Period 6
Disabled are often made fun of, looked at differently, and treated unfairly. I know this first hand.
My cousin cannot speak, walk and can hardly move on her own. In public people will stare, point
and often laugh. I see her as a beautiful creation, however, its sad to think that peoples
thoughts are different. Its Heart breaking that people would ever dare to make fun of her
distorted face and body, because they haven't been through what she has, they havent had to
adapt like she has, they didnt have to work their butt off so that they could even scoot on the
floor in order to have so movement.
This is not right. As stated by Dr. Seuss, A person's a person, no matter how small. I
think this quotes goes with people who cant function as well as others. An example of this is
Helen keller she was born normal but within 19 months she contracted some illness that was
unknown, it left her blind and deaf. She had a teacher named Anne Sullivan. She was born April
14, 1866. At age 5 she was contracted with trachoma which left her blind. After her parents and
brother died and after 4 year in the poor house she was sent to Perkins Institute for Blind in
Boston. After 6 years at the institute she was able to participate in a successful eye surgery. She
slowly taught Helen keller how to read and and write. She was the change in Helen Kellers life
and will always be a role model in my life.
I want to be the change in our world, to spread awareness that people that are disable
ant to be called retarded they are human beings just like us and they deserve to be treated as
so. They shouldnt be pointed at or treated differently. I want to be able to stop the cruel
treatment that is being pressed upon disabled people and help them do what they'd like to
accomplish just like what Anne Sullivan did.
