the British left.
Academic David Hirsh demanded his name be removed
from the supporters list after
condemning the organisations
response to the recent scandal
surrounding the Labour Party
and claimed it had become
wholly hostile to Zionists.
The organisations statement
says peace between Israel and
the Palestinians requires the

all civilians and is unacceptable.

tinians. The problem is that

more and more, those who
speak in the name of the signatories of the statement have
moved away from the values
and politics of the statement.
In particular I object to recent efforts made in the name
of JFJFP signatories to portray
the crisis of anti-Semitism in
the Labour Party as something
which is invented by the Jewish
community in bad faith in order
to smear the left and in order
to silence criticism of Israel. I
do not agree with this analysis.
I believe there is a problem of
anti-Semitism on the left and I
believe that JFJFP is more part
of this problem than it is part of
the solution.
He added: Anti-Semitism
hurts Jews and this is a good
reason for Jews to be vigilant
against it. It also discredits,
mis-educates and corrupts the

left. And it undermines the purpose of JFJFP.

His decision comes after signatories were approached to
make submissions to Labours
inquiry into anti-Semitism. The
organisation was told it would
be contributing to preserve
the right to criticise Israel
and/or Zionism, without being
accused of anti-Semitism.
The group also called for
supporters to oppose the role
endorsed by the Jewish Labour
Movement an explicitly Zionist organisation to provide
training about Jew hatred.
Following a report into allegations of intimidation at the
Oxford University Labour Club
last month, the Free Speech on
Israel website features a statement that accuses JLM of being
one of the Zionist organisations responsible for the false
allegations.

31 countries adopt broad

definition of anti-Semitism
THE INTERNATIONAL Holocaust Remembrance Alliance comprising 31
member nations this week adopted
a broader working definition of
anti-Semitism, saying it needs political tools to fight the scourge.
The inter-governmental organisation, adopted the European definition after in-depth discussion
during plenary meetings in Bucharest
last week.
The EUMC working definition is
used increasingly by European law
enforcement officers because it gives
examples of the kind of behaviour
which may constitute anti-Semitism,
including references to Israel.
Sir Eric Pickles, UK envoy for postHolocaust issues and head of the UK
delegation to the IHRA, said: Im
delighted We can [now] step up
our efforts in the fight against antiSemitism internationally.
Romanian chairman Mihnea Constantinescu said: All share concern
that incidents of anti-Semitism are
steadily rising and agree that IHRAs
member countries and indeed IHRAs
experts need political tools with
which to fight this scourge.
Constantinescu explained that 24
of the 31 states were EU member
countries, so were committed to the
Stockholm Declaration.
That meant they were thereby
committed to fighting the evil of

German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a rally at the Brandenburg Gate against anti-Semitism

anti-Semitism through coordinated

international political action.
He added: By adopting this working definition, the IHRA is setting an
example of responsible conduct for
other international fora and hopes to
inspire them also to take action on a
legally-binding working definition.
The organisation, which focuses
on matters surrounding Holocaust
education, research and remem-

brance, also adopted the Working

Definition of Holocaust Denial and
Distortion, which it described as
another tool in the kit.
Mark Weitzman, chair of the IHRA
committee on anti-Semitism and
Holocaust denial, said: In order to
begin to address the problem of
anti-Semitism, there must be clarity
about what anti-Semitism actually is.
This is not a simple question.

Police probe Twitter abuse

of PinkNews Jewish founder
POLICE HAVE launched
an investigation after the
Jewish founder of online
newspaper PinkNews received hundreds of antiSemitic and homophobic
messages online.
Benjamin
Cohen
tweeted that he had read
a gay inclusive book to
his two young nieces
about a prince finding a
same-sex partner [see
right], but within hours
he was facing a barrage
of hate-fuelled abuse.
Some of those responsible have also targeted other highprofile Jewish figures.
Cohen said he had wanted to make
public a lovely moment with his sister and was shocked at the reaction.
Although he had previously been
targeted online, he told Jewish News
it had never been so vitriolic or in
such numbers, which he estimated to
be 300-plus in the space of less than
a day.
One message said: If all Jews would
go gay and lesbian wed all be happy.
Would save on our gas bill later.
Another said Cant survive an AIDS
shoah. Cohen was also accused of
child abuse and perversion.
Saying he had also approached Twitter executives in the hope the microblogging platform would block some

accounts, he added: There seems to

be a licence on Twitter to say these
things with a degree of impunity.
Some of those accounts do nothing but tweet abuse to Jewish and gay
people. It makes me question the
level of policing Twitter has in place.
Cohen who was due to give a
statement to police today continued: I dont know what can be done
but if theyre in the UK some of these
people should be approached and
questioned where possible.
Cabinet minister Theresa Villiers
said: This is truly shocking. I find it
appalling that people use the
anonymity of social media to inflict
vile anti-Semitic and homophobic
abuse. I welcome the fact that the police will investigate this case.

New code to stem online hatred

EUROPEAN JEWISH leaders anxious about the

massive growth in online anti-Semitism have
welcomed a new internet code of conduct agreed
between Brussels and tech giants such as Facebook, Twitter and Google.
The European Commissions
new Code of Conduct on Countering Illegal Hate Speech Online
includes a pledge by the companies to review the majority of
abuse reports within 24 hours,
and clamp down on xenophobic
content similar to that revealed
on the front page of last weeks
Jewish News [see right].
Microsoft and YouTube (owned
by Google) also signed up, as Vera
Jourova, the European Unions
commissioner for justice, said recent terror attacks had reminded
us of the urgent need to address online hate.
She added: Social media is unfortunately one
of the tools that terrorist groups use to radicalise
young people and racists use to spread violence
and hatred. This agreement is an important step
forward to ensure that the internet remains a place

of free and democratic expression, where European values and laws are respected. She was supported by Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt of the
Conference of European Rabbis, who said: Internet hate leads to a culture of fear.
We hope [the code] will be the
first step in combatting that culture and making internet users accountable.
Moshe Kantor of the European
Jewish Congress said there had
been a massive growth of online
hate speech and incitement in recent years and governments and
law enforcement agencies should
co-operate on the issue.
Many of those who have shed
blood on the streets of Europe in
recent years have been indoctrinated online, he said.
Signatories Twitter and Facebook are the two
most popular social-media sites in Europe. However
Twitters head of public policy for Europe warned
that while the company was happy to help, there
is a clear distinction between freedom of expression
and conduct that incites violence and hate.

EU lawyer says bosses can ban staff who

wear kippot and headscarves in workplace
EMPLOYERS CAN ban Jewish men wearing a
kippah or Muslim women wearing headscarves
at work if their company has a general policy
barring all political and religious symbols, a
senior EU lawyer has said.
Juliane Kokott, an advocate general at the
European Court of Justice said the hijab should
be viewed no differently from a kippah, a Sikh
turban or a Christian employee wearing a
prominent crucifix.
She said: While an employee cannot leave
his sex, skin colour, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age or disability at the door upon enter-

ing his employers premises, he may be expected to moderate the exercise of his religion
in the workplace.
Her ruling came on Tuesday after a Belgian
court sought to clarify what is banned under
EU anti-discrimination laws.
Belgian receptionist Samira Achbita claimed
religious discrimination after she was fired for
wearing a headscarf to work.
However, Kokotts ruling is not binding and
it is now up to the European Court of Justice
the EUs highest legal forum to consider the
final guidance on the matter.

LABOUR PARTY ANTI-SEMITISM SCANDAL

Naz Shah: I was ignorant about Judaism

SUSPENDED MP Naz Shah has said
she was ignorant about Judaism
when she endorsed the relocation of
Israel to America and vowed to take
personal responsibility for talking
to fellow Muslims about anti-Semitism, writes Justin Cohen.
The MP for Bradford West remains suspended from the Labour
Party for sharing a post on Facebook that called for the transportation of Israel to America, and adding
the words problem solved.
But, appearing at Sinai Synagogue
in Leeds on Sunday, she insisted her
views had changed since the 2014
post as a result of engaging with the
local Jewish community something
she insisted set her apart from her
predecessor George Galloway.
He used Palestine as a political
tool and he never engaged with people. When I engaged with the synagogue and had conversations, that is
when I changed. Until we have those
conversations we wont achieve
change, she told the audience during her first public appearance at a
Jewish event since the controversy.
It is my job in the Muslim community to highlight the issues of antiSemitism. Going to Auschwitz is a
fantastic idea but wont fix the problem. We need to educate the community. Its up to me to own the
narrative. To have conversations with
the Muslim community [about antiSemitism], thats my responsibility.

Bradford West MP Naz Shah was suspended after calling for Israels relocation

She apologised to both the House

of Commons and directly to the Jewish community through this newspaper in the wake of the revelations
about her social media posts, made
at the height of the Gaza conflict.
She told the gathering she wanted
to make a real apology rather than
a politicians apology, adding: I
looked at myself and asked whether I
had prejudice against Jewish people
But I realised I was ignorant and I
want to learn about the Jewish faith
and culture. I do not have hatred.
She said Israel stood out in the
Middle East as a democracy. And
questioned by QC Simon Myerson,
Shah said she had been clear about
Israels right to exist before her election and in conversations with con-

stituents, saying: I absolutely agree

Israel has a right to defend itself.
Asked if she understood boycotts
are largely aimed at Jewish people,
she told the gathering: Since I had
these conversations I understand
that but before I didnt. She added,
Hell no, Bradford is open to everyone when asked if she agreed with
Galloways call for Bradford to be an
Israel-free zone.
The event was attended by 130
members of the Leeds, Bradford and
York communities. A Leeds Jewish
Representative Council spokesman
said: The meeting was lively, respectful, and peaceful. It is part of a
wider process of engagement with
those from outside the Jewish community to build better relations and

an understanding of the concerns of

the Jewish community.
The talk initiated by the Leeds
Jewish Representative Council was
moved from the Orthodox Beit
Hamidrash Hagadol to Sinai following complaints about the gathering.
There were a small number of people in the community who didnt
want the meeting to go ahead but
they were wrong, a Representative
Council spokesman said.
He insisted there had been no issues between Shah and the council
at a meeting on a wide range of issues prior to the revelations about
the posts, which were revealed by
the Guido Fawkes blog.
Shah has held a number of meetings with the Jewish Labour Movement in the wake of her apologies.
The movements Alex Sobel said
the meeting reflected the strength
of feeling about Shahs postings on
social media.
He added: After two hours of
strong questioning, I doubt people
felt that Naz is anti-Semitic.
She was clear in her support of
Israel and that Israelis were welcome
to come to live and work in Bradford, repudiating George Galloways
odious comments about Bradford
being an Israel-free zone.
I call on people in the community to work with Naz so she better
understands Jewish life in the UK, Israel and the rest of the diaspora.

