Today we will be learning how to dance the Pata Pata. Pata Pata is a four-wall dance from South Africa. Today we will be working in groups. You will be responsible for
learning one part of the dance and teaching it to the rest of the people in your groups. Your cooperation will be very important for your group to successfully learn this dance.

What I will do to encourage students PA engagement beyond my class:


I will encourage students to teach the dances to their friends and family.

CONTENT:
Jigsaw: Students will be split up into assigned groups. There will be six groups. Each group will be
divided into three subgroups consisting of two students. Some subgroups may have three students.
Each subgroup is responsible for learning one of the three parts of the Pata Pata dance. There will
be posters on the walls with the steps and images to each part. The students will work with their
subgroups to learn and become experts of their designated part. Demonstrate the dance one time
before sending them off in order for them to get an idea of what it should look like.

Students will now work with their entire group. They will take turns teaching everyone else the
parts of the dance in order from Part 1 to Part 3. Groups will be allowed to spread out in the gym.

TRANSITION: Back to dance lines


CONTENT:
Teach dance steps to whole class. Use mirror strategy (facing class). Start with part one. Add on part
two, and then part three. After each part, continue saying cues and observe the class line-by-line
providing feedback.
Part 1: Start with feet together. Step right foot to the right side, then step back together to starting
position. Then step left foot to the left side, and bring back to starting position.
Part 2: Balance on heels and turn toes out. Then balance on toes and turn heels out. Then stay on
toes and turn heels back in. Finally, balance on heels and bring toes in.
Part 3: Raise right knee in front of body. Touch right foot back in starting position. Raise right knee
once again. Step right foot back down to staring position with weight on both feet. Kick left foot
forward turning quarter turn to the right. Step back on left foot. Step back on right foot. Step back
on left foot (back to starting position facing a new direction.
