A strong contested race for the Athletic Representative position was held this spring. The focus was to capitalize on SGSU's high consumption of social media. Social media releases such as the "Candidate Corner" videos showed promise in the coming years.

What did they consist of? What worked/didnt work? Read the spectator Though it was a long and arduous process for the candidates, the Spring 2016 Elections have come and gone in a flash! This spring we filled positions for the four executive positions - Student Body President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of University Affairs and seven representative positons At-Large, Athletic, Junior, Multicultural, Non-Traditional, Senior, and Sophomore. Surprisingly, we held a strongly contested Athletic Representative race with three candidates vying for the position. In the past executive positions - such as the 2015 Vice President of University Affairs race that also had three candidates - held the honor of being the most contested but it appears that the current shift favors the representatives this year. Besides an unexpected skew in the contested races, an additional shift was the decrease of campus events and the increase in social media to power the elections. While the candidates attended the Learn Smore About the Candidates meet and greet, the focus was to capitalize on our high consumption of social media. Our Elections Commission released a series of Candidate Corner videos that highlighted how the candidates stand on issues such as divestment, the developments in the housing policy, and Seattles State of Emergency on Homelessness. These videos were obviously not viral but they allowed the candidates to increase their accessibility toward voters and allowed SGSU to increase our influence over social media. Social media releases such as the Candidate Corner videos showed promise in the coming years. Given additional preparations and structured planning, SGSUs use of social media during subsequent elections has the potential to increase the voting bodys awareness of candidates and the pressing issues that we experience on our campus. On behalf of SGSU and the elections commission, we now welcome 11 new members into Student Government for the 2016 2017 school year! But who are they? Check the Spectator on Wednesday for the release of the candidates and full interviews illustrating their background and what your new elections plan to do with the coming school year.