Her remorse appears

to be entirely genuine
SIMON

MYERSON QC
I QUESTIONED Naz Shah on Sunday night at the
communal meeting in Leeds. I was impressed
with the audiences behaviour she had, after
all, said anti-Semitic things and, although the
questions were tough, they were almost unanimously polite and people listened to her.
I dont think shes an anti-Semite and that
was the view of the vast majority. She was too
willing to engage and apologise, and she has
so little to gain. Check her Twitter feed for the
accusations of selling out. Shes critical of the
Israeli government but not of Israels existence
or right to defend itself. That isnt indiscriminate she hated Gaza but it is nuanced she
equally condemned Hamas and Hezbollah.
Anti-Semitism isnt at the top or her list of
priorities Bradford has myriad problems, not
least having been previously represented by
George Galloway. But she is committed to educating her community and herself.
She defended the Chakrabarti report and suggested Corbyn no longer regards Hamas as
friends. She said Labour prevented her publishing her apology instantly and put its own
house in order first, and that Corbyn is surrounded by a poor team. If the Labour leader
behaved like her, wed have less to worry about.

Labour reinstates slave slur activist

LABOUR WAS accused of once again failing to
match pledges on zero tolerance of anti-Semitism with action after a Labour activist who
faced a disciplinary process for claiming Jews
were chief financiers of the sugar and slave
trade had her suspension lifted.
Jackie Walker, who is vice-chair of the steering
group Momentum and of the South Thanet
Labour Party, made the comments in an online
post.
She is the first member suspended in recent
weeks during Labours anti-Semitism scandal to
be reinstated following an investigation leading a small number of party members to take to

social media vowing to end their membership.

Walker said: I am glad this investigation has
fully cleared me of any wrongdoing. I am not a
racist, but I robustly defend my right and the right
of others to speak openly and frankly about matters of grave political and historical importance.
Walkers solicitor, Martin Howe, said: The
danger with cases like this is that genuine debate and free speech has been silenced by the
chilling effect of unfair and inaccurate allegations of anti-Semitism against a person who has
fought against racism, in all forms, all her life.
The Jewish Labour Movement tweeted:
Jackie Walker repeated an anti-Semitic slur.

She showed no contrition. The outcome of this

process shows, once again, that the political
rhetoric of zero-tolerance on anti-Semitism is
not matched by action. This is why we are proposing changes to party rules.
Jonathan Arkush, president of the Board of
Deputies, said: We find it remarkable that
Jackie Walker has been readmitted to the
Labour Party without any disciplinary sanctions
and by a process completely lacking in transparency. We are very disturbed by the way she
has reacted with unrepentant and defiant
statements.

LBC sacks suspended Livingstone Berger confirms mayor move

KEN LIVINGSTONE will not be
returning to the LBC airwaves
in the wake of his controversial
Hitler remark.
Bosses at the radio station
decided the former mayor will
not be welcomed back as a
co-presenter of his Saturday
morning programme after
being absent in recent weeks
due to rules in the lead-up to
the EU referendum.
An LBC spokesperson told
Jewish News: Ken is not currently presenting on LBC and
will not be returning.
The controversial politician
was suspended by Labour last
month after telling another
radio station that Hitler supported Zionism before he
went mad.
He then refused repeatedly
during a subsequent interview
on the LBC show he previously presented to say sorry
to the Jewish community.
The disciplinary procedure

Off air: Ken Livingstone

against him is expected to

conclude in July but many
senior politicians and community leaders have called for his
permanent expulsion.
Meanwhile,
Livingstone
was due to address the Oxford Union last night.
Isaac Virchis, president of
the Oxford University Jewish
Society, said: The Oxford
Union and Oxford University
have a proud tradition of freedom of speech and Oxford

students are among the best

in the country at challenging
those with problematic views.
Mr Livingstone will not be
given an easy ride and I look
forward to seeing him scrutinised and discredited during
his address later this week.
A spokesman for the Oxford
Union said the society is historically the last bastion of
free speech as such, we are
strongly against the no-platforming policies advocated
by many organisations...
Any speaker is open to be
challenged by members in
the discussions we host.
In an address to the Union
last week, the Chief Rabbi
said: Were seeing in Europe,
and here in the UK as well, an
increase in anti-Semitic sentiment and activity. And one is
saddened to read the essence
of the report of Baroness Royall, concerning the Oxford University Labour Club and the

events that have happened

here on this campus.
He added: Im sure you
join with me in recognising
there can only be zero tolerance towards all anti-Semitism,
here in Oxford, on all campuses in this country, and
within our society at large.
Describing Zionism as a reflection of Judaism, Rabbi
Mirvis said: Zionism today is
best defined as the right of the
Jewish people, like all peoples, for self-determination in
our own homeland within secure borders.
Therefore, if one accepts
this definition, which is the
definition that most people
hold, that whole notion of antiZionism amounts to an attack
on the Jewish people.
He described as regrettable the recent election of
NUS president Malia Bouattia,
who has previously spoken of
Zionist-led media.

LUCIANA BERGER has joined

the race to be Labours mayoral
candidate in Liverpool, becoming the second frontbencher to
mount a bid to be in charge of a
key northern city.
The Jewish politician, who is
shadow minister for mental
health, put her name forward to
be the new Liverpool metro
mayor, making a formal announcement in her constituency
on Tuesday.
She said the role was a massive opportunity to unite the
city region and launch it on to
an international stage, according to the Guardian.
Her candidacy comes weeks
after shadow home secretary
Andy Burnham announced his
intention to run for mayor in
Greater Manchester.
The Liverpool Wavertree MP
will be running against the incumbent mayor, Joe Anderson,
and fellow Liverpudlian MP
Steve Rotheram.

Leaving Westminster? Luciana Berger

The Labour nomination for

the Liverpool metro mayor is
due to take place in the summer, while the election will be

the requirements of EU membership. She also pointed to
EUs record of criticising Israel.

Rabbis battle against Brexit

SENIOR RABBIS IN the Reform
and Liberal movements have
joined dozens of faith leaders
in warning against Britain leaving the European Union.
Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner
and Rabbi Danny Rich were
among 37 figures to sign a letter insisting challenges like
combating poverty and tackling climate change and migration can be addressed only
in a global context.
Christian, Muslim, Sikh,
Hindu and Jewish leaders all
put their names to the letter in
the Observer, alongside leading interfaith figures.
Saying faith was about building bridges rather than erecting barriers, they added: As
leaders and senior figures of
faith communities, we urge our
co-religionists and others to
think about the implications of a
Leave vote for the things about

which we are most passionate.

The past 70 years has been the
longest period of peace in Europes history. Institutions that
enable us to work together
and understand both our differences and what we share in
common contribute to our increased security and sense of
collective endeavour.
Among the other Jewish signatories were former Board of
Deputies president Vivian Wineman, Nisa Nashim founder
Laura Marks and Ben Rich, former chief executive of the
Movement for Reform Judaism.

Sacks accepts 1.1m Templeton Prize

FORMER CHIEF Rabbi Lord
Jonathan Sacks has issued a stark
warning to the West about outsourcing morality in a speech
delivered as he accepted the
1.1million Templeton Prize.
Rabbi Sacks, 68, received the
award for bringing spiritual insight to the public conversation
in a ceremony in central London
attended by clergy, faith leaders,
dignitaries and representatives
from the Jewish community.
On a night when music was
provided by the Shabbaton
Choir and the Sacks Morasha
Primary School, Sacks said that
when he found out hed won he
was almost rendered speechless, an event that would have
been unprecedented in the history of the rabbinate.
On a more serious note, he

Lord Sacks during the ceremony

warned that 2016 was a time of

insecurity and instability and
that the future of the West and
the unique form of freedom it

Receiving his prize from Charles

has pioneered for the past four

centuries is altogether at risk.
He described how conscience had been outsourced
to regulatory bodies and that,
having reduced moral choice
to economics, we transferred
the consequences of our
choices to politics.
Problems with this approach
were only now becoming stark,
he said, listing unemployment,
the threat to jobs posed by artificial intelligence, low interest
rates discouraging saving,
wildly inflated pay for chief
executives and a lowering of living standards for the working
and middle classes.
The Prince of Wales honoured
Sacks earlier this year at Clarence
House, presenting him with the
iconic Templeton Prize pyramid.

Anti-Israel schoolgirl barred from speech competition

A BRITISH-Palestinian schoolgirl
has been expelled from a national speaking challenge after
UK supporters of Israel complained her presentation was
anti-Semitic.
Leanne Mohamad, 15, who
was born in the Al-Burj AlShamali refugee camp in
Lebanon, gave a speech on the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict, alleging "discrimination" of Palestinians and citing the death of her
one-year old cousin from lack of

medical treatment.
A video of her speech has
been viewed more than 12,500
times on YouTube, but despite
the Wanstead High School student winning the regional round,
judges from Speakers Trust and
Jack Petchey Foundation halted
her progress.
The panel said Mohamad
breached two rules, these being
that the speech must have a
positive and uplifting message
and that a speaker should never

inflame or offend the audience

or insult others.
Mohamad, whose video was
subsequently removed from the
Speakers Trust website and
YouTube channel, tweeted:
Why is it called a speak out

Pro-Israel group StandWithUs
said it was deeply concerned
with the girls speech, saying it
contained racist overtones, libels, exaggerations and lies

SPECIAL REPORT: THE LATEST ISRAELI HIGH-TECH INNOVATIONS

Recent weeks have seen yet more life-changing innovations emerge from
Israel, including printed human organs and software that can spot a terrorist
from facial patterns. Stephen Oryszczuk reports on the latest developments
pain, literally, and have come up with HANDS
(Human-Assisted Needle Delivery System), a
cutely-named robot that takes over the job of
injecting in such situations. It uses advanced
algorithms and real-time image processing to
help the (human) operator to hit the spot. This
laser-guided missile of the medical world is
still in its developmental phase. Nurses
worldwide await further news.

existing technology which blocks specific types of

pain, when he worked out how to manipulate
the frequency and wave shape of the electrical
nerve-stimulation technology behind it. To Zvi,
this was just an interesting distraction (not
something that can be said for period pain)
because he was busy working on other things at
the time, so Chen took over, developing iPulse
Medical and something which provides nearly
instant relief from cramps. How? You put gel
pads with electrodes on the painful area then
clip the device to a belt or pocket. Moreover, it
doesnt interfere with the womans hormone
balance or menstrual cycle, Chen says. News of
the breakthrough was greeted anxiously by
hot-water bottle manufacturers.

