K-1-2 Demonstrate knowledge of human anatomy and physiological

changes during pregnancy.

DESCRIBE ONE

I believe that one significant learning experience that I had with human
anatomy and physiological changes during pregnancy is our theory class
where the presumptive, probable, and positive signs of pregnancy as
well as the physiological changes were discussed. Moodle is
incorporated in our maternity theory class where assigned book readings,
PowerPoints and video links were provided to enhance our knowledge
regarding the physical and physiological changes that a pregnant woman
goes through in the whole three trimester of pregnancy.

PowerPoint questionnaires have case scenarios related to the
aforementioned changes in pregnancy that challenges my understanding
of what was taught in our class.

Softening of the cervix (Goodells sign), softening of the lower uterine
segment (Hegars sign) and change of color of the vagina from pink to
violet (Chadwicks sign) (Perry et al., 2013).

The said physical changes correlates to the physiological alteration of

the body to prepare for pregnancy. For example, the physiological

changes in the reproductive system occurs when the cells in the cervix
increase in number consequently increasing vascularity and size of the
cervix (hypertrophy). The cervix becomes loose, edematous and highly
elastic thereby the Goodells sign (Perry et al., 2013).
Learning the aforementioned topics about pregnancy is meaningful to
me because I have the knowledge on what nursing interventions to apply
when giving care to a pregnant client. I can also apply my knowledge to
construct a nursing care plan that will have the focus or priority care in
respect to my clients health care needs.

Good: understands competency in theory and in scenarios and nursing

practice
I used good to rate my proficiency in K-1 competency because I
believe that I have learned the theory and I was able to relate these
learning to my past experiences from my last two pregnancies. Having
experienced the physical and physiological changes of pregnancy will
help me better understand my clients current state.
Furthermore, I used this rating because I am still missing clinical
experience in the health care field in order to be fully competent on
maternal/newborn nursing.

I believe that I can apply this learnt skill for future practices after I
received my license as a full pledge Practical Nurse. Maternal/Newborn
nursing is one of the many scopes of practice that I need to perform. Full
knowledge and understanding of human anatomy and physiological
changes during pregnancy will help me identify the progression of the
aforementioned alterations that in turn will help me implement the
appropriate nursing interventions and client teaching.
