Packet #1: Hitler

Assertion 1 Idea: The Rise of Hitler

Question 1: What was the state of Germany prior to Hitler coming to power?
EV: When the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, Jews were living in every country in
Europe. A total of roughly nine million jews lived in the twenty-one countries that would be
occupied by Germany during World war 2. By the end of the war, two out of every three of
theses jews would be dead, and European Jewish life would change forever ( Bachrach #2).
In the early 1930s, the mood in Germany was grim. The worldwide economic depression had
hit the country especially hard, and millions of people were out of work. Still fresh in the minds
of many was Germany's humiliating defeat fifteen years earlier during World war 1, and
Germans lacked confidence in their weak government, known as the Weimar Republic
( Bachrach #8).
Your second quote looks good. The Weimar Republic is important. Your later boxes
mentioned the Treaty of Versailles. How did that hamstring Germany after WW1?

Question 2: How did Hitler gain support of the people?
1. EV:Hitler was a powerful and spellbinding speaker who attracted a wide
following of Germans desperate for change. He promised the disenchanted a better life
and a new and glorious Germany. The Nazis appealed especially to the unemployed,
young people, and members of the lower middle class (small store owners, office
employees, craftsmen, farmers) (Bachrach #8).
2. Its not about how he got the government behind him, but the citizens.
Did he promise them anything? Did he get them to turn on others in order to get
them to fall in behind him?

6. Question 3: How did Hitler solidify power? (if you dont know what solidify means,
google it)

7. EV: Bit by bit, organization and structure were put in place, and by July 1921
Hitler was very evidentually its leader. He set out a program of twenty-five demands,
including the abolition of the treaty of Versailles, the establishment of germany until all
germans in possession of enough land to feed all its people, and the ending of the
civil rights for jews. (Freeman 13)

9. The Nazi party whipped up support among the thousands of angry and
disillusioned young men who roamed the streets of Munich. The storm troopers, or SA,
were formed in October 1921 as the shock troops of the Nazis. They wore brown shirts
and modeled themselves on the Freikorps. They were used to keep order at meetings.
(Freeman 14)

11. He abolished all other political parties as well as all labor unions. In addition, he
named himself Fuhrer, the leader of Germany. He was the first modern leader to understand
the importance of the mass media, creating a propaganda ministry that controlled the press. In
addition, he established large secret police force that used terror as its weapon to maintain
Nazi dominance (Biography in context #5).

Body Paragraph 2:
Assertion 2 Idea: Hitlers maintenance of power
Question 1: How did Hitler improve/take steps to improve the economy?
EV: The boycott of Jewish businesses and the Nazi-led mass meetings were supposed to
show that the German people were angry at the Jews and were demanding that the
government take action against them. Almost immediately after the boycott, the Nazi
government began passing a series of laws and official orders targeting the jews. (Feldman
#67)
Later that month, another law removed Jewish doctors from the National Health Service. A
law passes on April 25,1933, limited the number of Jewish students in a school to 1.5
percent of the total.Other laws and official orders prevented Jews from working as
pharmacist or as newspaper editors and stability limited their access to jobs in the theater
and film industries.
How does this help the economy? What actions did Hitler take to create jobs or lower
unemployment?

Question 2: How did Hitler use his military to maintain control/expand his reign? (if you
dont know what reign means, google it)

EV: Hitlers goal of a strong military was meshed tightly with his desire to regain the territory
Germany had lost in World War 1, especially the land that had become part of Poland. Hitler
also wanted to unite Germany with Austria, where most of the people were Germanspeaking. These goals were readily supported by German nationalist, including most army
officers.( Nationalist believed that loyalty to Germany was more important than anything else
and Germany should be supremely powerful, especially in the military arena.) (Feldman
#102)

Question 3: How did Hitler maintain control over the people/manipulate the people to
maintain control?
EV: On April 7,1933 a law removed mos Jews from government jobs, including teaching in a
public school or university. Any Jew hired from 1914 on was fired, except for Jews who had
fought in the German army in World War 1, or whose father or son had died in that war. The

4
reason for these exceptions as a letter to Hitler from the president of Germany. Paul von
hindenburg, the old commander of the German armies in World War 1. He objected to firing
the Jewish war veterans and survivors. If they were worthy to fight and bleed for Germany,
then they should be considered worthy to continue serving the fatherland in their
profession, he wrote. He did not protest, however; over the treatment of Jews in general.
What was the point of these actions? How did it help manipulate the Germans?

Body Paragraph 3:
Assertion 1 Idea: Hitler fall from power
Question 1: When did things begin to go terribly wrong for Hitler?
EV: Hitler's incarceration in prison in 1924 meant that the outlook for the Nazi party was not
promising. It was banned completely in Bavaria and without strong leadership, it had been
split by internal arguments. (Freeman 18)

Question 2: How did military losses in WWII affect the stability of Hitlers rule?
EV: As the Allies closed in on Germany, Hitler increasingly hoped for a split in the alliance

he had forged against himself. He believed Germany had lost World War I because of the
collapse of the home front and therefore assumed that establishment of a dictatorship and the
systematic killing of all Jews would guarantee victory this time. When the end was near, he
married his mistress and then committed suicide with her (history 15)

Question 3: How did the peoples loss of faith in Hitler affect his rule/control of the country?
EV: Facing these odds, Hitler's military judgment became increasingly erratic. Germany's

military and economic position deteriorated along with Hitler's health. Germany and the Axis
could not sustain Hitler's aggressive and expansive war. In late 1942, German forces failed to
seize the Suez Canal. The German army also suffered defeats at the Battle of Stalingrad and
the Battle of Kursk. On June 6, 1944, the Western Allied armies landed in northern France. As
a result of these significant setbacks, many German officers concluded that defeat was
inevitable and that Hitler's denial would result in the destruction of the country. (biography 23)

Question 4: How does Hitler die?
EV: This last piece of news must only have hardened Hitlers resolve to end his own life and
on 30 April 1945, having eaten lunch, he and Eva entered to their private suite and closed the
doors. Hitler shot himself in the mouth. ( klein 66)