The market for bio-printing will soon be worth 5billion a year

3D STEM CELL PRINTING

THREE-DIMENSIONAL PRINTING has been
with us for a while, but Ness Ziona firm Nano
Dimension recently took it to a completely
new level, successfully lab-testing a 3D bioprinter for stem cells, from which organs can
be made. The idea of manufacturing lifes
building blocks is as astronomical today as it
would have been far-fetched 10 or even five
years ago. The trial, conducted with Israeli
biotech firm Accellta Ltd, showed that the
technology can deliver large quantities of
high-quality cells which can be an enabler for
printing even large and complex tissues and
organs. Analysts say the market for bioprinting will be worth 5billion in eight years
time. But is it really print-your-own-kidney

time? Investors think so. The companys shares

leapt 19 percent on the news.

TERRORIST RECOGNITION APP

FACIAL RECOGNITION software has so far
been used to match faces to Facebook
photos, mainly for advertisers to tailor their
offerings as you walk past their billboards. But
Tel Aviv-based Faception, which deals in
facial personality profiling, has moved us
from sales to security. The start-up says its
software can tell a terrorist just by facial
features, and claims to have identified nine of
the 11 Paris attackers based just on looks.
How? Our personality is determined by our
DNA and reflected in our face, says boss Shai
Gilboa. Its a kind of signal. The two-yearold firm analyses faces from video streams and
other databases, encodes them in
proprietary image descriptors and matches
them to personality traits. Using machinelearning techniques, the company built a
database of top-secret classifiers, which it
says can tell if someone is a psychopath,
scientist or swindler. Food for thought when
next having your photo taken.

electric, but charging such vehicles has thus far
been a pain in the circuit board, because drivers
end up carrying heavy and expensive batteries
which power them for only a certain distance.
The cleverly-named ElectRoad says it has the
answer: roads that wirelessly charge your battery
as you drive along them. Electric lines integrated
into urban roads and hooked up to the national
grid do the job perfectly easily, the company
says, and can be laid at an astonishing speed.
ElectRoads first target market is bus companies
because buses often use special lanes, but the
company hopes to expand beyond this. All
around the world, governments are facing public
policy pressure to cut emissions and reduce
reliance on oil, so the idea of electric roads
could well gain traction. Just watch where you
step when youre crossing on Shabbat.

British fascists sieg heil at Buchenwald Barnet plans Winton tribute

GERMAN AUTHORITIES are

A spokeswoman for the

there. Sandra Siegmund says
officials filed a criminal complaint to police after being informed of the picture.
About 250,000 prisoners
were held at Buchenwald between July 1937 and 11 April
1945, when the camp was entered by members of the US
Third Army.
It is estimated that 56,000

SPECIAL REPORT

SHUL VERSUS SCHOOL

Synagogues are having to compete for young peoples attention
as social hubs because that key role is being taken over by the
increasing number of Jewish schools. Caron Kemp investigates
rience and so, at least to some extent, they
use their spare time to fulfill this aim with
other activities. The disconnect sometimes
with the Jewish community is, in my opinion,
more a reflection of this pressure than anything else.
What is known is that since 2006, eight new
Jewish primary schools have opened their
doors in north-west London alone, with two
more applications currently being considered
by the Department for Education. And the
number of Jewish pupils enrolled in community schools increased from around 17,000 in
the mid-90s to around 26,000 in 2011. David
Collins, director of young people and young
families at Tribe United Synagogue, recognises the need to respond to this shift.
Our Jewish community is always changing
and evolving, he admits. The crucial challenge that we must respond to is to be continually looking for opportunities to engage
people in whatever way best fits them. From
a US perspective, this means recognising

there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Rather, we have to be creative and think outside the traditional Saturday-morning Shabbatservice box.
Similarly, the UJIAs Israel: Get Connected
programme, in which 350 Year 12 pupils from
four schools participated in an informal Israel
education day, is but one new initiative created in response to the changing climate.
UJIAs chief executive, Michael Wegier, concludes: The Jewish communal landscape is always evolving and the growth of Jewish
schools is part of that evolution.
UJIA has worked closely with schools and
other organisations to respond and adapt to
what our young people need.
This includes supporting the informal education offering at Jewish secondaries while
at the same time continuing to be a key
founder of the Zionist youth movements,
which offer thousands of young community
members the chance to develop their Jewish
identity and relationship with Israel.

Two brand new Orthodox secondary schools plan to open in north-London in the next few years

mbitious plans to open two modern

Orthodox Jewish secondary schools in
north London have been announced
this year. Backers hope that Kedem High
and Barkai School will welcome their first
students in the next few years.
While many parents will understandably
breathe a sigh of relief at these developments Jewish schools are generally oversubscribed and parents in north London,
particularly, have expressed concern at the
dearth of school spaces the announcements
once again open the debate about the effects
the rapid growth of Jewish schools have on
the wider community.
According to a Strategic Review published
by the United Synagogue last year, shuls are
now forced to compete with schools in certain
situations.
Where synagogues were once the central
way for young Jews to socialise with each
other, they now meet in school, it says.
Similarly, the Jewish Leadership Council
and UJIA released the Commission on Provision for Young People in the Jewish Community report last year, in which they suggest the
rise in Jewish schools may have contributed
to a decline in youth movement activities.
Jewish schools are an opportunity, and also
a challenge, the report explains. The increasing number of young people in Jewish schools
has led to tension and rivalry between provision for young people in Jewish schools and
what is provided by the youth movements,
other youth providers and synagogues.
For one mother, who wishes to remain
anonymous, these reports come as no surprise.
I send my children to a Jewish school because I want them to have a good education
surrounded by like-minded children and families, and to ensure they have a positive Jewish
experience, she says.
But realistically, the knock-on effect is I feel
there is less need to engage with my local synagogue beyond paying my membership fees.
My children get so much Jewish input five days
a week and we have made some amazing

friends with the parents that, rightly or

wrongly, it is not my priority.
And looking into the future, she does not
see the trend changing.
We arent yet at the stage of youth groups
and Israel tours but with schools offering trips
to Israel and a solid Jewish social life, Im not
sure I see the need for it personally.
While the sense of identity and belonging
Jewish schools give to families is to be
praised, the subsequent disengagement with
wider communal activities is not what the
schools themselves desire.
While the level of observance and engagement will vary between schools, there is a universal objective across schools to enthuse
students with a love for their religion, explains Rabbi David Meyer, executive director
of Partnership for Jewish Schools.
The decision of a parent to send a child to
a Jewish school is a significant statement in
the familys Jewish identity and some may feel
this means they can reduce engagement in
other areas.
However, this is not necessarily the perspective of the schools, which would look to parents to support and supplement the Jewish
education at home and in the synagogue.
Indeed Alma Primary Schools headteacher
Marc Shoffren believes lessons come alive
when put into practice in real life.
There would be no point in teaching reading if the children never picked up a book outside school, or teaching art without the
expectation that they would practise it at
home or go to an art gallery, he explains.
Likewise we teach Judaism so our pupils
can make sense of their Jewish life and we encourage parents to choose activities which enhance this experience.
However, he also notes schools are not necessarily or entirely to blame for the disconnection with wider communal life We live in a
society where there are a wide plethora of
things to do and religion is but one of them.
Parents are under enormous pressure to
give their children a varied and full life expe-

A tale of two suspensions
BRITISH JEWS interested
in Labours response to
charges of anti-Semitism
within its ranks may be
baffled by news this week
that the party has readmitted an activist who
claimed Jews were the
chief financiers of the

That Jews were involved in, and benefitted
from, the slave trade is
not in question several
scholars (including rabbis
and Jewish historians)
have said as much.
Jewish merchants and

culpable as the non-Jewish British and American
beneficiaries.
But for Walker to say, in

about sanctioning Israel,
that Jews were the chief
financiers of the slave
trade is something else

Come on, Jackie. Lets

PACK YOUR BAGS IF EU

VOTE IS TO STAY IN
How could any Jewish person consider
voting to remain in the EU on 23 June? If
we stay in the citizens of Turkey a Muslim country will soon be able to join us
in Europe.
The fact that Turkey will be part of this
project means we will be swamped by
Turkish Muslim immigrants on our tiny island, along with many jihadists.
If you plan on voting to stay in, you
should have your bags packed ready to
leave the UK for good, as Muslim Turks
are not likely to live in peace with the
Jewish community here.
As for the European Union super state
dream being some protection against
war, can I remind readers it was originally
Hitler who wanted a single European
state. Our forefathers fought back so we
could be independent, free and rule ourselves.

OUT VOTE WILL NOT

HARM OUR ECONOMY
There is a lot of scaremongering going
on in connection with staying in or leaving the EU. Hand grenades filled with
opinions and assumptions are lobbed
about in both directions.
One of the key arguments in the war of
words from those wanting to stay is that
the UK, on relinquishing membership, will
lose market share in Europe.
Apart from the fact that the EU buys
more from the UK than the other way
round and the UK delivers more to nonEU countries than EU ones, there are
practical considerations that escape the
experience of politicians.
It is questionable whether any politician ever tried to talk to a professional
buyer to find out about the process and
practice that goes into securing supplies
for a complex production process or buying a sheep for slaughter.
It is therefore a futile argument that
the economy of Great Britain depends on
our membership of the EU. As long as
Britain manages to maintain its competitive position, our economy will not suffer.

WHERE WOULD WE
BE WITHOUT ISRAEL?
My husband and I visit Israel frequently,
not as tourists but with our family, seeing
daily life in the shops, hospitals and public institutions. I therefore feel qualified
to write about the current daily situation
faced by our people there.
The focus is often on the plight of the
Palestinians, overlooking the many difficulties faced also by Israelis during a particularly worrying time with fear of
terrorist and other attacks.
There is much inaccurate and unjust reporting and criticism leveled at Israel. Its
detractors and the world at large must
understand that Israels response, albeit
restrained, must take into consideration
situations that are a matter of life or
death. Walls can be taken down, but a
lost life cannot be resurrected except by
the Almighty in messianic times.
Yet many of the measures Israel takes
simply to protect its citizens are branded
as an invasion of privacy or inconvenient
to the smooth running of Palestinian
lives.
All over the country, Israeli lives are
threatened on a daily basis. Our innocent
citizens and soldiers are victims of terrorists who have no regard whatsoever for
the value of life.
Even ambulances drivers, whose sole
mission is to save lives, have their very
own lives under threat.
Terrorists whose lives have been saved
by Israeli medical teams show their gratitude by reverting to their evil activities.
What a way to reward a good deed.
Before critics of Israel give voice, at the
very least visit or, better still, experience

CHAKRABARTI SHOULD
STEP DOWN NOW
Labours anti-Semtism inquiry chair Shami
Chakrabarti would be outraged by the
police or the military, say, conducting an
internal investigation by one of their own.
Yet she plans to do just that herself by
joining the political party into which she
is about to launch a probe.
Anti-Semitism is not simply racism.
Jews come in all shades of white, brown
and black. There are European, Indian
and African Jews.
Anti-Semitism is the oldest religious
bigotry and has nothing to do with the
colour of ones skin or country of origin.
To subsume this intended probe into
anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, coming
almost exclusively from the ranks of the far
left, into a wider look at racism is a sign

a stay in Israel and witness at first hand

what is truly going on there. You will be
very pleasantly surprised and proud to
see a resilient, positive-thinking and
amazing people who continue their daily
lives, despite undue pressures.
These are people not only looking
after their own welfare and wellbeing,
but also contributing to that of the entire
world. Where would we all be without
our beloved Israel?

