Helios Dual Band Digital Pico Repeaters User Manual Version 3.0A

Thanks for choosing Helios Pico Repeaters, please read the User Manual carefully before using
the repeater.

1. Overview
With the development of mobile communication technology, more and more new communication
technologies (like 4G) will be adopted nowadays. Hence, telecom operators have to handle
multi-system simultaneity and have to face the problem of re-farming spectrum resource for
future.
For operators, they must optimize their network and offer best service to users to improve their
competitive ability. However, 3G signals attenuate severely when traveling through walls, floors,
and windows, leaving more than 40% of all indoor spaces with inadequate coverage and poor data
throughput. Then the operators need a cost-effective solution to resolve such coverage problems
easily and rapidly.
Helios Digital Indoor ICS Pico Repeater is an innovation technology, which is adopting SDR
(Software Define Radio) technology basis on FPGA & DSP (Digital Signal Processing) platform. It
enables on-the-fly filter be changed/upgraded by software without expensive hardware upgrading.
It can support both multi sub-band selective (bandwidth tunable) and/or channel selective
function. Plug & Play basically no need for configuration and free of maintenance.

2. Illuminating
Uplink: Communication link from handset to BTS.
Downlink: Communication link from BTS to handset.
Self-oscillation: An amplified signal being received & amplified again by repeater is called
self-oscillation that will cause components fault.
ICS: The Interference Cancellation System, which can automatically detect and eliminate all
multi-path feedback signals. It can moderate the requirements of isolation between donor antenna
and service antenna.

8. Installation
A. Find the place of the strongest mobile signal on the top or around the building by using the
signal strength indicator on your mobile phone for installing the outdoor donor antenna.
B. Fasten the outdoor donor antenna on the wall or the bracket at suitable place.
C. Fasten the Pico Repeater on the wall or the bracket near the power supply and outdoor
antenna with weatherproof condition and good airiness.
D. Connect the coax cable to the outdoor donor antenna and run the cable from the outdoor
donor antenna to the MS port of the Pico Repeater and fasten it. Thus the connection
between outdoor donor antenna and Pico Repeater has been finished. When choosing the
proper location, ensure that there is adequate vertical distance between the Pico Repeater
and outdoor receiver antenna at least 15ft. Also, keep in mind that performance degrades as
it passes through interior structures (ceiling, walls, etc.).
E. Confirm and fasten the indoor service antenna at suitable place (It is better to install the
indoor ceiling omni-directional antenna in the center of coverage area and panel directional
antenna towards the aimed coverage area.
F. Connect the coax cable to indoor service antenna(s) to MS port of Pico Repeater. If power
splitter is required, firstly make direct connection or connect through feeder cable between
MS port of Pico Repeater and input port of power splitter, and then connect indoor services
antenna(s) to output ports of power splitter.
G. Ensure all connections are correct and lock them. Now, the primary installation is finished.

9. Commissioning

4)

Plug in the power supply cable to the nearest 220VAC mains socket.
Power On.
Check the green PWR LED indicator of Pico Repeater should be light on.
The Digital Dual Band Pico Repeater can run normally after above process. Users can have a
Walk Test or CQT Test to check the working status and compare the coverage performance
between before and after.

Note: Please keep power on and no any operations during firmware upgrading.

10.10.3 Debug Modules

For the modules inside the repeater, such as PA (Power Amplifier) modules and DSP modules etc., their
monitoring interface are all RS485, and each module has built-in flash for storing data and firmware.
Sometimes, because of users improper operation or other unpredictable reasons, the data and
firmware stored inside some modules maybe damaged and results in abnormal operation.
Debug Modules function can help users to restore data and firmware from built-in flash to default
factory settings.

it will return data in Output box.

Output: Reserved debug function for the manufacturer. It can return data according to the command in
Input box which can help manufacturer to check working status and locate fault for specific module.

Restore Flash Datas: Restore the default factory settings from built-in flash. Users should double check
and specify desired module and technology before use it.
Backup Flash Datas: Reserved debug function for the manufacturer to backup the default factory
settings into built-in flash for restoring in the future. Its not recommended to use this function for users
and its better to keep the default factory settings.
Module SN: Display the involved in underlying modules (equipment modules) serial numbers.

10.10.4 Replace NMS Board

In case of NMS board damage, users should change a new one. However, inside the damaged NMS
board, theres a lot of basic information of the repeater. Its better to have a way to copy the information
to the new one.

Replace function can help users to copy the original information from OMC via GPRS to the new NMS
board in case of replacement. This function can be only available while system communication is by
GPRS.
Before replace a new NMS board, please double check the GPRS is enable, and the parameters of APN
Name, GPRS Server and GPRS Port are all in correct status.
