Ozymandias,Shelleysfamouspoem,revealstheimpermanenceofhuman
achievement.Thepoemdescribesacrumblingstatue,acolossalwreckintheformofa
longlostking.ThereaderofthepoemisthriceremovedfromOzymandias,asthespeaker

surelyintendedtoproclaimhismighttoanyonedrawingnearthestatue.Thephrasekingof
kingsdemonstratesthathewasverypowerful,perhapsmoreakintoanemperorthanthe
princeofanationstate.Whilethecommandtodespair!onceimploredhissubjectsand
enemiestodreadhispower,itnowimploresthereadertodespairatfleetingnatureofhumanity.
Throughdecay,timeinvertsthisstatementtoimplythatnomatterhowpowerfulyouare,orhow
greatyourworks,youwilleventuallyfadeintoobscurity.
Asenseoftheimpermanenceofhumanachievementpermeatesthispoem.Thepoems
focusonvastnesshelpsevokeasenseOzymandiasmight,heighteningthereadersdespair
atthestatuesdecay.BydistancingthereaderfromOzymandiasspowerthroughlayersof
