University education should be more practical than academic.

What is your opinion?
Tertiary learning is a critical component of education in general.
At the university level, there are traditional ways of teaching,
and, more recently, alternative methods of instruction. While
some people believe that higher education should continue to
be based on academic curriculum, others contend that more
practical teaching styles need to be introduced.
There are two main reasons why academic pedagogy is
important at tertiary level. Firstly, this way of teaching is the
most efficient because the ratio of teachers to students is so
high. For example, in some universities professors are
responsible for many students. In fact, they may deal with
upwards of 500 students in a semester. The only realistic
means of teaching such a large group is through written text or
lecturing on a mass scale. Secondly, students benefit from a
program that focuses on independent learning. The discipline
required to learn autonomously is beneficial for any student,
and will help them throughout their working lives.
However, a more practical education can be positive. This is
because students are able to actually do what they are learning
which seems to aid the learning process. In fact knowledge and
skills are better transferred through real life experience as
opposed to acquisition through text. The learning of chemistry
is a good example. Every scientist understands the need to
learn through practical experiments. They would agree that
this method of teaching enables more effective learning.
To conclude, in my opinion, quality tertiary education requires a
combination of both academic and pragmatic teaching styles. If

we can properly blend the two, then we can create the most
effective learning environment for our university students.