WE SHOULD BE PROUD
OF OUR MISCELLANY
I must be one of many who feel sad and
annoyed to read letters such as those by
Dr L B Sokolic (Jewish News, 5 May) and
the many previously from regular writer
Martin Stern.
I was brought up during and after the
Second World War in an Orthodox Jewish family (my rabbi and Hebrew teacher
was Dr Julian Jakobovits, father of Immanuel, and my own father was chairman
of our synagogue).
Long ago, however, I found my true
home in Liberal Judaism. There, as well
as being appreciative of my heritage, I
have total equality. I can also be questioning, critical and enquiring.
Dr Sokolic must know that Judaism has
constantly evolved and adapted and
there has always been a variety of viewpoints, ritual and practice.
We should be proud that today our
community encompasses views from secular and cultural to ultra-Orthodox, but
we are still all one people.
Furthermore, as we all know, the current issue of anti-Semitism does not differentiate between those groups, nor, as
is often remarked, did Hitler.
Dr Sokolic is concerned that many
Liberal Jews are not halachically Jewish.
It is true that we are welcoming to those
who wish to convert to Judaism, but as
the old saying goes: Anyone who
wishes to become Jewish must be
meshuggah, and if they are meshuggah
they must be Jewish.
It is fortunate that it was Moses, and
not Dr Sokolic, who was in charge of
leading the Israelites out of Egypt since,
if he were scrutinising backgrounds,
there would have been considerably
fewer than the 600,000 men (plus dependants) referred to in Exodus approved by
him to lead us to the Promised Land.

ARE WE PARANOID
OVER ANTI-SEMITISM?

Okay, who slipped in Anti-Semitilcious,

Racismizzical and Bigottyfluff?!

I detect in the debate on anti-Semitism in

the Labour Party that the underlying
theme of the Ken Livingstone camp is that
anti-Semitism does not really exist and
Jews are being paranoid about a trivial
matter. Furthermore, such accusations are
being used by Zionists to stifle legitimate criticism of Israels apartheid policies vis--vis the Palestinians. It is implied
that these slurs on progressive politicians feed on Islamophobia and those
making them should be prosecuted for
their racist allegations.

OPINION: JENNI FRAZER

Stop the Labour hamster

wheel I want to get off!
A FRIEND was telling me about a sadly common experience that of getting caught up in
nonsensical and repetitive bureaucracy.
She was advised that her credit card was about
to expire, but a new one failed to arrive. Cue one
of those intensely irritating conversations with her
bank in which the bank refused to acknowledge
she was the account holder and demanded as
proof of her identity the last three numbers on
the new credit card, which she did not have.
That hamster-on-a-wheel sensation and weve
all been there, having endless rows with faceless
bureaucrats who cant or wont deviate from their
script could easily apply to events of the last
week or so, both in Israel and here at home.
Both the loop effect and the tiresome repetitiveness are evident in so many stories of pressing interest to Jewish News readers: there is the
bizarre political situation in Israel in which Benjamin Netanyahu now holds something like eight
portfolios of state in a desperate game of musical chairs, promising something to everyone in
an increasingly insane bid to hold on to power.
Or there is the inevitable knuckle-dragging of
those who surround the Labour leadership and
the hot potato of anti-Semitism with which no
one wants to deal. I have said before in this
space that the reason Corbyns Labour is not
managing its anti-Semitism problem is because Jeremy Corbyn himself doesnt care over
much about how the Jewish community feels.

Oh, sure, he pays lip service to opposing antiSemitism and those writing about him feel
obliged to repeat the mantra that he doesnt have
an anti-Semitic bone in his body. Personally I feel
no such obligation; Id feel a lot more in tune with
Mr Corbyn if he and his team had the courtesy to
respond to the invitation of the Israeli Labour
leader, Isaac Herzog, for him to visit Yad Vashem.
I dont know why anyone is surprised that the
Corbynistas didn't respond. The entire team
comes from the school of if-we-dont answer-itmight-go-away-la-la-la and I am perfectly certain that they hoped that everyone had forgotten
the invitation, or that if they crossed their fingers
behind Corbyns back it wouldnt count.
Similarly, what are we to make of the reinstatement of Jackie Walker, vice-chair of the
Corbyn-supporting Momentum group, only
weeks after being suspended from the Labour
Party for Facebook comments relating to Jews
as chief financiers of the slave trade?
No explanation at the time of writing has
been given for Walkers reinstatement and it
makes one tremble for the outcome of the already
controversial Shami Chakrabarti inquiry. No one
will be less shocked than me if the whole wretched
ragtaggle of suspendees, from Ken Livingstone to
the bilious Tony Greenstein, are reinstated.
Ironically, the one person who appears to get
the gnawing anxiety between the Jewish community and the Labour Party is the woman who kicked

all this furore off, Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West.

Ms Shah has come a long way since the summer of 2014 when she and a bunch of Bradfordbased boycotters were lying on the ground
playing dead as though they had been shot by
Israeli troops. It was Ms Shahs comments about
Israel and its possible relocation to the United
States which bust open the anti-Semitism row.
But Ms Shah, who was suspended from the
party, not only understood that what was required was a fulsome apology which she made
in Parliament but some sort of rapprochement
with the Jewish community. Accordingly the MP,
who, unlike her leader does know how to respond to invitations, accepted the offer to speak
to Leeds Jews on Sunday. It does not exactly
cover our community in glory that the meeting
had to be moved from Beth Hamedrash Hagadol
to Sinai Reform after, allegedly, threats of violence from Jews if the meeting went ahead.
I dont expect Ms Shah to turn into a
philosemite overnight and I daresay that anyone
who is representing a constituency such as hers
must have had to buy in to a great deal of the vile
anti-Israel narrative that passes for political debate
in some communities. But at least she is trying.
You might say that she is departing from the
script, and refusing to stay a hamster, giving the
same old tired responses, over and over again.
A few less hamsters in public life, and the inevitable need not be so inevitable.

OPINION: STEPHEN TUNSTALL & DAVID BROWN

UK NEWS

How to make progress in

a toxic political climate
I OFTEN tell people that each visit to Palestine
and Israel leaves me more perplexed about the
situation than I was before. Every new character
I meet and narrative I hear obfuscates any misguided sense of clarity I foolishly thought I was
developing. I return more perplexed by the contradictions the incredible potential yet tragic
circumstances of the land and its peoples.
In that respect, my recent visit was no different.
Im sad to say I returned just as downhearted
about this human-made tragedy. However, this
trip was a unique experience for me. I had never
visited an Israeli settlement in the occupied West
Bank before, let alone alongside eight British
Jewish leaders, nearly all of whom I heard describe themselves as proud Zionists.
For us to then drive five minutes across the
valley to a Palestinian Christian farm, Daoud
Nassars Tent of Nations, illustrated starkly the
parallel lives and fortunes of the West Banks inhabitants in a way I had only been able to read
about previously. Hearing Daouds testimony of
injustice was more powerful than any Western
activists well-meaning protestations can be.
Both Daoud and Rabbi Shlomo Riskin in Efrat
presented their claims to the land while speaking
about their desire to live in peace. It seems, at
least within a two-state solution, it will not be
possible for both to have it all their own way.
Rabbi Riskins insistence that he would be willing to leave Efrat in the event of a peace agree-

ment was met with derision and scepticism from

our group. In actual fact, I was surprised at the
strength of this scepticism among our Jewish
contingent and this realisation became part of the
most important lesson of the study tour.
The most instructive part of the trip for me
wasnt anything I heard from the many talking
heads we were paraded before, but listening to
the reflections and criticisms offered by Jewish
members of our group.
Being a Christian who works closely with
Palestinian communities, I rarely get to hear
these insights and debates among British Jews.
To have the opportunity to do so on this trip was
an eye opening experience, and I am grateful to
these Jewish leaders now friends for their
honesty and integrity when sharing about what
wed seen and experienced together.
At home in the UK, on social media and in the
press, we all feel the need to defend our causes
come what may, in the face of perceived propaganda and delegitimisation. There is no space for
publicly questioning the orthodoxy of whatever
ones own camp is supposed to stand for. So for
me to hear a fellow participant describing how difficult they found it to reconcile what theyd witnessed because it is not the Israel I know, and see
another probing an Israeli diplomat about their
governments settlement policy, was a deeply
poignant experience. It was only possible because
the Council of Christians and Jews had taken care

to create an environment where we didnt feel the

need to revert to our simplistic defensive positions
about the rights and wrongs of the occupation.
We were able to express our views freely without fearing condemnation and this created fertile ground for honest debate.
I had to think twice before accepting the invitation to join the tour. Visiting settlers and fraternising with Zionists is beyond the pale for many
Palestinians and those advocating with them. But
I saw an opportunity for bringing the narrative I
see and hear daily to a different audience, and in
return expose myself to narratives which I do not
often encounter on a personal level. The makeup of the group and the people and places we
visited did not allow for skirting around the issues
or simply exchanging interfaith platitudes.
We were forced to respectfully confront the
deeply divisive issue of Palestine and Israel. This
is not done often and it is not often done well.
However, I return knowing I have not had to
compromise the values and ideals I believe in. I
am grateful for the new relationships I have with
people whose jobs will often involve them working on the opposite side of an issue.
We will remain in our respective camps. We all
want to see shalom in the land but disagree on
how to achieve it. But in a poisonous political climate, this was progress.

Embrace the Middle East

Being a Christian who

Palestinians, I rarely hear
British Jewish voices

From discord to dialogue

to a fresh path to peace
A PRIEST, a rabbi, a minister and some NGO
workers get on a plane. While the spirit of our
group was often full of good humour, the recent Council of Christians and Jews delegation
to Israel and the Palestinian Territories was
anything but a joke.
Over three packed days our group [which
included my upstairs neighbour on this page]
encountered inspiring activists, officials who
shared perspectives somewhat out-of-step
with those activists, and the palpable fears of
Israelis and Palestinians, accentuated on the
first day by news of yet another stabbing just
a short distance from our group at Damascus
Gate.
The programme highlighted the many inspiring people and groups working on intercommunal relations within Israel proper and
across the Green Line.
I was particularly impressed and moved by
Ayman Odeh MKs leadership on fostering positive political engagement and delivering tangible improvements for Palestinian citizens of
Israel; Hana Bendcowsky, programme director
for the Jerusalem Centre for Christian-Jewish
relations, for her commitment to harnessing the
best of religious teaching and community leadership; Sami Awad, executive director of the
Holy Land Trust, who adopts spiritual counselling in conflict resolution and brings together
Israelis living over the Green Line with their
Palestinian neighbours; and the team at Shaare
Tzedek for their resilience while treating terrorists alongside their victims and revolutionary
approaches to paediatric medicine, serving
mostly children from Charedi and Arab families.

