2016 The AVEMAM ST. XAVIER'S SCHOOL Post Box 19, Hazaribag, Jharkhand-825301 CBSE Afiiliation No. 3430016; School No: 08034 Website: www.sxshzb.org; e-mail: sxshzb@gmail.com Tel: (06546) - 222334, 224934, 267191; Fax 265922 TO DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM A Message from the Principal On the 64th anniversary of the foundation of St. Xavier's our newly constructed auditorium will be inaugurated. As the inal touches were being given, Irequested the present and past students as well as the friends of the school to suggest an appropriate name forthe auditorium, The alumni of the 60s and 70s suggested that it be named after either Fr. John Moore, the Founder or Fr. Kevin Grogan, a very compassionate person who contributed the most to develop and maintain the schoo's ample playing fields and to beautify the campus. Both were great men who merited monuments named after them. The present students, not as familiar with the Fathers of the first three decades of the school, offered some creative suggestions. Evidently, not many of them could relate to that history so dear to the alumni of the boarding era. Some of them even proposed to make it “Jamesorium,” or “Fr. P.J. James Memorial.” Well, why not? My colleagues and | agreed that the selected name should beckon the students to embody in their own lives a key theme or value of Jesuit education. It should inspire the students to make better choices in life for the more universal ‘200d, Moreover, the auditorium was conceived as a Diamond Jubilee project. Now that we are four years past sixty, and heading towards Platinum Jubilee, we shall drop “diamond!” butretain “jubilee” inthename. In recent times, we have been emphasising in the school a key concept from the spirituality of the Jesuits, magis (pronounced "mah-jis) tis a Latin word that means "more" or "better." The roots of the word are ascribed to St. Ignatius (of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. Magis refers to doing more for Christ by doing more for others. Itis related to Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (&.M.D.G.), a Latin phrase meaning “or the greater glory of God.” While our competitive society often thinks in terms of having or doing more, magis calls us to depth and quality in being and in what we do, Magis invites us to consider how we can serve the world magnanimously, with fire, passion, and zeal From this point of view when discerning between two or more good options, all else being equal, one would choose thatwhich serves the more universal good, .e., that which makes the widestimpact. The familiar proverb, “Givea man a fish and you feed him fora day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for alifetime,”" well eaptures what Ignatius meant by ‘the more universal good Magis is about striving for excellence in all our endeavours. ttis about having a large heart. Itis about being more generous. It is about giving more. Magis is about trying to grasp beyond one’s reach. In the words of the Man of La Mancha To dream the impossible dream To fight for the right, to fight the unbeatable foe Without question or pause To bear with unbearable sorrow To be willing to march into Hell To run where the brave dare not go For a heavenly cause To right the unrightable wrong And | know if I'l only be true {0 love pure and chaste from afar To this glorious quest To try when your arms are too weary That my heart will ie peaceful and calm To reach the unreachable star When I'm laid to my rest, This is my quest {And the world will be better for this to follow that star That one man, scorned and covered with scars No matter how hopeless Stil strove with his last ounce of courage No matter how far To reach the unreachable star May MAGIS, Jubilee Auditorium inspire all of to DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM! Lp HAPPINESS QUOTIENT Academic Session 2015-16Inaugural Address by Fr. Geoff, S. J. on March 23, 2015) Fr. James, members of the school administration, staff, parents and my dear students. Good morning to you all. Today you start the innings of 2015- 16. For some of you, this will be your last innings at school. May God bless your final year and your future. Some of you are just beginning your life at St. Xavier's. All the best. May you alll bat, bow! and field well... ... especially on March 26", when India plays Australia in the 2" semifinal of the World Cup. ms When people ask me who do you support when India plays Australia, my answer-is always 50-50. To all of you present here, my message is BE HAPPY. | want to share a few thoughts with you this morning about HAPPINESS. Let me begin by introducing very good friend of mine from Bhutan. His name is Karma Ura. | met Ura a few years ago and he was smiling. | suppose he isstill smiling. No, I know he is still smiling, because he specializes in Happiness. The people of Bhutan like other people in the world are concerned about their GNP [Gross National Product i.e. how much they are worth as a nation], but they are much more concerned about. their GNH, i.e. their Gross National Happiness. Experts say that Bhutan is the happiest nation in the world. There are some reasons for this. The crime rate is very low and murders are almost unheard of, Reminds me of the small African village featured in “The Gods Must be Crazy”. Those of you who have seen the film, will recall that violence was introduced when a coca cola bottle was thrown from a plane. Along with violence, came suspicion and jealousy. Before that bottle was thrown out of that plane, everyone in that little African village was happy. Now, back to Bhutan. The government of Bhutan provides free health care and education for everyone. There are three times more monks than soldiers and instead of planning and making war, the soldiers produce most of Bhutan’s liquor. Bhutan was the last country in the world to have television. Itis also the first, non- smoking country on the planet. The Bhutanese even mention happiness in their national anthem: “As the doctrine of Lord Buddha flourishes, may the sun of peace and happiness shine on the people.” Underlying all of these facts, are three qualities. The first quality is trusting relationships. The second is compassion for all creatures- great and small. The third is loving attentiveness. By the depth and strength of these qualities, we can measure our GNH, our Gross National Happiness... in (Avera ZU) TEACLOLU ‘our families, ourschool and our neighborhood. Let us take each quality and reflect together. Firstly, trusting relationships, both with nature and among ourselves. Again, Bhutan can help us. On every street corner of Thimpu, the Bhutanese capital, there isa sign which reads like this: When the lasttree is cut When the last riveris emptied When the last fish is caught Onlythen will we realize that we cannot eat money. Let's not wait till this happens. Let's relate to Mother Nature as her trusting children, Like in all things, trustingis not a matter of how much you have but how much you care for what you have. Some people think that money is needed for relationships. But it’s not. Bhutan is quite a poor country but their people are rich in happiness and that's all that really counts. Some people exploit through relationships and see money and profits as more important than people. This is what the big corporations often do. It all comes down to trustworthiness, Mutual trust builds up relationships and this results in greater happiness. How do we relate with one another in our families, here in St Xavier's and with the larger community? Is there a trusting and mutual relationship? Do each of us try to make a difference for good through our relationships? Are we agents of happiness or agents of sadness, pessimism and gloom? ‘Secondly, Compassion, that most Buddhist of all teachings. Lord Buddha is referred to as the ‘compassionate One. