Hi Families,

I am Raylene McCreath, (Ms. McCreath), and I am in my fifth year of the Bachelor of Education
program at Vancouver Island University. I have the pleasure of working alongside with Ms. McCallum
and her class for my final practicum. Starting in September, myself and thirty other student teachers were
placed at Nanoose Bay Elementary School for our collaboration practicum. I am First Nations and
currently live in Nanaimo, but I was born and raised in Tofino. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the school, as
well as the warm welcome from the staff and students so much that I chose to remain at the school to
complete my individual final practicum.
Units we will be covering:

Math Fractions & decimals

Social Studies First Nations Pre-contact
Language Arts Poetry
Science Simple Machines

As a final project, your child will be creating a First Nations Diorama (West-coast related). This
will be a final research project along with an art project. Your child will need to include examples of these
topics within their diorama: Geography, Society, Clothing, Housing, and Food.
Some supplies your child may start collecting are:

Shoe boxes
Toy animals (bears, moose, deer, etc.)
Doll representation for First Nations people
Cut outs/pictures representing where First Nations lived (environment representation)
Moss/grass material (animal habitat representation)
Cut outs/drawings of Food representations (i.e. berries, salmon, plants, etc.)

Our classs MAIN focus has been about the West Coast First Nations people: Vancouver Island and
Lower mainland of BC (i.e. Northwest Coastal People).
If you are having trouble finding any information, or have any questions please let me know so that I can
help you out. Feel free to contact me at rmccreath9@gmail.com and we can set up a meeting or talk via
email.
Thank you for your support and I look forward to completing my final practicum working with your
child.
Sincerely,

Raylene McCreath