We did not shy away from the harsh realities

that demonstrate the chasm that exists between the supposed desire of the majorities in
both societies for peace and the likelihood of
any immediate or significant progress towards
a settlement of this conflict.
There were disagreements in our group
about the history, as well as the agency and responsibility of both Israelis and Palestinians,
and especially their leaders, regarding the current intractable situation.
Nevertheless, as a proud Zionist Jew, hearing
from Palestinians about their day-to-day struggles under military occupation, as well as some
victims of the recent surge in Israeli ultra-nationalist violence (Price Tag), the most challenging
part of my experience was balancing a need to
express my love and defence of Israel and Zionism with an acknowledgment that Zionism is,
at the very least, partly responsible for the current awful reality facing a whole people.
Another challenge was that despite good intentions, it often felt that many people within
the group and among those we met were not
speaking the same language, standing in the
same place but clearly not on common ground.
One of my pet hate phrases, co-religionists, came up, indicating how faith doesnt
translate neatly when seeking to encompass
the culture, peoplehood, civilisation, and, yes,
religious belief and practice, that is Judaism
and Jewish identify.
Much of Christian or the lefts engagement
with Israel isnt on the same page as many of
us within the Jewish Zionist left, as there appears to be a lack of appreciation for the deep

historical and communal ties that drive Zionism

and our collective identity.
Similarly, too often, some within the Jewish
or Zionist tent hear pro-Palestinian as synonymous with anti-Israel.
Our group included passionate activists
committed to supporting the Palestinian people and their fight for statehood.
While Im not blind to the fact that some of
their fellow travellers are driven by hostility
towards Israel (and in some fringe cases antipathy towards Jews), pro-Palestinian leaders
on our delegation were motivated by the
highest values of social justice and genuinely
committed to appreciating Israeli and Jewish
perspectives.
We were all eager to export calm engagement from UK inter-communal relations, rather
than import hate into our communities in
Britain.
Perhaps the most reassuring part of the experience came from our group interactions,
where there was as much diversity of opinion
and relationship within each cultures representatives as there was across the whole group.
This highlighted that, despite the sloganeering narratives we hear from some, only by embracing complexity and context, and genuinely
seeking to understand not agree with the
variety of perspectives held by Israelis, Palestinians, and all connected to their plight, can
we hope to move from discord towards dialogue, and hopefully edge closer towards
peace.

OPINION:
RABBI MIRIAM
BERGER
AND MARK MAIER
OPINION:
YOHANNA
ARBIB-PERUGIA

Mine is a city of contrasts

and baffling contradictions
AMID THIS weeks Jerusalem Day celebrations
is an annual tradition not nearly as festive.
Every year, the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics issues Jerusalem Day figures reflecting demographic, economic, cultural and educational
changes that offer a broad perspective on the
city's development.
No matter what Jerusalem Day statistics reveal this year, we know this: Jerusalem 2016
hardly resembles Jerusalem of a decade, two
decades or five decades ago.
Some of Jerusalems transformations are visible to any visitor who has returned time and
time again to witness the astounding physical
changes in the city. Other changes are less obvious, unless, of course, you are one of the
830,000 Jerusalemites whose perspective is
different than those passing through.
As someone who divides her time between
Jerusalem and Rome, I know that to truly understand Jerusalem you must experience it its
past and its present. Jerusalem is revered for its
ancient history and its religious significance to
three monotheistic faiths, yet true appreciation
of Jerusalem also comes from seeing opportunities in modern-day challenges.
On 10 June 1967, the euphoria of the Six
Day War and the reunification of Jerusalem
quickly dissolved into a new reality. Jerusalems
story in the ensuing years is one of vast demographic changes.

On that day, 49 years ago, 25 percent of the

city was Arab and 17 percent was ultra-Orthodox. Today, 37 percent of Jerusalems residents are Arab and 34 percent ultra-Orthodox,
making up more than 70 percent of the citys
populace.
To truly appreciate Jerusalem is to understand what is behind annual statistics and
recognise what is needed to build a vibrant
and thriving city for all residents Jews, Arabs
and Christians, secular and ultra-Orthodox,
young and old.
To truly feel Jerusalem is to have ones finger on the pulse, attentiveness to all residents,
knowing that the south western neighbourhoods of Gonenim and Gilo have different
needs but are no more important than those
in east Jerusalems Wadi Al Joz or Sur Baher.
To truly make a difference in Jerusalem
means developing trust and credibility with
population groups whose cultural mores dont
easily allow for change.
No one understood the city better than legendary Mayor Teddy Kollek, who presided
over a rapidly changing Jerusalem from 1966
until 1993.
Fifty years ago he founded The Jerusalem
Foundation, an institution with location-based
experts on Jerusalem who live and breathe this
city, closely monitoring trends all year round,
who not only understand its challenges but

look for the opportunities to address them.

They know that behind the annual statistics
lies a Holocaust survivor who needs support;
an East Jerusalem child who needs a community centre for after school activities; an
Ethiopian immigrant who cannot read; an ultraOrthodox child for whom science is foreign; a
musically gifted child who cannot afford to lessons to allow him to thrive and shine.
During times of relative calm it is easy to
practice what we all preach, the principles of
mutual respect and understanding. Yet values
of tolerance and cultural awareness are tested
during times of insecurity, and a community
foundation cannot fail that test when it operates in one of the worlds most complex cities.
Instead, we hold fast to these core values,
identify and empathise with all residents on
the one hand grateful to security forces who
protect innocent children on their way to
kindergarten while recognising the discomfort
those same forces may bring as a nurse in a
hijab makes her way to work.
Jerusalem Days statistics arent newsworthy for those who experience the city every
day. What is newsworthy is the energy devoted by so many who will not give up hope,
who will not succumb in difficult times and
who devote themselves to Jerusalems future
so it can be a source of inspiration for its
people and the world.

GAZA IN
SHADES
OF GREY

Francine Wolfisz talks to

author Jemma Wayne
about her gritty new novel
on the 2014 Gaza conflict

hen conflict arose between Israel and

Gaza two years ago, author Jemma
Wayne noticed 2014 had become
something of a tipping point.
There was an alarming rise in anti-Semitic attacks, allegations of media bias, boycotts against
not just Israeli but kosher products, and thousands of protesters marching with placards reading Hitler, you were right.
But amid this latest wave of anti-Israel and antiJewish sentiment, Wayne couldnt help but notice
there was also a sense of triumphalism from both
sides of the conflict, which claimed the lives of
2,100 Palestinians and 71 Israelis.
I was used to seeing Palestinians cheering the
deaths of Israelis, but this was the first time I saw
the reverse image Israelis celebrating tragedy
in Gaza, explains the north London-based author, who this week sees the publication of her
second novel, Chains of Sand.
People were not responding with any amount
of sympathy or regret or acknowledging the humanity of the situation, but instead with these
passionate justifications of why Israel was right.
Thats not to say Israel wasnt within its legal
rights, just that people had been pushed to these
really polarised extremes and had lost any kind of
ability to make a moral judgement on these actions that were taking place.
As with many situations in life, the established
journalist and Jewish News columnist refused to
see the conflict as mere black and white and decided to put pen to paper to explore the grey.
Chains of Sand, billed as the first fictional account of the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, revolves
around the parallel stories of 26-year-old Israeli
army veteran Udi, who is desperate to start his life
over again by moving to Britain, and Daniel, an
apathetic north London banker who wants to
change his life by making aliyah.

The story is interspersed with the bittersweet

tale of star-crossed teenagers Dara, who comes
from a Jewish background, and Kaseem, a Muslim. As the story unfolds, it becomes clearer how
their relationship impacts on the others.
Wayne, the daughter of American composer
and music producer Jeff Wayne, tells me the
seeds for Chains of Sand were first sown in 2006.
That year, her husbands cousin, an IDF soldier,
moved from Israel to London, while one of her
close friends moved to Israel.
I found this flow of humanity really intriguing,
she tells me. When people emigrate, its often at
a moment of either great hope or desperation
and I was just really interested in what propelled
those journeys.
The year 2006 also marked Israels war with
Lebanon and Wayne noticed an increasing sense
of conflation between Israeli and Jewish.
She adds that it was the first time she felt the
Jewish element of ones identity had become
more salient than it was before.
Those feelings remained bubbling under the
surface until the next conflict in 2014, when she
decided to address the issue in earnest. That said,
her book is not a mere vehicle for her own opinions and Wayne makes a point of stressing she
wanted to show viewpoints from all sides.
I ask if she was concerned that her fictional account of the Israel-Gaza conflict would in itself
cause a stir among her readers.
When it comes to this conflict, there are always going to be people who hate what you say
and then there will be people who will say you
havent said it strongly enough, replies Wayne.
So you always risk offending some people. In
my book, there are characters from all sides of the
spectrum and there will probably be some my
readers dont agree with.
But thats the nature of this conflict and that

was one of the most attractive things I found in

confronting it.
Within the political framework of her story,
Chains of Sand also revolves around questions of
identity and destiny. Udi is shown as a man conflicted between what he must do as a vessel of
state against his own personal beliefs. On the one
hand, he feels lack of power over his life and yet,
as a soldier, he fears he has too much.
For him its about finding a balance and taking
back control of his life, adds Wayne. Similarly,
north-west Londoner Dan fights the comfortable
yet passionless life he lives as a Jew in Britain.
He has this pressure of feeling hes not as worthy as his grandparents, who are survivors, or as
successful as his father, who made his career from
nothing. He looks around and sees all these people who are passionate about things and he wants
to feel that same passion thats what he catches
a taste of in Israel, a much younger, dynamic
country where he can really make a mark.
While Waynes novel certainly references her
experience of living in north-west London, she
was very conscious to make her characters sufficiently different from herself.
In a sense, I was glad I chose a male character,
as that added enough sense of distance for me.
My last book featured three female protagonists,
all from totally different backgrounds, ages and
ethnicities. This shift of writing in a different gender was much more of a challenge to me.
However, it was also important to her that the
female voice is heard as well, and Waynes novel
shifts between different narrative voices of both
genders throughout the story.
The married mother-of-two, who jests that she
snatches hours when I can to work on her writing between caring for her young children, says
she feels proud of her latest work and was propelled by the critical acclaim she received for her

Jemma Waynes book sets out to show views

debut novel, After Before, which made the longlist for the Baileys Womens Prize for Fiction and
the Guardians Not The Booker Prize.
She adds: I was surprised and so happy, particularly with the Baileys listing, because thats always been the prize Ive looked to when I want a
recommendation for a good book. To be listed
among those writers was a proud moment. It had
been a long road to get my first novel published,
so it really made me feel validated as an author.

