Principles of Design, are the laws of designing anything. When making a design the five principles are unity and variety, emphasis and focal point, scale and proportion, balance, and rhythm. Unity and Variety the degree of agreement exiting among the elements in @ design Unity mean that congtity or arrangement exsts among the elements in a design; the look as though they belong tgetho, as though some vi sual conection beyond mere chance has caused them to cme together. Another term forthe same idea is harmony Varo variation ona wsual theme causing contrast ina design Emphasis and Focal Point 2 compositional devise emphasizing a certain area or object to draw atetion to the plece and to encourage laser scrutiny of the work. Iti give to an area within the design because that area 'smoant tobe seen ors more important wien compared to othe elements of the design. (Contrast is sometimes include as aprinciple of design and is similar to emphasis and focal point in that one may use contacto achieve emphasis, ‘Seale and Proportion are rlatod terms in that both basically refer to sz, Seale is essentially another word for size, and proportion refers to elativesie- measured against ater elements or against a mental norm or standard, Balance is the cstrbuton of visual weight of design elements within a composition. The equltium of opposing 1 interacting forces in a pictorial composition, Rhythm is based on the repetition ofrecurent motifs. tis the movement or variation characterized by the regular recurrane or altemation of ifferent quantities a conditions. In simpler wards, its just ike pattern and shows that the design has a ‘beat’ or Now going wath it Elements of Design, are things that are involved in making a design. The seven elements of design are line, shape and volume, texture and pattern, illusion of space, illusion of motion, value, and color. Ling is visual element of length and can be coated by seting a pint in motion, Line defines the position and rection ofthe design tcan define shape, convey mood, feeling, and define space ‘Shape and Volume i visually perceived area eeate ether by an enclosed lin or by colar or value changes defining the outer edge, A shape can also be called a form tis something distinguished fram its surroundings by ts ‘tne within your design. Volume isthe appearance of height, with, and depth af form. ‘Texture and Pattern texture refers othe surface quality of an object that appeals to touch or tactile sense Patterns the repetition f visual elements or @ module in regular and anticipated sequence, (Depending on inter rotations sometimes considered a rncple because it may Be used to organize elements in a design) Mlusion of Space gives the ilsion of thee dimensional space on a two dimensional suave Mlusion of Mation tho suggestion of change or movement in two dimensional or thro dimensional at.
