Narrative:SemesterProject
EveryonearoundtheNationfightsforequality.Whetheritisforforrace,sexuality,or
genderroles.However,asthenumberofminoritiesenteringtheUnitedStatesincreasesitseems
asthoughequalityisbeingharderforallpeopletoaccept.ImyselfamaMexicanAmerican,my
fatherbeingborninMexicothenbecominganaturalizedcitizen,andastimemovesonithas
becomevastlymoreevidentinmylifethatthehispaniccultureisstrugglingtosurvivein
Americansociety.WhichiswhyIposetohostaHispanicculturalfestivalinordertopromote
theconservationofculturewithinthecommunityofElMirage.Thefoundationofthelandofthe
freeandthehomeofthebraveisonlyadreamthatcannottrulybefullyachievedbythe
hispaniccommunity.WiththebackgroundthatIhavepersonallybeingraisedasahispanicI
believeitisimportanttorestorethemindsetofthehispanicculture.
Growingup,Iwasraisedfromtwoverydistinctculturalbackgrounds.Myfather,a
naturalizedcitizen,movedfromOaxaca,MexicototheUnitedStatestomakeanewimproved
lifeforhimself.However,mymotherisabornandraisedAmericancitizen.GrowingupIwas
onlyallowedtospeakspanishinmyhome,Itraveledatayoungageeverysummertovisitmy
father'ssideofthefamilyinMexico.Although,itwasntuntilIwasolderandinschoolI
realizedthatkidscomingfromasimilarbackgroundwerenotasluckyasIwas.Theirparents
wouldteachthemtheAmericanway,aformoflifethatexcludedtheirheritagewhichmakes

upahugeportionofwhotheyare,allbecausetheywereafraidoftheprejudicecreatedby
society.
Peoplewererudeandinconsiderateofculturesandbackgroundsthatweredifferentas
comparedtotheirown.Insecondgrade,weweregivenaquestion,wewereaskedifwewere
politicalleaderswhatwouldwedotomakeadifferenceontheUnitedStates?Ithenremember
oneofmyclassmatesinparticularproclaimedtheywouldliketobuildabiggerwalltokeepall
theMexicansout,becausetheywereallbad.ThiswasthefirsttimeIcanrecallthatIhadheard
firsthandAmericanchildrenspeakbadlyaboutacultureandcommunityofpeopletheydidnot
evenunderstand.IoftenoverhearmanypeoplesaythatMexicoissodangerousandtheykeep
sendingdrugsandviolencetoournation.ItcametoapointwhereIbegantoquestionwhoI
wasandIbecameashamedofmyfatherandwherehecamefrom.ThethoughtofwhoIwasand
weremyheritageliesasbeingbadaffectedmylife.
IwasdevastatedanditwasnotuntilIbegantakingspanishclassesinschoolthatpeople
thoughtitwascoolthatIwasnativelyfluentinspanishanditwassoeasyformetogetanA
inclassthatallowedmetorealizedIshouldembracewhoIamandwheremybackgroundlies.
AlthoughpeoplethoughtItmaybecooltospeakspanishtheyneverunderstoodthebeauty
Mexicohadtooffer.AsIgotolderandembracedwhoIwasInoticedthatmycousinswere
growingupnotwantingtospeakspanish.Theylivedwithhispanicparentsonlyknowing
spanish,andtheyrefusedtospeakitinfearofbeingmadefunof.Whenseeingthatitwasnot
justmeplaguedbyanimosityofothers,IknewIwantedtomakeadifferenceintheperception
oftheHispanicculture.ThatthevoiceofallMexicanAmericansandHispanicsaroundthe
nationneededtobeheard.

Peoplearoundthenationareunawareandnotfullyknowledgeableaboutvarious
cultures.AstheUnitedStatesisderivedfromimmigrantsIfeelitisimportanttoincorporateall
nationalitiestoinitiatethemeltingpotandanopenmindtoaccepttheworldaroundus.Parents,
teens,andchildrenareallaffectedbythebiasedopinionsofothersandithardforthemto
believethattheUnitedStatesissogreatwhentheyarestrugglingtolivenormallivesas
Americanswhilestillgraspingontotheirroots.
AsHispanicpeoplearoundtheworldareallstrugglingtoembracetheirheritageandtheir
culturalwayoflife.Theyaredistancingthemselvesfromtheiridentityandwhatmakesseparates
themfromothers.Beingabletoembracemyfathersculturehascreatedmyperceptionofpeople
andtheworldsomuchstronge,alongwithmakingme,inturn,abetterperson.Iamnowproudto
saythatIamOaxaquea,andthatitismydutytohelppeopleacknowledgeandhonortheir
ancestors.ThisHispanicculturalfestivalwillallowmetospreadtheHispanicculture.Itwill
inspirechildrentoappreciatetheirheritageandcreateastrongercommunitywithinElMirage
andtheHispanicfamilies.
