This lesson aims to introduce the concept of five senses, emphasizing the ways to use our senses of
see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. They can explore and utilize their five senses while participating in
class activities.
A continuation of previous lesson/activity
Students can deepen their understanding of each sense through exploration, as well as emphasizing
the ways we use the senses. Children can get excited about science and be known about the beauty of
nature. In addition, the activities can instill childrens thoughts about the environment so that they can
discover the new things through their senses.
The length of this activity is 45 minutes.
Given instructions on read aloud, students can identify and utilize their five senses to explore the
environment.
This activity will enable the child to increase competences in various areas aligning with the
following standards:
New York State Common Core Standards
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part A.3. Demonstrates that he/she understand what they observe.
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part A.5b. Identifies pictures related to words (show me the white

dog).
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part B.RSL.1. With prompting and support, ask and answer about
detail(s) in a text.
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part B.RSL.10. Actively engage in group reading activities with
purpose and understanding.

K-8 Science Scope & Sequence:

Procedures (step by step)

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation):

Begin by reviewing the theme, asking students about what they learned from last lesson. They can
discuss about their thoughts and make predictions about what we going to learn in this lesson. After
the discussion, I will introduce our lesson for today is exploring the functions of our five sense and the
appropriate ways to use them.
Instruction/Mini Lesson:
I will start a read aloud of the book, Cold, Crunchy, Colorful Using Our Senses by Jane
Brocket on the carpet area. This book illustrates different ways people use their five senses to
explore the surrounding environment.
After the read aloud, students are going to go back to their tables, then I will start the activities
with them.
In the first activity, I will display individual color card to the whole class and ask about what
color it is. After I present all colors, I will let the students answer what sense they used to
know about the color of the cards and can we use other senses to notice the color.
In the second activity, I will use the measuring cup and add different amounts of water into
five bottles, 50 ml, 100 ml, 150 ml, 200 ml, and finally 250 ml. Then I will let each student
use a mental stick to hit on the bottles from lowest amount of water to the highest and ask
them if they notice any difference.
In the third activity, I will pour 200 ml of water in three bottles, and add salt, sugar, and
vinegar into each bottle. I will shake them until everything is mixed well and pour them in
random cups. Then I will let students coming up to pick a cup to drink and talk about what
they tasted, neither the water is sweet, salty, or sour.
In the fourth activity, I will separate my students into two groups and tell all of them to put on
an eye mask. I will hold a sliced mango and walk to one group, allowing them to smell the
fruit. My assistant teacher will hold a sliced pineapple and repeat my process. Then we will
switch to another group and repeat the same process. After all students smelled two fruits, I
will ask for their thoughts about what they have smelled.
In the fifth activity, I will let students separate into three groups. Each group is given two shoe
boxes with holds. Each shoe box is containing a soft ball or a rack. Each student is going to
have a chance to put one hand into the shoe box and use their touch sense to feel about the

item. Then they can guess what is inside each box.

Independent Practice:
During the five activities, each student is require to talk about the results for what they seen or make
guesses for what they heard, tasted, smelled, and touched.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps):
Once all students finished their charts, we are going to regroup and sit on the carpet. Students are
going to have a discussion about individuals favorite activity and explain the reason they like it.

Pre-assessment

Assessment of Student Learning

Before starting the activities, I

would ensure every student how
to use their eyes, ears, mouth,
hands, and nose to see, hear,
taste, touch, and smell.

When students used their senses to

feel about the items in every
activity, I will ask them questions
about what they seen, heard, tasted,
smelled, and touched. I can
evaluated their understanding of
appropriate uses for five senses
based on their answers.

identified delays or disabilities

Supporting English Language Learners

For students with delay, they are

allowed to have more time and
work in pairs to discuss about
what they found during the five
activities and the teacher is
using positive reinforcement

Assessment of Childrens
Language Learning
I am going to review the
vocabulary words and
sentences spoken by the
students. Make sure every
student has a chance to
answer my questions
throughout the five activities
and observe their
understanding of the concept
in later lessons.

For English Language Learners, they can use their native language
to express about what they seen, heard, tasted, smelled, and
touched.

throughout the activities.
