Distracted Driving
- Engaging in non-driving activities that
distract the driver
- Three types; Visual, Manual, Cognitive
- Visual - taking eyes off the road
- Manual - taking hands off the wheel
- Cognitive - focussing other than the
task of driving

It is a Problem We Need to Fix

- Can lead to an accident or crash
- Leads to abandoning in control of the vehicle
- Causes the driver to miss important events on the
road
- 18% of fatalities in 2014 were from it
- Over 60% of people admit to talking on the phone
while driving

Distracted Driving - The History

The issue that is distracted driving is something that has been

around since the birth of automobiles themselves.

From 1990 to present

day 2015, over 61% of
distracted driving
incidents have been a
direct result of using cell
phones in the car

Distracted Driving - Through The Average Eyes

John Siniff, a
Senior Editor at
USA Today,
elaborates on a
near death
experience with
an encounter
involving a
distracted driver.

Moments after leaving USA

TODAY's offices in suburban
Virginia on Saturday evening, I
hopped on Interstate 66 for a
quick drive home. The skies
were overcast, a light mist was
falling, and the sun was
beginning to set. A young
woman speeding along in the
lanes behind me was lost in a
phone conversation when the
2,500 pounds of metal she was
piloting slammed into my
vehicle from behind.

Distracted Driving - Whats Not Being Done

State officials have

recognized this as
an issue, the real
problem lies in the
enforcement of
these laws.

State officials are more

concerned with using their
police force to prevent drunk
driving however using hand
held devices in the car, is an
equal issue.

Factors That Lead to Drunk Driving

Binge drinking - Binge drinking is when a person consumes a large number of

alcoholic beverages in a short period of time. It places a heavy burden on society
through automobile crashes.
Not having a non - drinking designated driver can lead to drunk driving. People
should decide before they leave home and before they have their first drink who
the driver is.

Drunk Driving - Personal Story

Jessica Manosa was 20 when she decided to throw a party without her parents
permission. A lot of people showed up and got drunk. One of the people at the
party left early and drove away while drunk. As he started to drive he hit and
killed another person , a 19 year old student. The students family was
heartbroken. This all happened because a boy got drunk under the influence and
decided to drive.
The parents are still distraught , this was their middle child who lived at home ,
his death really has taken a big chunk out of their lives said the 19 year old boys
lawyer.

Affect on society
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 40%
of total traffic deaths in the United States are due to drunk driving

Action Plan

- Create a petition asking state officials to enforce stricter laws on distracted driving
- The stricter laws will include that only 0.5% alcohol is allowed in your body while
driving and smartphones must be on airplane mode and if not, severe
consequences will follow
- You can join the it can wait campaign
