BP Background Information
Occurred at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in The Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010.
Biggest oil spill in U.S. history, more than 200 million gallons of oil.
The well was located over 5,000 feet beneath the waters surface in the vast frontier of the deep sea
Well was in a dark location with high pressures and cold temperatures

What caused the oil spill?

There were 8 safety the failures that caused oil spill:
1. Dodgy cement
2. Misinterpretation of pressure test
3. Didnt spot the leak
4. No gas alarm
5. Overwhelmed separator
6. No battery for BOP
7. Valve Failure
8. Valve Failure #2

BPs Response
At first, BP CEO Tony Hayward downplayed the incident by saying the amount of oil was
relatively tiny compared to the very big ocean. He also stated that the environmental
impact of the spill would be very, very modest. Hayward later on apologized for his
statements and also added We will make this right. He stepped down from his position
in October 2010. The oil spill was resolved by placing a cap where the oil was leaking
from over the course of several months.

How the oil spill affects wildlife

Oil coated birds' feathers, causing birds to lose
their buoyancy and the ability to regulate
body temperature.
Mammals could have ingested oil, which causes
ulcers and internal bleeding.
Sea turtles were covered in oil .
Dead and dying deep sea corals were
discovered seven miles from the Deepwater
Horizon well.
