Action

Items and Implementation Timeframes for


Sustainable and Accountable Action for Asian American Studies
and API Campus Climate Resources
Thursday, May 29th, 2014:

We, the Coalition for Critical Asian American Studies (CCAAS) at the University of California,
San Diego, request that the University (UCSD) and administrators under the Univeristy (UCSD) formally
respond to these demands within 10 days and publicly commit to fulfill the terms of our Action Items
and their respective Timeframes:

Making transparent and easily accessible the past ten years of disaggregated data (starting from
2005) as well as future disaggregated data on Asian American and Pacific Islander students both in
online and on paper publications.

Fulfill by the Fall of


2014
(4 months).

The creation, establishment, and sustained funding for an API welcome day during Triton Day and
the designing and printing of the API Resource Lifebook.

Fulfill by the Spring of


2015 (10 months); by
Triton Admit Day of
2015.
Fulfill by the Spring of
2015 ( 1 year).

The creation, establishment, and sustained funding for high school and transfer outreach
programs and the hiring of at least one professional staff to develop, coordinate, and implement
these programs for Southeast Asian American, Pacific Islander, and other underserved Asian
American students.
Increased funding and permanent investment in Counseling and Psychological Services to hire at
least two full-time (FTE) clinical staff psychologists who can serve the community specific needs of
Asian American and Pacific Islander students through intake and the development of community
programs such as the Asian Community Forum. This funding also will include allocations for the
development of these outreach programs.

Fulfill by the Fall of


2015 ( 1 year).

1) The sustained and allocated funding for the opening of three tenure track junior faculty
positions and three senior faculty positions to teach Asian American Studies particularly across the
departments of Ethnic Studies, Literature, Communications, Education Studies, and the Critical
Gender Studies program, whose research focus include API Womens Studies, API Sexualities
Studies, API Literature, API health, Southeast Asian History and Contemporary Issues, and Pacific
Islander Studies by Spring of 2017 (at least two faculty hirings per year);
2) the opening of another six faculty lines to be implemented by Spring of 2020.

The creation, establishment, and sustained funding for a Critical Asian American Studies minor
housed under an appropriate department.

The creation, establishment, staffing and sustained operation funding for the Asian Pacific Islander
Middle Eastern Desi American Resource and Research Center

Fulfill by Spring of 2017


(3 years).

The creation of a task force committee(s) composed of undergraduate students, graduate


students, staff, faculty, and administration that reports directly to the University of California, San
Diego Office of the Chancellor in maintaining, coordinating, and implementing accountability to
the deadlines of the aforementioned action items by the Spring of 2015; as well as work on
addressing issues pertinent to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community at UCSD.