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, says that compassion requires of us to rid ourselves of all negative thoughts of hatred, jealousy, anger and fear and to cultivate kindness and ‘compassion and open the door to happiness. Jesus teaches us to be compassionate as our Heavenly Father is compassionate. God has no favourites. Everyone has the same- sun and moon rising and setting on them. A compassionate person is a happy person. And a happy person makes a happy home and happy homes make a happy nation anda happier world. Lastly, loving attentiveness. The Bhutanese do everything with great attentiveness - even crossing a road or washing dishes. Meditation is important for them. Going deeply into oneself with loving attentiveness. Heightening the awareness of what they see, feel, touch, smell and hear. Attentiveness, so my friend Ura says, becomes loving, when it helps us to be aware that we share this earth with fellow travelers who have just as much right to travel life's roads as we do. Letme finish by telling you all to close your eyes and thank God for something or someone who made you happy. Have you all closed your eyes? Remain like that for a few seconds ... Now open your eyes and realize that you have just increased your GNH. Your Gross National Happiness. Congratulations. Now pass that happiness on to someone else and increase their quota of happiness. Thank you, and may God bless you all and may the best team win on the 26th. Jai Hind! At this very moment we share a sense of accomplishment celebrating the illustrious history of St. Xavier's. You great human beings present before us this morning represent all our past students and their glorious achievements. You affirm to us once again the fruit of the hard work of all my predecessors starting with Fr. John Moore down the decades. You embody the success of the efforts of generations of teachers and non-teaching staff of the school. You continue the mission of the school in your real life situations around the globe. You fill the school community with that well-deserved Xaverien pride in its magnificent legacy. The times have changed and alongwith it the school also has changed. Yet | assure you on behalf of the school management faculty and staff that we continue to maintain our high standards in academics, discipline, and performance in sports, games and other co-curricular activities. For instance, this year our boys basketball and football teams have qualified from the eastern region to play the CBSE national championship. Even with the dwindling number of Jesuits in the School our vision and creative fidelity to the school's Ignatian character are not compromised. The mission of the school does not end by sending students up for the Board examinations. Jesuit schools are deeply interested in their alumni/ alumnae and their well-being. Through our world-wide alumni associations we help facilitate networking and mutual support among the alums. This sense of ‘connection is vital in inculcating among the present generation of our students a sense of our extended family and sincere commitmentto the values Jesuit education promotes. I thank each one of you, of Gold, Ruby and Silver for coming here. Some of you had to take a lot of trouble to be here now on one of the coldest days of the year. I conclude these few words of welcome with this wish and prayer: May all Xaveriens be persons of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment striving for excellence and committed to the most authentic human values. Lp Speech by Mr. Ramesh Thakur Class of 65 to Class of 201! Fr. James, friends from the Class of 65, 75 and 90, former students § including my brother Devesh, all you beautiful young ladies and dashing young gentlemen in front of me, | speak to you mindful of Alexis de Tocqueville's caution: “To remain silent is the most useful service that a mediocre speaker can render to the public good.” It may be that, like Mrs. Piper in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House, |, have “a good deal to say... but not much to tell.” Boys and girls, Warmest felicitations on completing school! As you embark on the second stage of your life cycle, my class has entered the final stage -some of us further along than others. Golden Jubilee is for those who passed out 50 years ago, but have not yet passed away. You are twice blessed. First, you are heir to one of the greatest, most ancient civilisations and richest cultural traditions in the world: And second, that astonishingly long and deep heritage has been nurtured and channelled into modern education by some of the world’s most selfless and dedicated teachers. The Jesuits are living proof that while "We make a living what we get, we make a life by what we give.” We were fortunate, and my class was the last one here when the visionary person who started this school left to start another, to have experienced the pastoral care of Fr John Moore, the school's founder. As | head into the sunset of my life, the most treasured accolade after | pass over to the other side would be what | say today of Fr Moore: He was a good man. Because of what he did, the world was a better place when he left than when he entered it. Our lives were enriched for having been touched by Fr Moore. The world todayis poorer for his passing. His philosophy of education was as enlightened as his personality was warm and welcoming. He believed passionately in a broad education that extended well beyond mere exams and the acquisition of career skills. Like Churchill, he understood that the empires of the future will be the ‘empires of the mind. Sports teaches us the importance of teamwork, fair play, physical training and application, perseverance, mental discipline and strength; the virtues of sportsmanship and humility, being gracious in defeat and magnanimous in victory. | have had a privileged life and a fortunate career. “If | have seen farther than others, it is because | was standing on the shoulder of giants,” said Isaac Newton. In my case, in the case of my class, our personal and professional journey truly began here, on these very grounds. The minor sO) GEE : ay WTCSSMWOWE contretemps and quotidian difficulties that cropped up regularly were soon forgotten, faded and disappeared into memory's black hole. What remains is the treasured fellowship of friends. | am with the poet William Butler Yeats: “And say my glory was | had such friends.” Live your lives so others will say that of you. I've been an international diplomat for a decade of my life. A diplomat can say the nastiest things in the nicest way, telling you to go to hell so tactfully you look forward to the trip. Boys: if you want to be diplomat, always remember a woman's birthday and never her age. The United Nations represents the dream of a world undivided by borders and differences, and ruled by reason. It exists so that people condemned to die in fear can live in hope once again, apprehensions are turned into aspirations, and want gives way to dignity. Dignity was a central tenet of Fr Moore's. Most great things are simple and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honour, duty, mercy, faith, hope, charity, love, dignity. A week ago the world marked the 67th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The simplicity of its language belies the passion of conviction underpinning it. Its opening sentence affirms that a “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” Note that dignityis put before rights. Being an optimist is an integral part of the job description for a UN diplomat. You have to believe in the possibility of progress, in the underlying goodness of human nature, before you invest time, effort and yes, even emotion, in the cause of making the world a better place for all creatures who inhabitit and all who are yet to inherit it. Ina sweeping book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, Harvard University's Steven Pinker traces a steady reduction in societal, national and international violence from the hunter-gatherer civilisations to modern times, based on empathy, self-control, reason and moral sense as “the better angels” of human nature. And what better angel on these hallowed grounds than Fr Moore? The core challenge for him was to develop the human consciousness of all children under his watch. He held that human dignity was a natural right but also simultaneously a gift. Most of us follow the path to wherever it may lead us. Fr Moore's genius was to go instead where there was no path, leaving a trail for others to follow in his, footsteps. As you face many crossroads on the pathway of life, have the wisdom to tell right from wrong and the courage to choose the right path. As children, a useful guide always is: will your parents swell with pride or shrink with shame when they learn of your antics? As adults - and remember Churchill's bon mot that while growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional - you can turn that around. If your children were to learn of your choice, would they approve and feel proud, or be embarrassed and need explanation and excuses? It is a useful moral compass -your personal Dhruva tara if you like-to help you navigate the challenging journey of adult life. (Avera ZU) TEACLOLU In “The Second Coming” Yeats again it is who tells us that in a world in which the best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity, things will fall apart and the centre cannot hold. “The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned.” Manya time that will ring true. Today we pass the torch to you to hold the centre together, in India and the