The cats and dogs of war

Author Miriam
Halahmy has
based her latest
childrens book
on the shocking
story of Britains
pet cull during
the war, writes
Alex Galbinski

s an author with a passion for history,

Miriam Halahmy is quite used to
translating snippets of past
events or current affairs into storylines in her books. But for her latest book, The Emergency Zoo,
she was shocked to uncover
the little-known subject of the
hundreds of thousands of
household pets that were put
down in 1939.
I read a news article on
my phone just over a year
ago which said that 750,000
pets were put to sleep at the
outbreak of the Second World
War. I was absolutely astonished, she recalls.
I have read enormous amounts
about the 20th century, but I had
never heard this story.
As she started her research, she learned about
Bonzos War, a book by Clare Campbell about
pets in the 1939-45 conflict but, she says: There
was so much more to find out and this led to a
great deal of research in books, online and reading the diary entries in the Mass Observation
archive at the British Museum.
She saw immediately the potential for a novel
in a terrible episode in British history and decided
it would make a wonderful childrens book.
The Emergency Zoo begins the weekend before war is declared after a summer when people
were already putting their pets down.
It centres around the stories of 12-year-old
friends Tilly and Rosy, who try to outwit their families and the authorities by hiding their pets in a
derelict hut in the woods. Soon, other children
start bringing their own pets rabbits, guinea
pigs and hamsters, turning the girls secret den
into the emergency zoo.
Halahmys research was very specific. I was
searching for tiny details about what was happening on each day in the lead-up to the outbreak of
war, she explains. But the history books dont
focus on those final days of August, so I turned
to the Mass-Observation diaries and I was able to
read entries for each day.
She discovered that, at 11.15 am on Sunday, 3
September 1939, the entire country listened to
the prime minister state on the radio that Britain
was now at war with Germany. Immediately after
the broadcast, the air-raid sirens sounded and
everyone went down to the shelters.

Above: Rescue workers taking care of a dog amid the rubble left by a bombing raid on Britain during the Second World War; left, author
Miriam Halahmy included the experiences of a Kindertransport child in her book

According to accounts at
the time, when the all-clear
sounded people literally picked
up their pets and set off for the
vet to have them put down, Halahmy explains.
There were queues down the
streets up to half a mile long. It is an astonishing fact of that first morning of war.
I very much enjoy this kind of research, winkling out each tiny fact which can really help to
bring the period alive.
I ask Halahmy, who has recently become a
grandmother, how she managed to translate the
terrible episode into a story for children without
terrifying them (the book is aimed at readers
aged from eight).
She tells me: My book asks the question:
When the war comes, who will save the animals?
This is the cover strapline and I think that, in this
way, although there are some difficult scenes in
the book, the story will be seen by the children as
positive; a call to action and an example of how
ordinary people can do extraordinary things when
faced with a dilemma.
The killing of pets went on for a week, during
which an estimated 750,000 of them mainly cats
and dogs were put down. Many other animals
were destroyed too, including pet monkeys,
caged birds and all the poisonous animals housed
in London Zoo.
Halahmy found out that the government circulated a pamphlet and announced on the radio
that pets would not be allowed in public shelters.
The pamphlet read: If you cannot place them in
the care of neighbours, it is really kindest to have
them destroyed.
It was believed that pets could not be fed
once rationing started and they wouldnt cope
with gas and bomb attacks. But the public came
to their senses at the end of that week and the

cull slowed to a halt, she explains.

In a nation of pet lovers, it seems that everyone quietly forgot about it and it has only just
resurfaced in the past couple of years.
There is also a Jewish angle in the book. I
read an extraordinary letter from two Jewish children with a place on the Kindertransport, explains Halahmy, who lives in Golders Green.
They wrote to the Dumb Friends League in
London, begging it to take their dog, Barbara.
They wrote saying We are very poor refugee
children and we love Barbara who would die if
we abandoned her.
The league went ahead and paid for the
quarantine of the childrens dog and the dogs
of many other refugees too, recognising how
important the pets would be to people who
had lost everything.
Halahmy really wanted to feature a storyline including a Kindertransport child and a
dog and was keen to interview a former
Kinder to ensure she had original information. She met Ann Kirk, who was born in
Germany and who let her read her mothers
letters (her husband Bob, who was also a
former Kind, translated them for her); Halahmy included extracts from these letters
in her novel.
I have imagined the story of the two children,
Lotte and Rudi, but they are influenced by the
story of a survivor I knew personally and also my
own recent visit to Frankfurt, which I made their
home town, she says.
Halahmy, who is the author of eight books
one for adults, two for children and five for young
adults hopes her readers will simply enjoy
reading about pets, their care, the fun they can
be and how important they are to their owners.
She also wanted to show modern children how
their counterparts in the 1930s had so much more
freedom. They would say goodbye to their fam-

ilies after breakfast and not return until teatime.

But I also show how much stricter parents were in
those days. Woe betide anyone who was late for
tea! she laughs.
I hope my book will convey the message that
children are really very capable at tackling serious
problems and although my solutions are imagined, they show how resourceful children can be.
Emergency Zoo by Miriam Halahmy is published by
Alma Books, priced at 6.99, and is out on 26 May

2 TRAVEL

JUST BARGING ALONG

Mark Silver swaps luxury cruise liners for

a peaceful meander in southern France

he sun was shining, the scenery superb and, even though the Jews
were being blamed yet again, it
could not possibly spoil our good mood
as we stood in the pretty town of Narbonne, southern France.
You see, our tour guide was taking us
back some 700 years and explaining
how the Jews were accused of poisoning
the water in the river and causing the infamous Black Death, no less.
If you thought the conspiracy theorists
who claimed Princess Diana was
bumped off had lost the plot, that was
nothing compared to the nonsense
being spouted back in 1348.
But I've heard dozens of stories of
anti-Semitism during my travels around
Europe, so this was nothing new.
What was different about this trip was
my mode of transport. Normally I do my
exploring via those big cruise lines. I'm
an avid seafarer with more than 25 voyages behind me.
However, on this occasion my wife
and I had abandoned ship and were
travelling by barge along the pretty
Canal du Midi.

Now, if your first thoughts are that a

barge may be slumming it a bit compared to those fancy ships, then think
again. The Enchant, part of European
Waterways impressive fleet, is the embodiment of luxury and will give you an
experience to remember for a lifetime.
Its a beautiful boat and offers the sort
of service you would expect in a topnotch hotel, plus an intimacy thats impossible to replicate on a large liner.
The vessel accommodates eight passengers and there were just four others
on our canal adventure. If you like welltravelled, interesting and charming people, you will hit it off.
While enjoying their company, you
are completely pampered by a
supremely talented French chef by the
name of Sylvain, plus two hostesses
who cannot do enough for you and
your own personal tour guide, Matthew.
Meantime, the all-important skipper,
Elie, takes you along the narrow waters
with the sort of precision that impressed
even Jeff, a fellow passenger and former
captain with the US Navy.
Our choice of canal and boat was

Enchant in full relaxing cruise mode, watched enviously by passers-by on the bridge

faultless but there are lots of other voyages to choose as European Waterways
boasts 18 barges and covers a large expanse of the continent.
The Canal du Midi was first opened
in 1681, so todays explorers are really
stepping back in time as they venture
along with spectacular towns and villages a stones throw away.
You are even able to tell your guide
if you fancy, say, 15 more minutes at a
particular location or perhaps a quick
stroll around a local market that was not
on the original itinerary.
Those more familiar regimented
coach excursions with 40 other guests
will be a massive struggle for me now
after this treat.
From start to finish, whether on the
barge or on land, nothing was too much
trouble. I make no apologies for the
clich in that Mrs Silver and I really felt
part of a family.
We had avoided busy airports and allowed the train to take the strain ahead
of this six-night delight. Our meeting
point of Narbonne was a fine start and
full of interest, led by its most impressive sight , the former cathedral, where
work began in 1272.
The building was never completed
because the Jews, who were lending the
money for the work, were expelled. No
doubt many blamed them for that too!
We returned to this town with tour
guide Matthew during the week to
enjoy its colourful indoor market, from
where our guide collected an order of
the freshest fish arranged by chef to
be cooked for lunch that day and it was
indeed delicious.
Life on board is as relaxing as can be
and you cruise along at less than a couple of miles an hour, enjoying the
peaceful surroundings, chatting to others on board and feasting on Sylvain's
magnificent creations.
Enchant has an open kitchen so you
can watch chef work his magic and, in my

wife's case, take notes in a

bid to prepare similar fare
back home (weeks later,
why am I still waiting,
dear?). If you want to burn
off some calories, you can
cycle along a towpath or
enjoy a stroll.
Either before or after
lunch, Matthew drives
you to a local place of interest; often an historical
sight, maybe a vineyard
for wine-tasting or, in this Top, Enchant on the Canal du Midi; above, Mark Silver

SAIRA KHAN, a former contestant on Alan Sugars The

revealed that she has given
permission to her husband to
sleep with another woman, as
she has lost her sex drive.
What does the Torah say
about this?
Our great ancestor Abraham nearly lost his wife Sarah
to the Philistine king, who was
forced to return her untouched by divine intervention. Abraham did not
discover his wife Sarahs
beauty until they approached
Egypt, a country which prized
foreign looks.
For her part, our holy matriarch Sarah at first doubted
even a divinely delivered message that she would bear a
child from her husband.
She suggested that he

Sedra:

