thattrulydemonstratehislackofagency.Themurderscommittedbythemonsterandthe
proceedingpursuitofitallprovethatVictorsabilitytocausechange,hisagency,hasbeen
neutralizedbythecreationofthemonsterandtheabortionofitsmate.
OneofFrankensteinsfirstactionsafterhismonthslongillnesswastocreateafemale
versionofthemonstertopropitiateit.Frankensteinhasadifficultinnerstruggle,ashe
contemplatestheconsequencesofcreatinganothermonster.Atthispoint,Frankensteinstill
possessesagency,ashedemonstrateswhenhegoesbackandforthbetweenfulfillingthedemand

walkingupanddownthepassagesofthehouseandinspectingeverycornerthatmightafforda
retreattomyadversary(239).Yet,hisstudiousinspectionsweretonoavail,asthemonster
wasstillabletokillElizabethwhilehewasstudyingtheirretreat.Inthisinstance,hewas
physicallyunabletodoanythingtochangetheinevitablecircumstances.Helackedagency.

Frankensteinisinthesesituations.HewatchedfromthesidelinesasJustineispronouncedguilty
andthenexecuted,whileknowingshewasinnocent.Then,Clervalwasmurderedwhen
FrankensteinwasstillonaboattravelingtoItaly.Wecontinuouslysee,throughthemurders,the
monstersstealthandcunningnesseffectivelytakingawayFrankensteinsagency.
Grievedwithallthedeathsofhisfriendsandfamily,VictorFrankensteinfutilely
threatenshisrevenge.Hetravelsallovertheworldtryingtoexactrevengeonacreature,more
powerfulandmorecunningthanhe.Theresultismuchthesameafterchasingthemonsterfor
averylongtime,littlehaschanged.Hehasnotbeenabletocatchthemonster,insteadheis
strandedonapieceofice,barelyfightingoffdeath.Onceagain,weseehowthemonsterisable
totakeawayFrankensteinsagency.Eventhough,hetriestocreatethechangehedesired,heno
longerhasthephysicalabilitytodosoonlythemonsterhasagency.Ithastheabilitytodecide
thefateofitselfandanyoneheencounters.Itisatthispointthatwerealizetheagencyofthe
youngFrankensteinhasbeenpassedtothemonster.