world. You will have to guard against setbacks trapping you in despair and successes seducing you into vanity. On the first, setbacks, always remember that kites rise highest against the wind -not with it, On the second, triumphs, never forget that pride cometh before a fall Allthat is required for evilto triumph, the English philosopher Edmund Burke reminded us, is for good people to keep quiet and do nothing. In my own country the immediate past army chief expressed the same idea by saying that the standard you walk past, is the standard you accept. What they mean is that it is not enough merely for you to be just in your conduct. In addition, you must not put up with the injustice of others done to third parties. You are the keepers of all your brothers and sisters in the one human family. Respect their faith and beliefs, never denigrate and belittle them, as you would have them respect yours. He who robs others of their self-esteem betrays an impoverished and diminished spirit himself. All that remains for me to do is bid you bon voyage on your life journey. Travel safe on that challengingjourney, be well, do good and, above all, do yourschool proud. Speech by Prof. Duleep Deosthale (Hyde Park, New York, USA) Good Morning! Distinguished Guests and alumni, Fr. James, and all of you wonderful students of St. Xavier's. Itis indeed an honor to speak to you on behalf of the class of 1975. | am joined today by 13 of my classmates who have come from far and wide. We have come from New Zealand, New York and New Delhi, from Jaipur, Patna, Varanasi and Kolkata and from right here in Hazaribag that was home to all of us for so many years. Today is the first time I have returned to Hazaribag since | left school in 1975. It has been 40 long years, but being with my friend's again seems like last week. Today, | would like to share some anecdotal moments with you of our time here at Xavier's and what this school means to the Class of 75 and I. I have devoted the last 30 years of my whole life to teaching in universities in many different countries. My work has required me to manage the international office at universities responsible for recruiting international students, developing international partnerships with universities everywhere and other things international. | have also had the pleasure of traveling to over 350 high schools in different parts of the world. And through all those travels and visits | can say one thing with absolute confidence: St Xavier's Hazaribag, my school, your school, our school is indeed one of the finest schools and you and | have been extremely fortunate. The facilities, the infrastructure and above all the teachers here would be hard to find anywhere else. Our teachers taught us so much more than just what was in the books. Teachers like Fr. Cronin, Fr. Grogan, Fr. Mulhern, Fr. Thwaites, Fr. Jones, Fr. Horan, and Fr. Chacko, and teachers like Mrs. Latif, Mr. Roychowdhry, Mr.S.K. Sinha, Mr K.P. Verma and the formidable Mr. Peter Shave were all rare gems and quite impossible to come across today. They helped lay the foundation then of what we are today. It would be years later that we would begin to understand and appreciate the extent of their impact and influence in our thoughts, our actions, and in our deeds and everyday life. To all of them. and others we say Thank You' and to those who are no longer with us anymore today, may each 'Rest In Peace.’ During the many years that we were here, we developed a close bond. We played, studied and ate together. We fought and chased each far too many times but we always made up. We competed with each other but we also supported each other. 24/7 for several years we were there for each other during all the fun and crazy times but also during those difficult moments. Today as we meet up we have been able to reflect back and laugh at many of those moments. Yes we have all moved on with our lives but those memories have brought us back together once more and we have been able to share the moments, and to reflect on itwith a sense of nostalgia. | do wish to share one moment of the many of our years at SXH: Elocution Day! This was an event that took place in the auditorium and where each one practiced for days and weeks to present a Lp speech or recite a poem. There was, however, one that caught our imagination, the Reverend Martin Luther King's “I have a dream” speech. | mention this speech because it taught us that each one of us has dream. Our teachers then taught us to dream and painted a vision of what lay ahead and asked us to chase these dreams of ours. And in time, dream we did, Each one of us ended up dreaming something different. Yes, there were challenges but we continued to dream. Each of our dreams took us forward and we kept dreaming and we became what we had dreamed to be, to achieve and to accomplish. So today as | stand before you | would like to tell you the following. Go ahead and dream! Think of all the things you wish to do. Chase your dreams! Reach for the stars! And even if you don't get there now, keep trying, And remember one thing: Don't let anyone tell you ever that you cannot dream. Because you can! And you must! Because to dream, is beautiful. And your dreams will become your future! On behalf of the Class of 1975, Iwish each of you the very best and success in your efforts. Thank You and God Bless You All! Speech of Mr. Gitesh Sarma (Ut Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Guest of Honour) Father James, Principal, Distinguished Guests, Teachers and Members of the Staff Dear Friends, | am delighted to be here today. | am delighted to be back home.40 years back we embarked on ajourney from where this spot. For a while it seemed to me that | had travelled a great distance over these years until it dawned on me one fine day that | had never been away from school. St. Xavier's had always been right inside me allthis while. Ina sense, the batches of 1965 and 1975 never left this place. Much has changed since the time we commenced our journey. What stands out is that science and technology has changed our lives in ways that we could not imagine then. My daughter was born in 1994 and does not remember a world without internet. There are so many gadgets and daily living would be impossible without them. My favorite one is a clock. It reminds me that time is such a precious commodity. The time we spenthereis priceless memory. In inviting us you have done us a great service. You have given us a glimpse into the future. I had talked about the clock. It also reminds us of the time to come. We see standing before us leaders of the future ready to rub shoulders with us as adults as equals. In you we see the future leaders of your respective communities, and you will go on to lead India. Indeed, in you we see the future leaders of, the world, ‘The most priceless gift that the school has given us are character and values. Obviously parents make a huge difference and in a sense they are teachers too. Our teachers at school have made a big contribution to set us on the right path and to give us the right values, without which we are nothing. | have little doubt that each one of youris very, very special. The greatest good fortune is to have been born in India or to be touched by India in so many ways. You need to preserve what you have got and also to help create something new. That is how lifeis. Life is about givingback something. In time each one of us, old and young, have to find our own ways of giving back something to this great country, which has given us so much. You will lead India towards a glorious future. (Avera ZU) TEACLOLU Butit is important to remember that we live in a global world with universal values. While we are proud citizens of our own country, we are global citizens today. But when we live and work with people from different parts of the world, itis importantto realize that we belongto the world, Many things have changed over the years. But! can tell you that one thing will never change and this is the importance of good values. | am certain that, beyond your achievements, each one of you will always be known for just that simple thing, which is being a good human having compassion and feelings for others. The most difficult thing in life is the ability to see that people are not bad but only different. It needs enormous mental courage and strength to see the other side and respect the other view. Such anabilityis not automatic. Life is also about humility. The greater human beings are also the most humble. Such values come with good education at home and in school. | believe that we have in some measure an understanding of these qualities as students of a very rare institution; St. Xavier's School | find my eyes at this juncture