Bechukkot
BY RABBI SHAUL

ROSENBLATT

THERE IS a story heard from a colleague of

mine, Rabbi Aryeh Sampson. that I love to tell
on the topic of land ownership.
Two wealthy Jewish men once lived in a town
in Eastern Europe. They were great friends, but
one day they entered into a dispute over a small
piece of land.
Each one felt that it belonged to him and
slowly, over time, the issue came between them.
For men as wealthy as they, it was such an insignificant piece of land, but each was insistent
that it belonged to him and the dispute grew
more and more unpleasant.
After a while, they no longer talked to each
other, no longer acknowledged each other and
eventually they became bitter enemies.
Although neither wished to, members of the
community convinced them to go the local
rabbi and have him resolve the argument.
Each one presented his case and the rabbi listened carefully.
The rabbi asked to go and see the land in
question.
When they got there, it was clear that the land
was worth very little and in relation to their portfolios, was completely meaningless.
The rabbi said to them that he could not de-

timacy. Farming out intimacy

to another bedroom renders
the home no longer worthy.
Problems at the office resulting in a lost sex drive are
not a valid reason in a spiritual
home to replace spousal intimacy with the attentions either of a concubine or a
prostitute.
It may seem magnanimous
of Saira to have accorded this
leeway to her husband, but
even if her husband were
never to fall in love with any
other woman, hed have to
demonstrate the passion of
his love to someone he
doesnt love.
That is the tragedy of a
dead marriage, one where
spouses begin to avoid each
other consistently, either emotionally or sexually.
Men and women are lifelong apprentices in marriage,
and delegating away responsibility to seek intimacy is
equivalent to telling ones
spouse that they are, in the
words of the Apprentice
seeker fired!
Ariel Abel is rabbi of the Liverpool
Old Hebrew Congregation

cide who was right and in a case like this, the

best thing was to ask the land itself.
Both thought he was crazy as they watched
him put his ear to the ground and listen carefully.
He stood up nodding knowingly.
The land has resolved this issue for us, he
explained to them.
Each was eager to hear. The land told me,
said the rabbi, that each of you thinks that this
land belongs to you.
The truth of the matter is, however, that one
day soon both of you will actually belong to it.
Perspective is so important in life. We can
so easily find ourselves swept away on a tide of
pettiness and lose all sense of what is truly important to us.
Land is never more important than friendship,
in the same way as money is never more important than a spouse, nor work more important
than children.
Its a sobering thought that one day every one
of us will belong to the earth.
With that in mind, ask yourself if those things
which are frustrating you right now are really all
that important.
Business is not going well; your house is falling
apart; people arent respecting you.
Will any of these things really matter in five,
let alone 50 years?
Life is just too precious and fleeting to waste
on our own pettiness.

of Gibraltar and the Rock of Israel

BY ILANA

EPSTEIN
REBBETZENS FROM across the Commonwealth
were last week brought together for an intensive,
36-hour leadership training programme in Gibraltar
that focused on the complementary but crucial
communal role we play in contrast to that of our
husbands no less important, but with its own set
of unique challenges. The programme was devised
by Valerie Mirvis, wife of Chief Rabbi Ephraim
Mirvis, together with Rachel Shababo, director of
the Chief Rabbis Centre for Rabbinic Excellence.
After spending a few hours exploring this old
English colony, the highlight of our trip awaited.
We were charmed by the articulate and multitalented Levy Attias, who spoke with sensitivity
about interfaith dialogue and the work he has
been doing for decades in bridging the gap between the diverse faiths in Gibraltar.
We were also introduced to Alice Mascarenhas, deputy editor of the Gibraltar Chronicle,
and Puisne Judge Karen Prescott of the Gibraltarian Supreme Court, two inspirational professional women, who sat together with Valerie to
discuss the challenges leadership affords.
They spoke of responsibility, bravery and determination qualities that our rebbetzens have
in spades but it was imperative that we hear it
directly from women who, through struggles of
their own, held fast to their values.

We were then joined at dinner by 180 of the

communitys women. Considering that the Jewish community of Gib numbers just 600 strong,
including the men and children, it would be fair
and humbling to say that the entire cohort of
Jewish Gibraltarian women dined with us.
Our next session was a perfect example of Valeries expertise in managing change. Some of
the rebbetzens were dispatched into the primary
school and the girls high school to teach the students, to run a training session for the Judaic
studies educators. The success of the Torah study
was only rivalled by the magnificence of the interior of the synagogue. We also visited the Shaarei
Shamayim Synagogue, which was built in 1740.
Chana, the mother of the prophet Samuel, is
the first person we know of who prayed to God
silently, though her lips formed the words. She is
the first one to call God Tzur Yisrael, the Rock
of Israel. The Jews of Gibraltar tell of a legend that
the peninsula of Gibraltar, was once attached to
the Land of Israel and with the shift of land masses
it attached itself to the edge of Spain. Its inherent
connection to the land of our forefathers makes it
a safe haven for the Jews who call it home.
These people who, like their ancestors, live
among their close friends and family, surrounded
by natures hard elements; rock, wind and ocean,
feel the warm embrace of the prayer to the Rock
of Israel God who lives within their midst.

How should Jewish prayer evolve TOUR CAN BE THE

to reflect the modern world?
PERFECT TONIC
BY RABBI PETE

TOBIAS

WE HAVE often been referred to as

the People of the Book. Its a reference to the wealth of literature
that underpins our tradition: the
Talmud, the Codes and, at the
heart of it all, the Hebrew Bible
which begins with the Torah.
The book were most likely to use
in our everyday or, for some, every
year practice of Judaism is a prayer
book. But words recited, chanted or
sung from a prayer book have not always been the sole means by which
Jews seek to communicate with God.
The earliest form of human communication with the Almighty was
sacrifice. Our ancient ancestors
adopted that practice, but with one
significant adjustment they removed human beings from the list
of offerings.
It was only once the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans
that sacrifice came to an end and
words were used instead to express
the deepest Jewish yearnings and
aspirations.
It was several hundred years before the order of the liturgy became
fixed and, in the centuries that followed, other elements were introduced.
The words were put to music, giving a new dimension to worship,
while others used what was in the
prayer book as a basis for mystical
contemplation.
After the end of the 18th century

Reform and Liberal Judaism

emerged, changing and adapting not
only the prayers but also the environment in which they were voiced.
The liturgy was rewritten to remove references to Temple worship
and accompanied by instrumental
music.
The layout of synagogues was altered: the central Bimah of Orthodox
tradition was removed, and rabbis
addressed congregations in their
everyday language from pulpits.
In the 20th century, Progressive
developments included mixed seating and regular reworking of the language and expression of prayer.
Now we must continue to evolve a
form of worship suitable for the 21st
century, seeking new ways to make
prayer relevant and meaningful by
using new ideas and technology.
As the use of language changes,
so does theological understanding
and the religious perceptions and
spiritual needs of thoughtful congregants and our Jewish worship
must change with them.
All of this will be considered at
the forthcoming Liberal Judaism Biennial Conference, as we consider
what might come next in the ongoing development of the Jewish
relationship with God.
At the same time as investigating
the possibilities of a new siddur, delegates at the Biennial Conference
will also be contemplating other
ways we can worship. Its time to
think outside the book.

Synagogue Elstree and a former chair of

MY JEWISH

HERO
MY JEWISH hero is a feminist, a
socialist and an activist a
woman for whom the word tireless might have been invented.
But before reading Rachel
Holmes biography of Eleanor
Marx as part of our book club at
Kingston Liberal Synagogue, I
did not even know that the third
and most-beloved daughter of
Karl Marx and Jenny von Westphalen even existed.
Eleanor was integral to the
social democratic movement of
the late 19th century and the
early days of the Labour Party.
Without her, so many things
we take for granted would have
taken much longer to come

about. We can thank her and her

contemporaries for the eighthour working day, outlawing of
child labour, access to equal education, freedom of expression,
trade unions, universal suffrage

JUNE IS hands-down the worst time of the

year, according to a great many RSY-Netzer
members.
As May draws to a close and June brings
in summer, most of us are excited to welcome the warm weather.
For many members of RSY-Netzer, however, June means just one thing: exams.
Study leave can be boring, exhausting
and stressful, but in the midst of cramming
frenzies and library sessions, RSY-Netzer
members are prepping for more than AQA
boards and dissertation deadlines. They are
also getting geared up for their summer on
RSY-Netzer events.
For our 16-year-old participants going
through GCSEs, the end of exam season is
in sight and with it comes the excitement of
Israel Tour.
Having the chance to walk out of your final
exam and into the airport only a few weeks
later is exhilarating. And that is only the
start, as theres still three-and-a-half weeks in
Israel to enjoy.
Every day on Israel Tour is jam-packed
with different sites and encounters.
From hiking through the beautiful Galil region to visiting social-action projects and
diving in to the Mediterranean, Israel Tour
offers a wealth of diverse experiences.
It is the perfect way to relax after a pesky
study leave.
Throughout Israel Tour, our participants
will have the chance to think about their relationship with Israel and what it means to
be a Reform Zionist, exploring and connecting with beautiful places and wonderful experiences along the way.
Many of our members view Israel Tour as
a formative experience, bringing time away
from home and the chance to develop personal values and a Jewish identity.

Frieze selects Kark Marxs
tireless daughter, Eleanor
and democratically selected
parliamentary representation,
regardless of class, religion, gender or ethnicity.
She organised, wrote, authored, essayed, researched,
fundraised, lectured, taught, tutored, translated, acted, produced, befriended, promoted,
led, supported, critiqued,
spoke, rallied and founded.
Yet its not just in social action
that she excelled. Without her,
our appreciation of Ibsen, for
which she taught herself Norwegian to translate his work, would
have been delayed.
The same is true of the introduction of Madame Bovary to

the English-speaking world

she was the first to translate
Flauberts seminal novel. She
and her parents helped to foster
the revival of Shakespeare.
Although not a practising
Jew, she took pride in her Jewish antecedents, posthumously
conferring Jewish identity on her
father and speaking out against
anti-Semitism and the persecution of working-class Jews in
Londons East End.
Discovering Eleanor Marx reassured me that the campaigning, writing and activism I have
been doing for the past two
years is the right path for me to
be following.

Dear Judy
Thank you for being in touch and I hope you will in fact have
a smooth pregnancy. Women can experience a broad range
of physical symptoms throughout pregnancy and it is reasonable to follow up concerns at any stage. An example:
many women experience some spotting or very light bleeding during pregnancy. Bleeding should always be investigated. There are several options through which one can do
this; the first is your GP or midwife. Another option is to
contact an Early Pregnancy Unit. Your local hospital may or
may not have such a unit and some units accept walk-in patients who have self-referred.

Dear Sue
I frequently hear strange hissing in my head and ears. My wife
says she cant hear it. Its driving me mad! Im worrying, not
sleeping and feel desperate.
Eddie
Dear Eddie
You may have a common condition known as tinnitus. People
describe the sounds as hissing, buzzing, shrieking, throbbing,
ringing and at varying high or low pitches.
Try not to worry experiencing it can feel maddening, but its
usually harmless.
Tinnitus can be triggered by ear infections, hearing loss, exposure to loud sounds, medication and stress. So the first thing
you must do is to visit your GP who will arrange a scan, the results of which should reassure you that there is nothing more
sinister going on.
Although there is no cure for tinnitus, we can help you to cope
with it. The key is to become less aware of its symptoms, which
will reduce your distress.
Book a tinnitus retraining session with our hearing therapist.
You will receive free advice, tips on how to manage practically
and emotionally and try out equipment to distract and ease
your mind. Tinnitus can really get you down but people say
retraining does help them to cope.
The London Tinnitus Support Group gives support and exchanges tips and ideas. It next meets on Monday 20 June and
Monday 19 September from 6.30-8pm at JDA.
If youd like to talk, please call Gabrielle on 020 8446 0214.

