Lesson: English Language Arts


Grade: 3rd
Standards: CCSS RL.3.1 ask and answer questions to demonstrate
understanding, referring to the text; RL.3.3 describe characters and
explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events; RL.3.4
determine the meaning of words and phrases, distinguishing literal and
non-literal language; RF.3.3a identify and know the meaning of
common prefixes and derivational suffixes; RF.3.4a read on-level text
with purpose and understanding; L.3.4b determine the meaning of a
new word with a known affix and a known word; L.3.4a use sentencelevel context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
Anticipatory
Simon Says Vocabulary Builder
Set
The Challenge: Students play Simon Says to build
familiarity with action verbs.
The rules: have students stand up. Call out various
prompts, such as, Simon says run in place. Have students
follow your command, but only when Simon says. Be sure
they understand that anyone who follows the command
when you dont says Simon says is out and must sit down.
The Reward: Anyone standing after five minutes is a
winner.

Instructional
Input

Review: Subject-verb Agreement


Write the pronouns he, she, it on the board. Write the verbs grow, grows,
work, works, jog, jogs.
Explain, when the subject is he, she, it or a noun that these pronouns
replace, add s to the action verb
Prefix reWrite re on the board. Explain that prefixes are word parts that change the
meaning of a root word. Prefixes are attached to the beginning of a root
word. Teach that re- means do again.

Write the following words on the board, without the
prefixes.

Point to read. Use a word in a sentence (e.g., I only read
books.). Then write re-in front of read and ask, What does
the word mean if we add re-to the front? I reread books
that I dont understand.
Students should be able to answer that reread means to
read again. Point to the prefix as we read, then read the
whole word. Repeat the process with all the words.
Students should be able to read the prefixes and words,
and know the meaning.

Have students complete activity book pages 85 and 173.