going moist. It is time to recall those who could not make it to his event. Our beloved teachers and staff members who are not with us today will never be forgotten. Our classmates who could not join us on this journey will never be forgotten. On behalf of each one of us, | salute the teachers and staff of St. Xavier's School also for your wonderful work. Dear teachers, dear members of the staff, you are our heroes. You will always be ourheroes. If | have to give a message to those who are to commence their own journeys from this very same sacred place, there is no substitute for hard work and humility. If you work hard, rewards will follow and you will emerge winners each time. We convey our best wishes to each one of you for a golden future ahead. Chief Guest’s Speech [Mr. Sujit Ghosh] Fr. James, respected teachers, parents and my fellow Xaverians. Thank you very much for the opportunity to deliver the Chief Guest's speech. Itis an honor to be here today to address the proud parents, guests and most importantly, my fellow. Xaverians, the present students of the school, Memories flooded my mind. My first first day in school and the years that, went by. | recalled the cross-country race around the lake, heralding the start of the sports events. Fr. Grogan after Prema, our gardener then, to‘putsome jaldi’ | into getting the Balmoral field ready. | vividly recall the excitement building up tothe sports day. All the buildings getting a coat of paint, the coloured flags, the march past, each house sitting in order of their last years overall sports rankings. Xavier House winning one event after another, Gonzaga House winning the overall championship. | was sitting where you are sitting today, fully involved lam already feeling young, Asa young student we were no doubt taught the prescribed syllabus butimportantly hidden within this curriculum was moral education. The Jesuit Fathers, Brothers and Teachers were not only our mentors but also our loving guardians. They helped to lay the foundation for our character building for future challenges. The world is changing at a very fast pace. Things have changed dramatically over, the past 4 decades. With the advent of Internet, communication has revolutionized. We are now air wired. We have moved from our Industrial-Age-to-networkera. It has - become our social driver. You are in the midst of this and shall continue to revolutionize further. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, BRAIN STUDY The traditional career path is changing. Vocational training will continue to suit to the industrial or commercial needs. To keep pace with the change and emotionally be bonded to the society, the priorities for character building however, still remain same as what it was when we were young. One of the major difference is we grew up in the age of snail mail you are in email. The speed has changed dramatically. What has not changed. © There isno escape from discipline and hard work. © Develop the resilience to cope with challenges and adversity. ® Maintain personal integrity. Moral courage and self-restraint. © Ability to bond and create teamwork. © Concern for fellow beings. ® Gather knowledge through education, sports, human interaction, and pursue with all sincerity. Lp | was a boarder in this school from 1958 to 1965. Those were the formative years for me. Life however came up with a lot of distractions and unexpected turn of events. The building blocks and the foundation of the formative years stood me in good stead. These I learnt in the classrooms, and sports field of this school. Academics is no doubt important. High School marks are required for some college admissions. Extra-curricular activities such as sports and games, elocution, debates, impromptu speech, music, drama, enhance academic learning, Students do not get the same degree of social development or co-operation skills learning, from the classrooms. Some may argue that extra-curricular activities distract from the pursuit of studies, my own experience is that sports and games kept my interest to stay in the boarding school and continue with my studies. Some of the extra-curricular activities do become a life-long passion. Through the extra-curricular activities you start to discover yourself and your personal talent in other areas. Amongst you there could be a budding Sachin Tendulkar, Saina Nehwal or Saina Mirza, Amitabh Bacchan or Vidya Balan or Shreya Ghosal or Saurav Ganguly. Extra-curricular activities helps to develop self-esteem, improve mental alertness, have a healthy life style, develop leadership qualities, develop the attributes of team- work, builds confidence, develop co-ordinated skills and discipline. You start to realize that your potential has no boundaries, that you can raise the level of the bar and continue to achieve and excel. The limiting boundaries are mental. Participation in sports, as much as in other extra-curricular activities, you learn and grow. Your success and your failure helps you to refine. Success creates the feel good factor and the desire to realize more potential. This is good for your future. Failure teaches you more, provided you do not sit and weep or display inappropriate behavior. Learning from failure makes you stronger, more resilient, more humble. Life is about meeting different challenges. Failure teaches .. AMT Win or lose, | hope you walk off the field with pride. Pride in having given your best and in the most sporting manner. You competed for the love of sport. It is very important that negative thought pattern does not sabotage your self-worth. During our school days we were taught to be modest in our victory and be humble. We were taught not to question the decision of the referee even if the decision was wrong. | think that helped us to develop ourmaturity. It prepared us to face the truth of life and the changing world. | can well understand the contradictions that you are faced with, when you see some of the untoward behaviour on field by few sports professionals. Role models displaying rude, unsporting behaviour resorting to play acting, Unfortunately because of media glare and the enormous sums of money, the players behaviour has changed. It presents a wrong perspective. | appreciate that your generation needs more clarity. | would advise that you question and discuss with your teachers and coaches. It deals with helping human beings who are struggling. The desire to help others develops compassion and importantly patience. You can make a difference to your own community e.g. by helping children or people at risk Fr. IN VERITATE ET CARITATE. In truth andin charity. I shall share a quote of Fr. John Moore, to give a brief glimpse of the founding father's vision and his high ideals. “St. Xavier's high level of scientific training must be sustained. But the openness to beyond must be nurtured defended and strengthened. For this St. Xavier's must maintain its autonomy, it's right to step it of the “mainstream” when the waters are fouled. So best will the school assert its loyalty and do its dutyto the nation and to its own character asa St. Xavier's School par excellence.” Thankyou. Jai Hind! But humans today , surrounded by technology are not caring for ‘Nature’. The Idea of Mobile phones was excellent but extensive use of anything is harmful. In today's life a man cannot live without Mobile phones. A survey claimed that a man uses his Smart phone 48 times in a day. The second gadget he uses is his television. This survey also claimed that a man can live without TV for a week but cannot live without his Smart phone. But the question is that are they becoming a nuisance. The answer is yes. The excessive use of mobile phones is becoming a nuisance. Mobile phones are the major cause of radiation. Radiation is also one of the causes of Global warming. Whenever we use our Mobile phones, we are at the receiving end of the radiations. Radiation is a wave which comes out of our Mobile phones. This wave is very harmful in nature. As | said it gives rise to Global warming, due to it many animal species are also declining. Earlier we could see sparrows in Hazaribagh but today we hardly see sparrows. This is also an effect of Radiation. Phones with more features will harm more. Today we are not respecting nature and I'm sure that one day will come when we'll not be respected by nature. Along with this we are cutting trees too. If we reflect, then we'll see that nature has always been giving us. But the situation is changing forthe worse. Yet we can stop it. We can and we should stop it. Only less use of gadgets is a big step in prevention of pollution against nature. Koral Jain Class: IXC eae ce VEOSMOWS, SELECTED ESSAYS FOR INTER-JESUIT SCHOOL ESSAY COMPETITION LUCK, IT IS SAID THAT