Ensembles 30th anniversary
HIGHLIGHTS

Group founded in 1986 by Fort Worth Symphony musicians

Celebration began with music for violin and harp
Great Schubert played for the second time this week

withanunusual,variedprograminFirstJeffersonUnitarianUniversalistChurchonMonday
evening.MusiciansoftheFortWorthSymphonyOrchestra,whoinauguratedSpectrumthree
decadesago,werewellrepresentedbothonstageandintheaudience.
Thecelebrationbeganwithsomethingbrandnew:musicforviolinandharpbyPatricioda
Silva.TheperformerswereCrimson,aduocomposedofharpistJaymeeHaefnerand
violinistMattMilewski.
ItimmediatelybecameapparentthatdaSilva,whoreceivedhismusicaltraininginhis
nativePortugalandtheUnitedStates,hasarealgiftformelody.Ifoundhismusiclyrical,
appealingandoriginalinitspairingofthetwoinstruments.

I SUSPECT THAT DA SILVA MAY HAVE AN IMPISH SENSE OF HUMOR.

IsuspectthatdaSilvamayhaveanimpishsenseofhumor.Thetitlesofthethreepieces
makingupMondaysofferingwereWestIsThisWay,WereNotinKansasAnyMoreand
HandsOn.Thesignicanceofthetitles(TheWizardofOz,perhaps,intheKansaswork?)
wasnotmadeclearbythemusic.
Inanycase,itwasreallyquitepleasantstuff.

SowasRaviShankarsDawnEnchantedbytheRagaTodi,whichbroughtHaefnerand
Milewskibackonstage.Itseemedatrsttobeasoloforharp,whichproduced
impressionisticsoundsaloneforawhile,butthentheviolinwasheardoffstageandnally
onstage,whenthesolobecameaninstrumentalduet.Thiswasreallyaquiteseductivework
ofgreatoriginality.
Thencameoneofthegreatestofallpiecesofchambermusic:SchubertsStringQuintetin
Cmajor,D.956.PerformingwereviolinistsJenniferChangandMollyBaer,violistDaniel
Sigale,andcellistsAllanSteeleandLouis-PhilippeRobillard.
Theyproducedapassionateperformanceofbothgreatlyricbeautyandstormydrama.The
hauntingadagio,whichisalwaysspine-tinglingwithitssoaringrstviolinandsurging
cellos,wasanexceptionalhighpoint.

THE PROGRAM, AND A RELATED ONE ON SATURDAY, WAS A KIND OF FESTIVAL OF GREAT SCHUBERT.

Theprogram,andarelatedoneonSaturday,wasakindoffestivalofgreatSchubert.The
ChamberMusicSocietyofFortWorth,withguestItalianpianistAlessandroDeljavan,
presentedthecomposersFantasyinFminorforpiano,fourhands,D.940,andthePiano
TrioinB-atmajor,D.898,onSaturday.
TheSpectrumsstringquintetwounduptheSchubertfestival.
