The Wars Visual Essay

Create a visual essay that represents, identifies, and explores one specific theme
from The Wars.
General Information:
Work independently
You will have time in class to work on your visual essay in class.
Essays will be due at the end of the next class.

1. A clear thesis statement. Your thesis statement must be visible on the visual essay and should have 3 sub topics.
2. Each sub-topic must be accompanied by a visual, drawn or taken from a source visual. Choose symbolic over
literal representations.
3. Each subtopic must also have 2 direct quotations from The Wars. Your quotations must be visible on your visual
essay and they must be cited.
4. Each quote must have a 1 - 2 sentence explanation of its significance.
5. Each visual must have an explanation of how it represents the main idea of your sub-topic. For example: Do not
just state the obvious, e.g. this is a bird; instead explain why the image of a bird is relevant to your thematic topic,
e.g. The bird with its outspread wings represents the protagonists desire for personal freedom.

Your essay will take the form of either poster paper or a regular piece of paper. If you would rather choose to create
your visual essay in an alternative medium (ex. PowerPoint, Prezi, or some other multimedia format) please
discuss it with me first.