THE HARDER YOU WORK, THE BETTER IS YOUR LUCK. Asimple thought muses me up “Hard work results are always the sweet ones!” And yes, it is definitely so. If hard work fills a person, then the output is really better and sweeter. Luck is something, which many of us say is written by God but this is probably not true. Itis written by us with our own hand. Our luck is the result of our hard work, It will simply improve if we sacrifice and struggle harder. A plate of gold becomes more shiny and beautiful, ifitis burnt and beaten harder. Similarly, for our luck to get better, ourstruggle is required. Ashort story of a young gir! would illustrate the abovelines. This is a story of a small girl who loves racquets and shuttles and is determined to put her heart and soul into them. Dayand night she played badminton and slowly this game became her goal from her hobby. Due to the effort and love she had put in her game, she got a bright opportunity to play and showcase her talents in the Indian woman's team People said, “Luck changes everything. But she didn't believe and calmly said, “I will write my own luck, by my hard work." She got hurt, fell down but she didn't give up and continued working harder. With enthusiasm, determination and struggle, she became the “World's leading woman badminton player.” This is the biggest gift she could give to India and she is an example to every woman of India proving “Women are notless than men”. Luck is not a thing written by God in his diary. Everybody creates their luck with their doings which may be either for the welfare or for the destruction. More the effort we put in, es ain’ the luckier we would be. Many people say that the luckiest person in today's world is Bill Gates. Whatever he wishes, he can do. He is the luckiest person born on earth, not because of his luxuries, but because of his hardwork. He has given his whole life to his company. Itis we ‘ourselves who give companyto our luck Atea seller could never become the Prime Minister of India, if he just waited for his luck to crack without struggling. A small girl from a village of Assam could never have attained such great heights if she counted days for her luck to accompany her, rather than practising her game day and night. Everything comes to everyone if one struggles for it. These are the real life examples , icons who showcase their hard work behind their luck. A concluding example of a boy will surely examine all the criteria of the topic. Dreaming is a very good habit because dreams become reality one day. A boy lived in a small town and his dreams were very high. He dreamt that he would become like MS Dhoni. Actually, his role model was Dhoni. Also, he considered his luck to be superior than everybody else. But, he didn't work hard atall. He just waited for luck to do all the work for him. As time went by, one of his friends became very good at cricket and he just watched him playing, His friend was soon selected for the Indian cricket team and he got a glamorous opportunity to meet and play with Dhoni. Defeated by luck, the boy felt really very bad and as his hopes were shattered, he now had no option to live, as he believed. So, he attempted suicide for such a small thing. This happens to many people across the world, who just wait for their luck to achieve things . Therefore, Afred White Hard said, “Great dreams are never fulfilled until one strives hard.” It is said that the harder you work; the better is your luck. Thus, though Perfection is not attainable, if we chase perfection we can catch excellencel! Sakshi Jain Class:XB LUCK, IT IS SAID THAT THE HARDER YOU WORK, THE BETTER IS YOUR LUCK. | am a teenager now. | was a child once. | have grown both physically and mentally. | have started to understand things better. lam better at understanding people now. | now, have a better picture of what it takes to be a successful person. I read once. It is luck that determines, from where you take off and where you stand. Being a curious teenager , a question creeped up in my mind thatif luck decides our love then what decides our luck. Little did | know at that time that it would take a good time to get the answer and quench my curiosity. Recollecting some of the experiences of my life I tried to get the answer. Surprisingly this gave rise to several other questions. What is the difference between a star dancer and an expert choreographer? Luck or stage presence? What is the difference between the winning team and the runner-up team in a quiz competition? Luck or lack of consistent awareness. Whats the difference between the topper and the record-rank holder? Luck or lack of preparation? Excitingly, most of the people who failed to reach the top said itis luck that matters and people who made it to the top preferred hard work. This gave me a vague idea of luck. Meeting new people helped me discuss the real concept of luck. . | found that the biggest disease today is not leprosy or malaria but the feeling of being'Unlucky', Not surprisingly most of these ‘unlucky’ people were deprived of achievements, they thought they should have succeeded. Like certain creepers/plants blossom onlyin spring, certain people succeed onthe basis of theirluck. Iwas brimming with confusion at that point of time. I was perplexed upon findinga suitable link between the three -luck, hard work and success. In order to understand this link, | decided to get to know the lives of people like -Steve Jobs, Chetan Bhagat, A.PJ. Abdul Kalam and several others. Little did | know, that would get myanswers. Most average minded people feel it was lucky for Chetan Bhagat to become the top- selling author of India from a Bank Manager. It was fortunate of Steve Jobs to become the ‘owner of Apple even though he bunked his college lecturers and it was nothing but only luck that made an aeronautical engineer, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, one of the mosticonic presidents oflindia. I think, people are very good at connecting luck and success, but they fail to recognize the'hard work’ which creates opportunity.” It is a fact, not at all, uncommon to any one of us in the world that all of us aspire for success. We toll day and night for success. But it is a truth well experienced that hard work is not a thing that brings immediate success. The thing that bridges the gap between hardwork and success is none other than opportunity. Opportunity, be it of any sort, is created as a result of our very own hard work. The more opportunities come to you , the more sincere is your hard work, the more rewarding is your opportunity. Needless eae ce VEOSMOWS, to say, recognizing the value of their hard work; these people take full advantage of these opportunities to excel in life. The average-minded section of our society call this ‘opportunity - luck’. Thus, in a real sense there is no concept of luck. | believe in this world, nothing like luck exists. It is just the opportunities that come our way because of our constant efforts; to which unsuccessful and average-minded people have given a name-luck. Thus, the answer is discovered. The only way possible to have a better luck is to work hard. The harder you work, the better will be you luck. This is similar to the phrase. Fortune favours the brave. The feeling of being unlucky is the worst feeling that can plague a human mind. Thus, the only way to erase this concepts to learn to work hard. This is the wake up call. If we desire to create a legacy, we need not depend on anything but hard work. And my friend, if you still believe in luck, remember luck is to be Used as a tool of hard work and not as a couch oflaziness. Nikhil Kumar Parashar Class :XC INDIA AS AN EMERGING WORLD POWER India is an emerging power of the world. It was in the beginning of this century that the great scientist and former president Late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam came up with the idea that India will emerge as a world power by 2020. Then it seemed a distant reality. But now it seems a reality, as the things have folded out in the last 15 years. India has a huge population of 125 crores. It is a great liability. At the some time, it is a great advantage as we have 65 crore young people in the age group of 20 to 35 years. Itcan give us a great demographic divident provided we train and employ them. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi's skill development programme and the drive for’ Make in India’ are the steps to achieve these objectives. Corruption and black money have been the stumbling block in India's growth. The present government is keen to check and root out corruption which generates black money and hinders our economic growth. Here too, we see a ray of hope seeing the commitment of the nation. India is a vibrant democracy and inspite of poverty and illiteracy, people are politically mature which they have shown since the days of emergency. Our other institutions, notably judiciary, stands out as an efficient, transparent and ever vigilant organization. Thus, we have all the ingredients of becoming @ world power. Our economy is growing atthe rate of more than 7% and there is a growing world opinion that India should get a permanent seat in the United Nation Security Council Definitely, India is coming of age and is going to become a world power inthe nearfuture. CHANGING WE What strikes me the most is the changing attitude of todays teenagers -to be more specific students. For many of us today, the primary goal of a student's life is no more to gain knowledge but to enjoy our lives to the fullest. No wonder we find reasons to get out of our homes everyday. Atime comes when our parents refuse. So, we find a reason from which no parent could abstain us - going out for tuitions. Tuition centres - places where we are least bothered about learning. So , we feel that these tuition centres are like small clubs where students go every evening dressed up with their bags touching their knees. And yes! Its absolutely okay if you get late for your tuitions because you wanted to have 'gupchup' on the way. We have become so habituated to talk about peaple that we seldom discuss ideas. Thinking sensibly we find that the problem is not that we have changed but the yardstick itself has been changed . Today a student's literary skill is not judged by the grades he receives for his essay but the number of ‘likes! his status receives on Facebook. A student who updates his profile picture daily on whatsapp is considered more ‘socially active’ then a student who enthusiastically takes part eae ce VEOSMOWS, in the school’s cleanliness drives. Thats how we judge people! Today its no more a taboo for a ninth and tenth grade student to have a girlfriend. It is very well known that this is not acceptable but for we teenagers anything goes as far as it looks cool. We have become very much familiar with words like, ‘break up’ or ‘patch-up’ but we have moved far away from words like family and kin. Students make every effort to get the book- Can love Happen Twice- fromthe library but rarely does a student lend Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam's “Wings of Fire”. Students get a sense of maturity by getting into ‘relationships’ . | feel that's funny because atenth grade student who still manages to find his socks at the last minute in the morning claims that he has found his love at such a tender age. We get irritated if our parents ask Us to talk to a relative over the phone but there's no harm in talking to our ‘special’ ends all night. Needless to say our changes have brought more negativity than positivity. The time has ‘come when we need to be concerned about. our character rather than reputation. This is the wake-up call. Brave people would accept this and make an effort to change while cowards will just ignore. Nikhil Kr. Parashar Class :XC TWINKLING STAR “STABILITY OF ATOMS”, yes this was the topic in chemistry that made me realize that this ordinary boy of Hazaribag has done something extraordinary. My chemistry teacher while explaining how atoms gain or lose electrons to become stable cited an example saying that the boy has qualified AIIMS AIR rank and JEE Rank- 2031 together. He did it by losing and gaining in the two years, sacrificing his pleasures and studying in those numerous sleepless nights. And today he is finally “STABLE”, persuing his medical studies at AIMS, Delhi. This “STABLE” boy is none other than VIVEK RISHI, the ex-School Captain of St. Xavier's School, Hazaribag. Success is subjective. To some people success might mean wealth, to others it may be recognition. Success, init's true sense has been explained by Vivek Rishi. A student of this school, who by his performance has made his parents, the school and every person of Hazaribag truly proud. He, by his achievement has made students like us feel that living and pursuing our studies in Hazaribag is not a “MISTAKE”. He has proved that we too can do great wonders after realizing a worthy goal. When | interacted with him, he said that the school provides quality education and one can qualify any exam with hard work and determination. He gives the credit of his success to his parents and the teachers of the school. He was one among the rest but he was a bit different. When others touched, he felt. When others looked, he observed. When others read, he absorbed. When others heard, he listened and when others listened, he tried to understand. Prosperity and success are the results of our thoughts and decisions. Success is not an accident. It's the result of our attitude. We must become victors, not victims. Henry Eord said “if you think you can, you can. If you think you cannot, you cannot. You are right either ways”. Vivek Rishi's success is a motivation for us. Thought moves logic. Emotions move feelings and motivation moves us into action. Yes, we are motivated by his achievement. He came to our class to share his experience of the two years we spent in +2 at St. Xavier's. “There were little eyes upon him and they were watching him carefully. Therre were little ears that quickly caught every word he said. There were little hands all eager to do what he did. And the students with small hearts filled with big dreams, who are dreaming of the day they willbe like him”. So, he was Vivek Rishi. Someone tobe remembered, Someone whois special, ‘Someone who was ready to be approached, Someone who ready to be moulded, Someone who was determined to achieve his goal, Someone who brought joy to his family and school. Friends, dream for higher things as he did. Never let failure lose your hope. You will achieve everything with hope and commitment. ARTS COURSE -VS- SCIENCE COURSE Arts and science are modern terms and the distinction between the two is a merely formal one. As a matter of fact, arts and science are the same, the contents of both being knowledge. As this field became wider & wider, the manifold subjects of knowledge were classed into two broad groups, called arts and science. The basis of the division seems to have been that subjects in which we have to carry on the processes of observation and experiment were classed as science and the rest as arts, This division is not accurate. Among the subjects generally taught in Indian universities, the Arts course composes of Eng. Literature, History, Economies, Philosophy etc. The science course comprises of Physics, Chemistry, Bio, Maths etc. The recognized difference between the two is that Science teaches us to know and Arts to do. According to this distinction, the grouping of subjects into Arts and science is just the reverse of what it should have been, for if any subject teaches us to do anything, it is the Science subjects. For example, Chemistry teaches us to make dyes for clothes,. Physics teaches us, to send wireless messages, to set up the electronic telegraph and so on. History, on the other hand gives us little of practical nature; it neither tells, us how to manufacture kings nor how to win battles, Economics, similarly deals with wealth but does not tell us how to grow wealthy. Thus, the distinction between Arts and Science is a mere arbitrary distinction. By far, both Arts & Science comprise of subjects of human knowledge, and stand on an equal footing. However, there's one marked difference between them. The former tries to teach difference between them. The former tries to teach something of, everything and the latter everything of something . Arts & Science are only conventional distinctions, at the bottom they are the same. Both lead the mind to the truth, both aim at acquisition of knowledge, both activate intellectual faculti heart from Nature up to Nature's God. | am proud to say that | am a Science student and every Arts student should be equally proud to saythat he/she isan Arts student. A great day for we Xaverians to prove ourselves 'PROUD' once again. We are ‘the champs. Allow us to give you a brief highlight of 3 days of real, atheletic and superb footballing experience. It was late at night of 27th August, when we gathered for the Pool Selection Lottery. And on. a ‘danger’ note, we were the part of Pool A, with 5 teams among the total 9, including Charhi, Balidih, SXS Bokaro, St. Robert's B and ourselves. We played our first match on 28th, against our Bokaro rivals, SXS Bokaro unfortunately faced a sad loss, with the visitors wining 1-nil. It was only then, that comments and criticism. showered upon us. That eve, we played against St. Louis Balidi and made a fighting comeback with cracking goals from