One of the essential experience that I learned in NFDN 1003

related to the CLPNA competency how to maintain sterile
technique to prevent infection. For instance the procedure of
wound dressing change I used sterile technique, which means
that to microorganisms will be introduced. Furthermore I must
remember to prepare equipment that I will need prior to initial
the procedure of dressing change, as well as to gather anything
that I might need beside my sterile dressing set. In addition to
do an assessment of the dressing prior of initiation of the
dressing change. For instance when I was performing wound
care related to surgical sites using a sterile technique by
ensuring not to contaminate sterile field during the process of
changing the dressing.
I learned the importance of keeping a sterile field when
performing wound care. In order to perform those skills it
requires knowledge and to have the ability to assess and
manage surgical incision and wound care to facilitate healing.
For instance by teaching my client about factors that can delay
the healing process by providing example and also to
encourage the client to ensure to consume food that contain
vitamin C, B 12 or supplement of vitamin c and B12 and also
to consume food that high in protein. It was very meaningful
to be knowledgeable about the sterile technique, because it is
crucial to use a sterile technique when doing complex wound
dressing change. Furthermore it is very significant to use
sterile technique to ensure not to contaminate the field, as well
as to maintain the instrument not to be contaminating such as
sterile scissors and forceps, and sterile dressings and gauze.
Good: Understands competency in theory and in scenarios
and nursing practice. I was able to apply the knowledge that I
gain in theory to use it in the lab effectively. For instance due
to having good understanding of the theory classes on wound
care I was able to use that to perform the proper wound care
using sterile technique in lab. Furthermore I was able to be
careful when dressing a surgical site to ensure no
contamination. However there were times where I was not able

to keep a sterile field without contaminating it. Even though I

do understand it is very essential to maintain the field sterile
when performing dressing change. Client understanding play
role in order for the process of wound healing. In order to
achieve the competency I did practiced in the laboratory as
well as watched video on Moodle prior to the lab, read NFDN
textbook and also went to as many open labs to practice my
skills. In addition attended lecture and read my note.
In order to be able to provide the best care to my client I must
be able to use knowledge and ability to assess and manage
surgical incision and wound care to facilitate healing during
dressing change, throughout planning of care. For instance I
will apply what I learned in theory to use it in lab as well as to
continue to practice my skills in lab and improve with my
sterile technique. Furthermore I will ensure to maintain a
sterile field when doing dressing change. In the future practice
I will use the skills that I have learned and apply it to my
nursing practice by teaching my patient at work about the care
that I will be providing them and be able to work as team with
my co-worker to deliver best care to the patient, as well as
gaining knowledge through experience and ongoing new skill
that might have to learn to enhance my knowledge or to keep
myself up to date by reading nursing journals article and
attending conference for nurses according to my scope of
practices that I must be compliant with.
