Photography Documentary.
26/04/16

Beginning
In the beginning of my documentary I will have an introduction to the topic of
photography and how it has developed throughout the years. They will discuss
the dates of important events as well as speaking about how photography was a
different art in comparison to today, to do this I will include interviews with
professionals in order to give the audience a factual and trustworthy.
Middle
The middle of the documentary will include mostly the history of photography
this way the audience gets a better insight of how things have developed
regarding cameras and now the technology we use in order to improve photos or
to structure them to a specific style. The middle will be more footage in
comparisons to interviews however will include voice overs so the audience can
still follow the topic easily and from a professionals perspective.
EndThe ending of the documentary will summarise the comparisons of photography
past and present. This way the audience has a full understanding of current
methods which is probably the most interesting to up and coming photographers
and/or students. I will include a title sequence thanking those who have given us
footage or who were interviewed for the documentary as well as any music
credits that may be needed.
Format The format of my documentary will be expository as it will directly address the
audience and give promising facts to them. I will be using text and titles in order
to have this direct address to my viewers as well using interviews featuring
experts and professionals in order for the audience to understand that the facts
being given will be correct.
Synopsis
A documentary about the past and present of photography as well as the
development of cameras throughout the years. This documentary guarantees
interesting and promising facts and features professionals to deliver their
knowledge to you. The documentary talks about how photography has developed
regarding technology and its availability and how this impacts peoples
perspectives.
Research Process
The research process will include me using secondary sources such as the
internet and photography books in order to gather up my facts to include in my
documentary. I will also discuss the topic with my teachers as I would like to

include how photography is taught nowadays. I will interview various

professionals in order to get different perspectives on the topics and what they
think are the pros and cons of development regarding photography throughout
the years.

Interview questions
1. What interests you the most about photography?
2. Regarding development of photography, do you think there were some
that was unnecessary?
3. On the other hand what developments do you think improved in regards to
photography?
4. How did you get into the photography business?
5. Do you think photography is something that needs to be academically
studied?

Opinion and BiasThis issue is when it needs to be ensured that all controversial subjects will be
treated evenly and will have a mixed output in order to ensure they are not going
against what someone else states. I must provide a broad range of the subject
matter and perspective.
Regarding my documentary there isnt really an opinion on it as it is mostly
based upon the facts about development of photography. However the main
question is whether these developments have helped photography progress.
Some people may argue that due to how photography and its availability to the
public has progressed it has lost its true art form however I am willing to argue
against this and state how this progression has had a positive effect on
photography.
An example of this is after the passing of Margarets Thatchers death the BBC
was accused of projecting a negative biased opinion against her.

AccuracyAccuracy has been a common issue in the media industry especially when the
number of people involved is huge. It is one of the most important issues in
media however you cannot be taken to court if some facts are proven incorrect
although it may lead to litigation. This issue ensures that all facts are correct to
make sure there isnt false information given to the public.
The BBC guideline highlights how all research must be thorough and prepared to
be checked through and to seek advice.

To ensure my documentary follows these guidelines I will take information from

either professionals or trustworthy sources such as well-reviewed websites and
books used for educational reasons.
An example of when accuracy was an issue was when CNN reported a giant
hornet infestation in China and in fact insisted that China was in a different part
of the world that it actually is and published the location of the country was in
Southern Brazil. Both of these facts were proven incorrect and the information
was found on an untrustworthy website.
Balance and impartiality
This is an important issue and impartiality is considered to be a vital aspect when
doing factual programming. This issue means that if there is an argument
involved it must be well-balanced to ensure no one feels overpowered or invalid.
News in whatever form must be treated with due impartibility much like other
aspects such as arguments and editorial freedom. There must be a good balance
regarding arguments to ensure the programme doesnt come across as bias or
was produced to offend a certain opinion.
Regarding my documentary I will ensure both sides will be heard in order to allow
both perspectives to have a fair share of their opinion and why they think this. In
order to ensure that both are valid I will ask for their argument to be backed up
with facts as well as where they learnt or heard this from.
The BBC was accused of never having a balance regarding their articles as well
as impartiality.
Objectivity and Subjectivity
The main difference between objectivity and subjectivity is how they are shown
to the audience. Subjective information is mostly based on one persons opinion
and their view point on this specific topic however this can be slightly biased no
matter what the information provides. Objective information is supposed to be
unbiased to achieve this difference the presenter will speak without expression
and pushing their view on to others but simply for it to be discussed.
With my documentary I will ensure to have more of an objective opinion involved
although there are two sides involved the documentary itself will remain civil and
use facts to back up both so the audience can decide for themselves and have
facts to back up their opinion regarding development in photography. H

Representation
Representation is when a programme will highlight how a person or thing is in a
particular way whether it be positive or negative.
My documentary will not be representing a particular or singular thing but a
variation of events and people involved in the history of development of
photography so different things will be represented in a different way dependent
on the effect they had on imagery.

There have been several cases of representation being misinterpreted or being

inaccurate. This can come from journalist not doing enough research on their
articles and publishing misleading facts to the public.

Access and Privacy

Since the Human Rights Act of 1998 it has been stated that everyone has the
right to a private life. This involves the right to a private family life and freedom
of expression. This type of issue has to be respected and considered in factual
programme especially if its based upon a singular person or specific group of
people or an event that involves peoples lives and how they changed. For my
documentary I may need to access past reports and look into facts about other
peoples lives from the past to ensure I do not publish anything that shouldnt be
known to the public I must review the guidelines of this act and the specifics I am
not allowed to discuss.
When the guardian hacked into young Milly Dowlers phone in order to find more
evidence and facts for their articles this was a massive invasion of privacy and
illegal this was a massive story and was know worldwide.
Contract with the viewerI am promising the viewer a well discussed and unbiased report on the pros and
cons of development in imagery. To stick to this I will ensure that I have both
perspectives and an even amount discussion on both halves to make sure no one
feels overpowered and as if their opinion isnt as important or isnt as valid. I also
will be promising the viewer an accurate discussion based upon cross-checked
facts from trustworthy sources as well as having an objective argument and
respect to the people mentioned in the documentary and a respectful discussion
about their discoveries or theories.
Am I filming in public?
I will be filming in public as I need to interview people in the college studio. As
well as shooting in the street.
The college studio have granted me permission to use the studio when I need to.
Am I using archive footage?
I will be using archived footage from past events and will reference those whom I
need to give credit to. I will be doing this as it will be more informative for my
audience and will give them a better understanding of the events I will be talking
and informing them about.
Am I secretly filming on location?
No.
Is the angle I am approaching offensive in anyway?
I do not believe my documentary is offensive to anyone as it does not discuss
ethical issues only issues regarding the development of photography.

I will ensure to follow the requirements given to me from the Broadcasting act of
1994. I have read through the regulations and have made note of the ones that
effect my documentary and the structure of it.