Shivam Pasricha. Although we were hit by a goal, we won 2-1. The very next day, we played against another tough team and turned things upside down. We won, bya great margin of 4-0. Shivam contributed 2 hard goals, followed by Sumit and Sunny Kr. hittingone each. We then played against the former champions,Charhi in not more than 2 hours time,. Here too our star player Shivam showed up with his skills to lead us to victory 2-0. His 2nd goal was declared “Goal of the Tournament” by many. Topping up the Pool Stage became our advantage. We then entered the semis against R.C. Mission Danto, a team famous for its attacking play. We were charged up, especially Shivam. And he proved ityet again in this game, even though he faced a hard face injury, his back to back goals ‘opened up our waytothe finals. We won 2-0, The big event was the finals. A crowd of around 200 gathered by 8:00. A match full of pressure. Things went fine till the 1st half, but Nikhil's going off field due to an injury was a sudden setback. Even then our defenders did well. The score remained NIL-NIL by the end of extratime too. Now, the match took an interesting turn, and the penalty shoot was underway. Vikalp, our goalkeeper did his best and luckily our 2nd goalkeeper were the goal posts. Robins missed his first. shoot, but Sumit's cracked , Himanshu’s flash touch and Shivam’'s top corner placing ended up the score 3-2, making us the Champions again. Many of our players, faced injuries throughout. We believe they'll make a speedy recovery, before they move forward to Bhubaneshwar, to play the CBSE cluster Tournament. Well, most of you would have heard the name and some of you would have also seen the movie, While it's not an easy movieto understand, ithas a huge fan following across the world. Some people like it for its pioneering special effects and some for its fascinating fight sequences. However the philosophical teachings of the series created a divide amongst the audience. There were people who dismissed it for being too loaded with intellectual ideas, while others loved it for the same reason. There is a very life affirming message for everyone at the end of the movie whether you are a fan or not. The gist of the message is very simple and universal in nature. Even after all the things he has suffered. Neo is willing to ‘endure even more. This is because he chooses to because he believes. So instead of giving up in the face of dire conditions and succumbing to pressure, he chooses to stand up and fight, not only for himself but for others as well. You might think it's a superhero movie, that's why he does what he does. But it's more of an assertion of human spirit and will power. We also face a lot of problems in our lives. If things dont seem to be going our way, the ‘thought of quitting often crosses our minds. Quitting seems like the easiest and most convenient option. But remember life is a busy humdrum affair where a few moments of peace acquired should be gratefully acknowledged. We need to understand that frustrations and disappointments are part and parcel of life. Whenever we undertake a task, there are always chances of its failure. Sometimes these chances might be in our control and sometimes beyond it. But whatever the result, ‘one should not let the fear stop us from taking. the first step towards ourdreams. “Don't let your fear, of what could happen, makenothinghappen.” Remember perseverance tenacity and endurance are some of the qualities ingrained inalllof us, though at times, we need a spark to light this fire. So next time whenever there is a problem , choose to confront it to the best of your potential and you will surely discover the hidden strength in yourself. Md. Raziul Hasan N Class :XIIB HOW LIFE BEGAN Today we see millions of different animals and plants, living on the earth and in the sea. Butwe know very little about their early life. It might have started in some ancient sea millions of years ago. But we know that the early form of life must have been very simple and verysmall. The first living things were plants. The first plant probably looked like small pieces of green filly floating in the sea. The first animal must have been small one called creatures. The most important thing about them was that they could reproduce. As the conditions are always changing the living things which could move feed and breathe also underwent changes. The most important thing about them was that they could reproduce. The seas dried up and became plains, continents were flooded. Ice covered the land. Mountains, lakes and deserts were formed, forests grew. Animals and plants changed and developed. This process of gradual change is called Evolution. Yukta Bharti Class XII C TERRORISM A BIG PROBLEM As we all know that castism, communalism, regionalism, linguism and terrorism are all enemies of human society. Moreover terrorism has become a major problem for the whole world today. Terrorism means the use of violent methods for creating terror completely in the minds of the common people by using destructive and violent methods. Terrorism. includes bomb blasts which can kill a large number of people all around. Two atom bombs. destroyed fully the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki completely. This atom bomb blast has affected the lives of thousands of people in Japan. It signaled to the world the start ofa newage-the age of atomic energy. Terrorists perform an important role in spreading terrorism. They are not aliens but are from our own society. They have turned to terrorist from common men only because they had a feeling of discontentment and dissatisfaction in their minds and hearts. When they do not get proper justice, equality and proper facilities in society, the feelings of dissatisfaction arise. The terrorist take advantage of their discontentment and dissatisfaction. So they are invited to join terrorist groups. After joining the groups, they play a major role in destroying peace and unity amongthe people. Who will decide what terrorism is? No religion in the world teaches terrorism.Even then there are many terrorist groups who are known world wide. One of the famous terrorist was Osama Bin Laden who had been killed a few years ago. He is known to have played a major role in spreading terrorism in the last few decades. We remember the incident of the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai at Taj Hotel and other Hotels too. It is unforgettable. It Killed many people and leftmany of them injured. There is no denying the fact that science is working for the destruction of our civilization. Today the advancement in science and Technology is also responsible some how for the increase of terrorism. Atom bomb and Hydrogen bomb are the greatest danger. They can destroy mankind within minutes. Everything will be reduced to ashes. Buton the other hand science is also the greatest savior of manifitis putto proper use. Apart from these, respect for the law and order, the feelings and rights for others, the spirit of compromise, non violence, a sense of eae ce VEOSMOWS, equality of all human beings, the tolerance of differences and also a sense of what is anti social should always be in our minds. So that we can develop a sense of humanity in the presentsociety. Md. Ehsanul Haque, (Teacher) ofl EXCURSION FOR EDUCATION When I joined the school in June 2012, the current batch of Class IX was in class VI. | was the class teacher of VI B that year. | taught them English and Ethics for one semester. | also had ample opportunities to interact with their batch mates in other sections, especially during the sessions for Clubs and Activities. | found them very frank, well-disciplined, creative, intelligent and participatory in all the academic and co-curricular activities. 