The pros and cons of

travelling the MiFi way
Dear Maxi,
Ill be doing quite a bit of travelling overseas business
and personal. I need constant access to email, internet and
social media. Someone in my office mentioned I should
look into buying a MiFi device. What would you suggest?
Nathalie

Dear Nathalie
A MiFi device is definitely something you should consider and
can be either purchased or rented the right option depends
on your personal situation.
MiFi devices are available SIM-free, which will be an advantage
if you travel to multiple countries as you can purchase a SIM
card in the local country and top it up with data.
Positives: you own the MiFi device and you can use it in any
country, including the UK. Negatives: this option is more expensive initially and you will need to find a mobile store in the
country you are travelling to in order to top up the data.
The second option is to rent the MiFi device. Positives: low initial cost and the dealership takes care of everything. Negatives: you do not own the device, so you are responsible for
making sure nothing happens to it.
RCUK branches in London and Manchester are able to provide both these services and will also assist you by looking at
your current mobile tariff and discussing the countries you are
planning to visit.
The reason for this is there may be other, more relevant options that you should consider, so please do contact us for
more information on 020 8815 4111.

Im so grateful for your brilliant service and proactive advice;

Redbridge warm up
for cup final in style
Andrew

SHERWOOD
Raiders dynamic
duo call it a day
THEY SAY all good things come to an end, and thats certainly the
case after Rob Richman and Jonathan Green announced they were
stepping down from their roles as joint-managers of North London
Raiders A. Double-double winners, theyve produced a side which
has simply been untouchable over the past couple of seasons. Former Real Sosobad manager Daniel Shafron, who was recently
turned down for the Chelsea post seriously will have the unenviable task of stepping into their footsteps. With David Garbacz
similarly relinquishing his role at Hendon, and with possible other
managerial movements in the offering, next seasons Premier Division could have a very different look and feel to it.
SPEAKING OF Raiders and bringing the curtain down, their Masters
side take part in the final game of the Jewish football season on
Sunday when they take on Redbridge B in the final of the MGBSFL/Masters Invitational Cup. Dan Levys looking to end the season
with some silverware, having been left disappointed with his side
not retaining their title, while Redbridge warmed up for the game
in ominous style by emphatically beating FC Team B and denying
them runners-up spot in Division One. The final act of the 2015/16
season gets underway at Silver Jubilee Park at 10am.
IT IS INDEED a sad day in sport when politics intervenes and sees
an international wheelchair tennis team refuse to compete against
an Israeli one. Reportedly pressured by their local Olympic Committee, Moroccos team failed to turn up for their match against Israel. The sad state of affairs was best summed up by Boaz Kramer,
CEO of the Israel Sport Center for the Disabled, who said: Wheelchair tennis was contaminated today by politics, and we, players
and teams, should make a clear stand and make sure it stays ONLY
about the amazing virtues of wheelchair sports.

THE VOICE OF JEWISH SPORT

REDBRIDGE B player-manager
Sam Rank believes his side
proved a point after defeating FC
Team B 4-1 to deny them runnersup spot in Division One.
Dean Ben Yosefs double, coupled with strikes from Brad Gayer
and Joe Jordan saw them to the
win, though Rank was just as delighted with the statement his
side made on the pitch. He said:
We proved a very big point
today that football games
should only be played on a football pitch and not in the classroom.
They tried their very best to
get the replayed game awarded
to them without even playing the
game, which I know caused the
League committee additional
and unwanted stress.
The build-up to the game was
very heated with a lot of interesting comments made. However,
on the football pitch, there was
only going to be one winner. We
conducted our game plan brilliantly, were switched on from the
first minute and dominated
throughout. I hope they will learn
from this they cant beat us on
the pitch.
Looking ahead to this weekends MGBSFL/Masters Invitational Cup Final against North
London Raiders Masters, he said:
This performance was a brilliant
way to prepare for it and also
gives me a selection headache for
next week, with 16 great players
to choose from, but a selection
headache I will enjoy.
The boys have been brilliant
since I have taken over, and a
pleasure to work with. I really
hope we can finish the season
with silverware, as the boys deserve it so much.
Teams player-manager Mitch
Young scored their consolation
goal, and said: We were severely
understrengthed today and the
performance was very much of an

manager Jeff Gotch said: We

were up against it at times with a
very depleted 11, but the battle
the boys showed was unreal. A
draw may have been the fairer result but well take it and now start
prepping for pre-season which
starts in early July
We have won three, drawn
two and lost only once to the topthree sides who will probably all
go up, so there is a good basis
there. Its been a long season dating back to last July with no less
than 34 games played. Next season we will be going for one thing
only and that is top spot and
with the likes of Joel Lassman,
Lawrence Bloom and Jason
Shoffman all signing up, things
are looking good.

After a poor first half we regrouped and performed admirably in the second half.
Redbridge deserved the win and
are a good footballing side, however their manager has shown

Some of Redbridges comments before and after the game

Morocco forfeit Israel Adams record swim Judo star lands one
wheelchair tennis tie
of his best ever wins

THE COACH of Israels wheelchair tennis team labelled last

Thursday as a sad day for
sport after their Moroccan opponents refused to play them in
a match at the World Team Cup
wheelchair tennis event in Tokyo.
The local Moroccan Paralympic Committee reportedly ordered their players not to turn up
for the match, which left Nimrod
Bichler to say: This is a sad day

for sports, and an even sadder

day for Paralympic sports. Politics have mixed with sports in the
past, but Paralympic sports were
always different.
The wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed
Cup, Israel beat Hungary and
lost to Malaysia (pictured above)
in Pool D. Following Morrocos
forfeit, they then lost 3-0 to
Poland to finish in sixth place.

SWIMMER
ADAM
Warner recorded his
fastest time at the European
Aquatics
Championships

meaning hes now

ranked tenth in Europe and the world.
Finishing 10th in the
800m free and 17th in
the 400m free at the
London Aquatics Centre, he said: Im very
pleased with my performance, this year
has been very tough
as I havent been able
to train to my full potential, but I achieved
both season bests.
My pool season has
been tough this year, but
to achieve what I have in
such a short time, I
couldnt be happier.

He now switches attention to the start of the

open water season, which
begins with a 5k in Lake
Windermere in the Great
North Swim.

ISRAELI JUDO star Ori Sasson

claimed one of the best wins
of his career when he won silver at the 2016 World Judo
Masters championships in
Mexico.
Taking part in the final Rio
2016 qualification event, with
Sasson already assured of his
place in Rio, he beat Hungarian Barna Bor in his semi-final
in five minutes, with a drop
shoulder throw.
However, up against Romanian Daniel Natea in the final,
whom the Israeli had never lost to,
Natea went ahead after just five
seconds, before moving into the
osaekomi hold for 15 seconds,
with Sasson unable to escape a
kesa-gatame hold.
Sasson said: It was one of the
most significant achievements of

my career so far and of course, Im

always happy to represent this
country every single time.
Im proud to be part of a team
of such quality, and with my team,
including coach Oren Smadja, Gil
Ofer and my personal trainers,
with a clear mind, we can prepare
for the Summer Olympics in Rio.

DOUBLE
TROUBLE?

End of an era as Raiders dream team quits

after back-to-back league and cup wins
BY ANDREW

SHERWOOD

Raiders lift their second consecutive Premier Division title (above), Green and Richman with the Cyril Anekstein Cup (top)

ROB RICHMAN and Jonathan Green have

stepped down as managers of North London Raiders A bringing to an end one
of the most successful partnerships in
Jewish football.
The pair led the side to an historic doubledouble the first in Jewish football, and were
only 90 minutes away from securing an incredible league and cup treble this season.
Being replaced by Daniel Shafron, who has
been in charge of Division One side Real
Sosobad for the past couple of seasons, Richman says he believes the time is right to step
aside. Its a massive wrench to step down,
Ive managed the side for nearly 10 seasons
and have enjoyed every season immensely,
he said. Throughout my time weve tried to
play the game in the right way both on and
off the pitch and weve always tried to be a
credit to the great league we play in. As sad
as I am about stepping down, I know its the
right time, weve achieved more than I ever
could imagine and I cant thank the players
who represent this brilliant club enough.
Believing hes leaving the side in safe
hands, he said: The time is right to hand
over to Dan. He takes over a team who have
been the standout side for the past two years.
I fully believe Dan will fit in perfectly with the
Raiders way and will brilliantly take the team

Levy suffers debut

defeat to Serbia

Sues prince charming!

An Invictus Games athlete says she had to pinch herself after claiming a bronze
medal and meeting Prince Harry. Sue Warner, a member of Kingston Liberal
Synagogue, finished third in the swimming 50m backstroke for over 55-yearolds. She said: I still cant believe it. Everyone was cheering so loudly. I had to
pinch myself that it was for me. Im so happy. It was a moment to cherish.

ELISHA LEVYS reign as the

manager of the Israeli national team got off to a losing
start on Tuesday night.
Taking on Serbia in a
friendly international, ahead
of the start of their 2018
World Cup qualifying campaign, goals from Chelsea
defender Branislav Ivanovic,
Nemanja Milunovic and
Dusan Tadic condemned
them to a 3-1 defeat. Eran
Zahavis penalty had drawn
them level early in the second half.
Levy (pictured) said: We
arrived at the game after a
long and exhausting season.
The players were committed
throughout the game and I
dont think the result reflected the differences be-

tween the teams. We came

back to draw 1-1, and that
makes the loss all the more
disappointing.
Despite the disappointment, there were a lot of
good things during the
game. We will find strength
and try to continue to improve in the future.

onwards and upwards.

Green said: Its been an absolute privilege to manage this group of boys for the
last two years and its no lie to say that every
single Wednesday evening and Sunday
morning has been enjoyable.
Weve enjoyed unprecedented success
over this time, but both Rob and I feel like its
the perfect time for Dan to take over. Were
both of the opinion that its a great appointment and have no doubt that he will lead the
team to more continued success and to remain as the dominant team in Jewish football.
Shafron said: I had two great years with
Real Sosobad and this is now a perfect next
step. Its a huge honour to be asked to be their
next manager and Im delighted that Rob and
Greeny saw me as the right person for the job.
I have the greatest respect for everything
theyve done; to be double winners two seasons in a row is historic and a massive achievement. Their boots are big ones to fill!
This squad is undoubtedly the best in
Jewish football. The commitment of the boys,
their work ethic and desire to win was a huge
factor in my decision to join and Im looking
forward to getting started and meeting up
with the current group.
The hard work begins now to defend our
titles, our aim will be to win every competition
we enter next season. Its very possible and I
know it will be a huge challenge, but one that
Im very excited to take on.
