Abstract:
Intheexperimentweuseddifferentdensitymaterialsandcreatedmechanicalwavesandmeasuredthe
differenceinamplitudeoveradistancetofindtheenergyloss.Ourhypothesissaidthattheresultswould
showthatthedensertheliquidthemoreresistancethereisonamechanicalwave,butourresultsshowed
ustheopposite.Themoredenseliquidputuplessresistanceasyoucanseeinthedatatableabove.
Ourtheoryisthatthethedensermaterialsmadethemechanicalwavesgofasterandtakelesstimetogo
throughtheareathereforelosinglessenergy.
Introduction:
Inthisproject,wearefocusingontheamplitude,orheight,ofwavesandhowdifferentdensities,how
thickaliquidis,affecttheamplitudeofthewavesoveradistance.Asawavedegradesovertimeitloses
energy,andawavewillbendifthedepthofamediumischanged,goingfromdeeptoshallow.Inthis
experimentweusedalong,cleartupperwarebuckettoholdourwater,rulerstomeasurethedistanceof
thetroughsandcrests,slowmotioncamerasforreplay,andawoodenblocktocreatetheinitialwaves.
Wewantedtofocusonthistopicforourprojectbecausewewereinterestedindiscoveringtheamazing
propertiesofliquidwavesandthewhattypeofmaterialscanconductawave.
QuestionandHypothesis:
Howdoesthedensityofthemediumaffectenergylossonmechanicalwaves?
Ifthemediumismoredense,thanthefasterawavewilldecaybecausemoreparticlesarebumpinginto
eachotherandcreatingmoreenergylossduetofriction.

Forourexperimentweusedrulerstomeasurethedepthandfrequencyofthewavesastheytraveled
throughthemedium.Weusedtheslowmotionoptiononourcameraphonesinordertovideoandreview
thedatathatwerecorded.Onthebottomofourtankwehadalongerrulerlaidouttoseehowthedistance
ofthewaveschangeovertimeandhowdifferentmaterialsslowthecrestsofthewaves.

Discussion:
Forourlabexperimentswedecidedtoevaluatethedensityofamediumandquestionwhetheritwould
changehowawavemoved.Ourideaforthisprojectcamefromdoingpreviousexperimentsinvolvinga
wavetankshowinghowwavesmoveandbenddependingonthedepthofthewater.Afterwefoundthe
subjectforourexperiment,wediscussedatwhatdensityofthemediumthatwewouldnoticeadifference
inthemovementsofthewavesincludingthedistanceofthecrestsandamplitudeofthewaves.Whenwe
didourfirstexperimentwestartedwithwateratdifferentdepthsinordertogetabetterwave,andwe
eventuallyfoundthatadepthof5cmhadthebestresults.Whilewedidourexperimentsweusediphones
tovideotheresults.Aswemovedonfrompurewatertooursecondexperiment,weaddedsalttothe
watertoseeifaslightincreaseindensitywouldchangethewavesdrastically.
Wemovedtooil,whichseemedtomovejustaquicklyasthepurewaterbutthecrestsofthewaveswere
closer.Intheendwenoticedthataslightincreaseindensitydidchangethewaves,butwastheopposite
ofwhathypothesispredicted,butwassoslightitwasntnoticeablewithoutslowingthevideodown.The
datashowedthatthedenserthematerialthethelessenergythewavewaslosingoveradistance.Our
theoryisthatthethedensermaterialsmadethemechanicalwavesgofasterandtakelesstimetogo
throughtheareathereforelosinglessenergy.
Conclusion:
Theresultsfromourexperimentsshowedthatwhenamechanicalwavemovesthroughadensermedium
itlostlessenergyoverlongerdistances.Ourresultsalsoshowedthatthedenserthemediumwas,the
shorterthecrestsofthewaveswere,andgaveusagreaterunderstandingofwaves.