1 always enjoyed their respect and affection. Though | was shifted to higher classes to teach mathematics in the next semester, they remained in touch with me. When | started the preparation for the excursion in the month of December 2014 with the approval of the Principal, | decided to choose this particular batch of students who were then in Class VIII. First of all | conducted ion poll to find out how many of them would be interested to go for an excursion to Delhiand Agra. Around 115 students said ‘yes’ to this proposal. | then contacted Birsa Tours and Travels for further planning in this regard. We decided that the whole trip should be of seven days including the dates of departure andarrival. This meant that we had to leave on 27th March and be back on 2nd April 2015. We sent out the first circular to the parents of all the students of Class Vill with regard to the plans for anexcursion. Only the parents of 30 girls and 19 boys gave their consent to their children to participate in it. Sr. Ancila, Mrs. Amrita Aind, Mr. Amar Singh and myself agreed to accompany them for the trip. We instructed Birsa Tours and Travels to go ahead with the booking of train tickets and buses for our local sightseeing in Delhi and Agra, andthe arrangement for our accommodation in hotels. We contacted Mr. Anikesh Shetty, our former student, to help us with the booking of a bus for our tripto Barka Kana on 27th Marchto board the Ranchi-New Delhi GaribRath Express, and for our return trip on 2nd April when we would arrive at Barka Kana by New Delhi -Ranchi Rajdhani Express. We also registered ourselves online to visit Rashtrapati Bhavan on 29th March. After doing all the necessary preparations for the trip, we sent out the second circular to the parents. It contained the overall programme for seven days, and the instructions and guidelines to be followed by the students during the excursion. Wethen conducted an orientation programme for the students participating in the excursion from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon on 18thMarch.We instructed them on the preparations and the safety measures required for the trip. Fr. P. J. James, the Principal, Mr. Rajat Nag, the manager, Dr. Debabrat Mitra, the Vice Principal of the Plus Two section and Mr. Cyprian, the Vice Principal of the High School section also briefly shared their experiences with them in this regard. Finally we showed a video presentation of the virtual tour of the places to be visited and their historical importance. On 24th March a meeting of the parents and the teachers accompanying the students for the excursion was organized in the hall of the Primary Section. This meeting began at 2.15 p.m. with the short addresses by Fr. P. J. James, Mr. Rajat Nag and Mr. Cyprian. This was followed by my detailed inputs on the preparations, the planning and the contribution of parents for the smooth sailing of the excursion programme. The doubts and the anxieties of the parents were also clarified duringthe session. A final input session for the students participating in the excursion was organized at 2.00 p.m. in the Conference Room on 25th March. We briefed them about the interaction we had with the parents on the previous day, reminded them of the main points which were communicated to them earlier during the orientation programme, and clarified all the concerns raised by them. This was followed by separate instructions for girls by Mrs. Amrita ind and Sr. Ancila, while the boys moved out with Mr. Amar Singh and me to the next classroom for a brief input on self-discipline, sensitivity and self-responsibility. Finally all, that we looked forward to, became a reality. It was 27th March 2015 which was the day of departure for the excursion. There was a lot of excitement and a sense of satisfaction in every one of us, since we had thoroughly prepared ourselves for this day. It was a class day. The students and the teachers participating in the excursion were given passes to leave the school at 12.00 noon and report at 2.45 p.m. in front of the main building for the departure. At 2.45 p.m. the bus entered the school campus. We all loaded our luggage on the rooftop except for the day- packs which we kept inside the bus. All of us. took our seats in the bus except Aashika Jain who could not join us unfortunately for the trip due a fracture in her leg. With the best wishes of Fr. P. J. We are grateful to all those who helped us to make our dream for excursion come true, especially to Fr. P. J. James, the Principal of the school. We enjoyed every minute of the trip. We came back with a lot of enriching and enlightening experiences for our life ahead. Unfortunately we couldn't visit Rashtrapati Bhavan since the date of our visit to it was rescheduled by the officials to Sth April at the last moment due to a sudden VIP programme over there. However as an alternative arrangement we could spend our time in ‘Akshar Dham Temple which is the largest Hindu Templein the world, | congratulate every student who participated in the excursion for putting all their experiences in black and white, and sharing them with the rest of the students of the High School Section in the School Hall on 28th April in the form of a group presentation which consisted of speeches, videos, a Power Point presentation and songs. | feel privileged to edit and present to you some of the articles written by them for this issue of Xavierian Xpressions. We will remember this experience for the rest of our lives. We hope more such trips are organized bythe school. Anshika Jain Class IXB THE PLACE THAT TOUCHED ME MOST... I was lucky to have the opportunity of travailing with my friends and teachers during our educational trip to Agra and Delhi. Visiting both the places was a marvelous experience for me. We gained lots of knowledge when we visited the historical places like Jantar Mantar, Red Fort, Raj Ghat, Sikandra, Humayun Tomb, Qutub Minar, Akshar Dham Temple, Lotus Temple, etc, But the place that touched me most was “GANDHI SMRITI”. I love that place. lleant about the different phases of Gandhi's life there. | felt touched by the main mottos of Gandhi which are nothing but ahimsa, peace, self-reliance and unity. I saw his room where he stayed whenever he came to Delhi. | had a glance of the books that were written by him. I visited the museum where some of the materials that he used were exhibited. There was also a beautiful Charkha that Gandhi used tomake Khadi clothes for himself. We had a lady guide who shared with us very beautifully about Gandhi's life, She told us about how Gandhi lived his life in simplicity and peace, what the main motto of his life was, what he did for the country and why he is known as the Father of the Nation. She explained to us everything about Gandhi with the help of modern technologies like the LCD projector. We also watched a video on the last, phase of Gandhi's life. The last word that he said in the last breath of his life was "Hil Ram!”. | believe that visiting Gandhi Smriti was one of the best inspiring experiences for me during the excursion. Itwas the place where | gained a lot of knowledge about “the Father of the Nation”, Anshika Jain Class IXB \ GANDHI SMRITI: A SYMBOL OF UNITY IN DIVERSITY We visited ' Gandhi Smriti' or ' Birla House! on the third day of our excursion. It is the memorial of the father of our nation 'Mahatma Gandhi. We saw a huge collection of Gandhi's, photos on his struggles for independence, his last days, his martyrdom and his cremation. There was a stupendous statue of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi. There were many musical instruments which played eae ce VEOSMOWS, the song 'Raghupati raghav rajaram...' which was one of the favourite bhajans of Gandhiji. There was also the ‘Charkha’, which Gandhiji used to make Khadiclothes for himself. Everything in Gandhi Smriti was interesting and inspiring, but the thing that touched me most was the Gandhian spirit of “Unity in Diversity”. There was a pole in which there were ‘many colourful lights, and when all of us held the hands of one another and formed a circle around it, the lights on the pole started glowing brightly. This was the most wonderful and inspiring experience of unity in diversity in my life. Aastha Jain Class IXA A SYMBOL OF EXTERNAL LOVE Itwas on the fifth day of our excursion that we came to Agra which is one of the historical capitals of India. Our first destination there was Akbar's tomb in Sikandra followed by Agra Fortand Taj Mahal. On the way toTaj Mahal, we stopped at an outlet of Uttar Pradesh Tourism and amazed at the handicrafts displayed there, especially the replicas of Taj Mahal. They looked grand and impressive. This increased our eagerness to see the real Taj. After travailing by bus for about 3 kms, we finally reached the West Gate, from where we had to cover the rest of the distance on foot to reach Taj Mahal. We, boys and girls, lined up separately for security clearance, and then proceeded towards the huge main entrance of Taj Mahal. We saw from far a white building made of white marbles as we entered the main entrance. We walked on paths made of marble slabs. There were cisterns and fountains in between the paths. There were huge lawns and trees on both the sides. We took lots of photos of Taj as we moved further close to the mausoleum. It is really a great expression of love and a magnificent Mugal structure by Shahjehan in the memory of his wife Mumtaj. We were actually puzzled to see architectural greatness and glory. The sight of Taj has made a deep impression on me. Ican't forgetit. Basundhara Class IXC AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE ‘An excursion! A trip with my friends! It was. like a dream come true.
